Introduction
Sierra Leone is a small country in western Africa with a population of more than 4 million people. Although it has considerable mineral resources, especially diamonds, it is a poor nation. Sierra Leone has been in the news a great deal lately because it has serious problems with a violent civil war that has hurt thousands of people and with refugees from Liberia. Sierra Leone is trying to solve these problems, but this will be difficult. Find out more about Sierra Leone below.
Geography
Sierra Leone lies on the Western coast of Africa between Guinea and Liberia. The name Sierra Leone means "Lion Mountains". Guinea is North of it, and Liberia is East. Sierra Leone borders the Atlantic Ocean, and has an area roughly 72,000 square kilometers a little smaller than South Carolina or a little larger than West Virginia. It is not the smallest country in Africa, but it is small compared to the size of Africa.
Sierra Leone has many sources of water from rivers. Throughout Sierra Leone, ther are many small mountains. These mountains have rivers flowing down them, that eventully flow to the sea. These rivers provide drinking water and useful transportation routes to the sea and other towns within Sierra Leone. People either travel short distances by foot, bike, or car (if owned). Long distances are usually traveled by boat or plane. Most people in this country don't have enough money to own a car or to buy an airplane ticket, so the majority use boats for long trips.
Sierra Leone has many natural resources that are worth a lot of money and are wanted throughout the world. These resources are minerals, especially diamonds, agricultural products, and fish. Along the coast of Sierra Leone, fisherman go out onto the sea every day to catch many fish. Towards the Eastern part, farmers grow their crops. All throughout Sierra Leone, titanium ore, bauxite, iron ore, gold chromite, and diamonds can be found. The diamonds are found in gravel deposits and swamps. Although diamonds are abundant, Sierra Leone is extremely poor.

http://www.inasp.info/pubs/bookchain/profiles/SierraLeone.html
The Book Chain in Sierra Leone By Oliver Harding Harris realistically observed that a vibrant book development programme in Sierra Leone must encourage 'a nation's writers, artists and poets, have regard for indigenous languages and culture Š a library system to make all such books available, an efficient pattern of distribution and retail Š local publishing and printing industries'. It is true that 'any effort for the development of human resources cannot succeed in the absence of a programme of producing appropriate books and other learning materials for different segments of the population'. Theoretically, there are regulations that, if implemented or enforced, could lead to a vibrant book industry in Sierra Leone. The new education programme for Sierra Leone echoes the provision of an efficient national library service to establish, equip, manage and maintain libraries in Sierra Leone. The National Library Service is charged with the responsibility of acquiring books 'produced in and outside Sierra Leone and the collection of materials both current and retrospective relating to Sierra Leone'. This Act also makes provision for 'infringement by importation, sale and other dealings and provides remedies for such infringements'.

Sierra Leone
From modest beginnings in April 1997, the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL) has emerged as the strongest expression of civil society in that war-torn West African nation. Convened by Religions for Peace to assist in establishing traditions of democracy and a culture of human rights, the IRCSL has become Sierra Leone's most effective facilitator, mediator and advocate for peace. As Sierra Leone has begun to rebuild its society, the IRCSL has begun the crucial work of encouraging reconciliation and creating a culture of peace. Sierra Leone endured more than a decade of what its president calls "the most brutal warfare in the modern world." Bands of rebels, enjoying little public support but armed with advanced weaponry obtained through illegal channels, have terrorized the populace through kidnapping, maiming, and murder in an effort to depose a democratically elected government and destabilize the region. Among the most heinous of their crimes is the abduction of thousands of children for use as soldiers-forcing boys younger than 10 to kill and to participate in the other horrors of modern warfare. The IRCSL is Sierra Leone's only multi-religious organization that includes representatives from all the country's major religious groups. Sierra Leone has a long history of deeply rooted religious traditions whose institutions form the most highly developed social infrastructure in the county. In late 1996, Religions for Peace recognized that collaborative religious efforts could be a powerful force for social reconstruction in Sierra Leone and began to work with religious leaders to forge a coalition to tap these resources. Support for the initiative was received from many quarters, including President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, local Non-Government Organizations, and representatives of the international diplomatic community.

For the people of the region, who are still coming to terms with the bitter memories of the conflict, life is returning to normal. For Saidu Conteh, nine years old, that means he will actually be able to attend school. Overcoming a gun culture Initially, however, many people in Ribbi refused to cooperate with the initiative, including ex-combatants on both sides of the fighting, from the RUF and from the Civil Defense Forces. The Chiefdom Speaker finally had the idea to ask former commanders for help in convincing their former subordinates to participate. After explaining the initiative and its benefits, several former commanders decided to join and succeeded in persuading a significant number of former soldiers to turn in their weapons. Since the chiefdom has been declared arms-free, investors are more interested in the area. One company is currently restarting production in the old palm oil plantation and community members think that the improved safety of their chiefdom will bring more investments, both national and international.

The objectives of this project are to determine which technique of oyster culture is most suitable for local conditions, to evaluate current processing and marketing of oysters suggesting practical improved techniques, to identify areas safe for the culture and harvest of mangrove oysters, and to provide the basis for decisions on the level of biological inspection control necessary for developing an industry.

Introduction
Mrs. Queen Ellis of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina making a Gullah basket (1976). The Gullah are a distinctive group of Black Americans from South Carolina and Georgia in the southeastern United States. They live in small farming and fishing communities along the Atlantic coastal plain and on the chain of Sea Islands which runs parallel to the coast. Because of their geographical isolation and strong community life, the Gullah have been able to preserve more of their African cultural heritage than any other group of Black Americans. They speak a creole language similar to Sierra Leone Krio, use African names, tell African folktales, make African-style handicrafts such as baskets and carved walking sticks, and enjoy a rich cuisine based primarily on rice. The Gullah people are directly descended from the slaves who labored on the rice plantations, and their language reflects significant influences from Sierra Leone and the surrounding area. The Gullahs' English-based creole language is strikingly similar to Sierra Leone Krio and contains such identical expressions as bigyai (greedy)

The Revolutionary United Front (RUF) launched a guerrilla campaign from neighboring Liberia in 1991 to end 23 years of increasingly corrupt one-party rule by President Joseph Momoh. Power fell into the lap of Captain Valentine Strasser in 1992, when he and other junior officers attempted to confront Momoh about poor pay and working conditions at the front. Momoh fled the country. The Strasser regime hired South African soldiers from the security company Executive Outcomes to help win back key diamond-rich areas. In January 1996, Brigadier Julius Maada-Bio quietly deposed Strasser. Elections proceeded despite military and rebel intimidation, and voters elected Kabbah as president. The following year, Major Johnny Paul Koroma toppled the Kabbah government, established the Armed Forces Revolutionary Council, and invited the RUF to join the junta. Nigerian-led West African troops, backed by logistical and intelligence support from the British company Sandline, restored President Kabbah to power in February 1998, but the country continued to be racked by war. A peace agreement in July 1999 led to the beginning of disarmament, but the disarmament process stopped in May 2000 with a return to hostilities and the taking of about 500 peacekeepers as hostages. British troops flew in to help, and disarmament resumed in May 2001.

It is Dalby's thesis that a Black Portuguese developed as a lingua franca in West Africa in the 15th century and spread around the globe as a maritime creole. That it was an African construct for communication not only between black and white but a trade language between indigeneous coastal people who spoke different languages. It set a pattern. Even today for every European or American able to speak an African language, millions of Africans are able to speak a European language. [Also even today a great number of people in West Africa are multi-lingual] Black Portuguese had a full century of development before the Dutch displaced the Portuguese in the slave trade. A similar phenomenon - Black Dutch = Afrikaans characterised speech communities in the Dutch Islands in the Caribbean and Surinam, it is the mother tongue of Cape Coloureds, not only of Afrikaners of SA. [ consult Dalby for linguistic arguments re phonological, grammatical and semantic structure reminiscent of many African languages though vocabulary derived from European language]. So too Black French which developed by the middle of the 17th C around the French bases and colonies on both sides of the Atlantic. Goodman points out the

Sierra Leone was founded in the 1780s as a place for freed British ex-slaves to resettle in Africa. It became a British Crown Colony in 1806, the year before the slave trade was outlawed. In January of 1792, 1,200 former American slaves who had ought on the British side in the Revolutionary War, then emigrated to Nova Scotia, where they were unable to obtain land of their own, arrived in Sierra Leone and settled in Freetown. The expenses of their voyage were paid for by the British government. They had become Christians while in North America and carried their "boisterous Christianity" with them back to Africa, defining their new culture in Christian terms, and spreading its message to all in Sierra Leone who would listen. The Settlers, as the Nova Scotia Sierra Leonians came to be called, now fortified by a large influx of "Recaptives" Ð persons taken from captured slave ships and resettled in Sierra Leone grew into a large and vibrant Christian community. In the 1860s the Sierra Leonean community requested the aid of full-time missionary clergy from England. The Church in Sierra Leone was already lively and vibrant under the leadership of the wealthy and powerful Settler Christians. The missionaries sent out to minister to them were not infrequently their inferiors in knowledge of the Bible and Christian doctrine.
