Kissi participants crossed over the Makona River on ferries from Guinea to attend the three-day event in Koindu, Sierra Leone. The opening of a central market in Koindu, sponsored by USAID, is giving support to trade in an area that before the war was a trade hub for many countries in the subregion. The occasion was the first opportunity for the Kissi people of the three countries to come together and it was regarded by all present as the first step to building people-to-people regional cooperation and solidarity in the sub-region. The official launching of the market also provided the Kissis an opportunity to celeberate their common heritage and culture after several years of mutual suspicion and fear fed by events of the war in the sub region. The "Kissi devil" mask was brought out as part of the festivities during the Koindu celebration.

Disabled in Sierra Leone prove disability is not inability
FAO helps war-disabled and others improve their livelihoods and play their part in community development
3 December 2004, Rome
So far, 60 disabled persons have been trained in blacksmithing, food processing and other income-generating skills. This opens the way for them to make a good living and demonstrates that the disabled can make important contributions to their families and communities a message being stressed by FAO on the International Day of Disabled Persons.
Proclaimed by the UN General Assembly in 1992, the International Day of Disabled Persons is observed every year on 3 December to promote awareness and understanding of disability issues. It also seeks to increase awareness of the gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
A role to play
With initial start-up capital and inputs provided by FAO, four training and production centres have been established in Bo, Bonthe, Tonkolili and Port Loko Districts. The centres are now fully owned and managed by the disabled with support from community elders. Advisory services are provided by government extension agents from the Ministries of Agriculture, Social Welfare, Health and Education.

Sierra Leone Plants and Animal Back to Top A savanna vegetation, comprising grasses and bushes, dominates northern Sierra Leone. Forests are densest in the southeast and contain varieties of palm and, to a lesser extent, mahogany and teak. Among the numerous small animals are bush pigs, chimpanzees, monkeys, and porcupines. Crocodiles and hippopotamuses are often found in the rivers. Sierra Leone Communications Back to Top

Sierra Leone Culture Back to Top The most outstanding feature of the nation's cultural life is its dancing. The Sierra Leone Dance Troupe is internationally known. The different communities of the nation have their own styles of costume and dance. In addition, certain closed societies, such as the Wunde, the Sande (Bundu), and the Gola, have characteristic ceremonial dances. A wide range of agility, gracefulness, and rhythm is displayed; in addition, there are elements of symbolism in most of the dances. Drums, wooden xylophones ,and various stringed instruments offer the musical background. The carving of various wooden masks in human and animal figures for the dances is particularly advanced in the southern region. The Sande mask worn on the head of the chief dancer during the ceremony attending the reappearance of the female initiates from their time of seclusion is perhaps the most well-known carved figure in Sierra Leonean art. It is a symmetrically stylized black head of an African woman with an elaborate plaited pyramidal coiffure adorned with various figures and with a facial expression of grave dignity and beauty.

Human Rights Watch Press Release, August 14, 2000 HRW Sierra Leone web page
Human Rights Watch believes that the effectiveness of this justice effort will to a significant degree be determined by the framework for the court to be proposed by the team of experts. Human Rights Watch believes that justice and the ending of the culture of impunity in Sierra Leone are of paramount importance for the peace process and the country's overall future. A justice effort, to be meaningful and to produce lasting results, must be credible and legitimate. The criminal responsibility of all abusive parties must be assessed, including those of the RUF's former allies, the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council (AFRC) and dissident factions of the Sierra Leone Army (SLA).

The United Nations Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict recently released the following numbers. In the past decade:
  • 2 million children have been killed in conflict situations
  • Over 1 million have been made orphans
  • Over 6 million have been seriously injured or permanently disabled
  • Over 10 million have been left with grave psychological trauma
At the present moment:
  • There are over 20 million children displaced by war
  • Some 300,000 young persons under the age of 18 are currently being exploited as child soldiers around the world
  • Approximately 800 children are killed or maimed by landmines every month
Last year innovative theater director Ping Chong joined with the Center for Multicultural Human Services to create "Children Of War," a new multi-disciplinary theater work based on the personal testimonies of a diverse group of young people who have experienced war and domestic trauma. The piece evolved through discussions between Ping Chong and the participants. "Children Of War" is part of Ping Chong's "Undesirable Elements" series which explores history, culture, and ethnicity's effects on individuals and their communities.

    History
The written history of Sierra Leone begins in 1462, when Portuguese explorers first landed and named the country "Lion Mountains". Europeans used the land as a source for slaves, but in 1787 Freetown was established as a city for former slaves living in London. In 1808, Sierra Leone became a British Crown Colony, which it remained until halfway through the 20th century, when the process of de-colonisation was commenced. This culminated in independence on April 27, 1961. Sir Milton Margai (1895-1964) was its first prime minister. The republic—briefly a one-party state in the early 1980s—became involved in a civil war in 1991, with the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) of Foday Sankoh rebelling against the government. This resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and the displacement of more than 2 million people (well over one-third of the population) many of whom are now refugees in neighboring countries. A military coup on May 25, 1997 replaced then President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah with Major Johnny Paul Koromah. Kabbah was reinstated in March 1998, after the junta was ousted by the Nigerian-led ECOMOG forces.

The need to draw inferences almost certainly stems from the author's assumption about readers' knowledge of Sierra Leonean history. In this sense, readers must understand that the focus of the book is on the Mende ethnic group. Knowledgeable readers will be aware of the differences between rural and urban Sierra Leone and the historical development of this difference. Readers' understanding would benefit significantly through the inclusion of maps or a chapter that provides a historical background. However, a careful reading of the work will allow the reader to grasp the underlying theoretical explanation of which violence is one corollary. The theory is that violence in this part of Sierra Leone stems from two sources. Source one is path-dependence or an accumulation of historical violence that leads to the development of what might be termed “a low trust” or “cautious” society. It is very important to clarify an assumption that often causes confusion here. The necessity of interdependence is assumed to preclude the utility of violent behavior. The means of survival within the context of violence is ambiguity. Thus, in sharp contrast to Western ideals, ambiguity is considered the proper, if necessary, mode of discourse. “Great value is attached to verbal artistry that couches meanings in puns, riddles, and cautionary tales and to unusual powers of understanding that enable people to both produce and unmask highly ambiguous meanings" (p. 7). One point that is well illustrated by the author is the depth of ambiguity in the Mende culture. This depth allows ambiguity to take a variety of functions of which the limitation of political power through uncertainty figures prominently. The utility of ambiguity is important in understanding the potentiality of democratization in such societies. In the absence of widespread norms of trust and transparency, ambiguity becomes a necessary means of discourse.
