Pendleton Round-Up Native Rodeo - An Introduction Native American Cowboy Exhibition at the National Museum of the American Indian in Lower Manhattan 2004 The artistry, history and poetry of Native American cowboy life was presented in “Legends of Our Times: Native Ranching and Rodeo Life on the Plains and the Plateau at the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian in Lower Manhattan, on Saturday, May 17, 2004. More than 700 objects, such as saddles, photographs, blankets, clothing, horse gear and powwow regalia, was included in the exhibition. "Legends of Our Times" traces the history of Native people as buffalo hunters, horsemen, ranchers, and cowboys, and as entertainers and participants in the sport of rodeo. The exhibition begins by presenting the connections between traditional Plains and Plateau cultures and such animals as the horse, the buffalo and the dog—and how these connections influenced the Native cowboy's perspective on ranching and rodeo life.

Rez : Rezervation Rezurrection Reztitution
Feb. 6, 2004 Santa Fe, New Mexico - Rez : Rezervation Rezurrection Reztitution Rez examines the ways that Romero and Noisecat use their craft to resurrect and revitalize indigenous cultural values, thoughts and ideas, thereby providing some restitution for centuries of hardship brought on Native Americans by colonialism and reservation life. Through the use of paintings, sculpture and interpretive text, artists Noisecat and Romero create a context to better understand some of the many complex issues surrounding contemporary Native America. A distinguishing feature of the artists’ work is their ability to transcend typical Native art paradigms of design and subject matter and speak to content-based issues such as: AIDS, environmental justice, alcoholism, gambling and domestic violence within the Native community. Both artists are firmly rooted in the values, traditions, and religions of their communities, making for a powerful mix of traditional and contemporary art. Ed Archie Noisecat
Noisecat draws on the stories of his ancestors to create innovative images executed with extraordinary craftsmanship. His work evokes the rich history of Northwest Coast Native America. It builds on the region’s tradition of great carvers, past and present; yet it has a style, intensity and exacting level of craftsmanship all its own.

Aboriginal topics can be found throughout the collection: in art, literature, history, geography, economics, political science, social sciences, behavioral sciences and humanities. Therefore, when searching for Aboriginal teaching resources, there is no single area of the Curriculum Laboratory, or in the University Library, which holds all the pertinent resources. Before going to find the actual materials, spend a little bit of time brainstorming for words or phrases which could describe the topic. You may also want to think of broader and narrower terms for that topic. If you are unfamiliar with your topic, you may want to use a big dictionary like Webster's Third International Dictionary (CURLB Info Desk 423 Web), or a general encyclopedia like The World Book Encyclopedia (Try "Indian, American") (031 Wor), to generate a list of terms. If the topic is Canadian in scope, it may be useful to consult a Canadian dictionary like The Canadian Oxford Dictionary (423 Can), or The Canadian Encyclopedia, either in the adult edition (971.003 Can) (Try "Native People"), or the junior edition (Try "Native People") (971.003 Jun).

Creation stories teach that Native Americans have been where they are since the world was created. It is also thought that First Americans migrated from Siberia over the Bering Strait about 14,000 years ago, or perhaps even earlier. The land bridge was dry ground for several thousand years before the sea level rose again and stopped migration. The hunters would have followed the migrating herds of large mammals as they moved south. As the glaciers melted, the First Americans spread to the North American coasts and across the entire continent. Native Americans adapted to the climates and terrains in which they lived and used whatever natural resources were available. The arrival of the Europeans in the 1500's began a change in the lives of the Indian people that continued through the next centuries. Sometimes the changes were good. The horses brought by the Spanish made bison hunting much easier and safer. But Vikings, Spanish, English and French explorers, colonists and missionaries spread diseases, made slaves of the people, forced relocations, claimed ownership of natural resources and land, and tried to stamp out the native cultures. Some of the Indian people survived, but not without making drastic changes in their life styles.

The Kootenai Indians lived in the West Kootenay area of B.C. for about 3000 years . As the glacial age came to an end about 10,000 years ago, new land became available . Indian tribes from the south began moving north into this ever-changed land . Rivers changed course and lakes were created and massive amounts of soil were deposited by the four km thick ice sheet . The climate of the West Kootenay was mild and fish were abundant, making life easy for the first Kootenay settlers . The area covered by the seven bands of the Kootenai Indians was from just east of the Rocky Mountains, west to Castlegar, north to Canal Flats, and south 200 km into the U.S.A.
The Indigenous peoples known as the Ktunaxa Indians and often referred to in history books and on maps as the Kootenay Indians live in the Columbia Basin. The Columbia and Kootenay Rivers lie within the traditional territory of the Ktunaxa Indian Nation in British Columbia. It is this system of rivers, lakes and mountains that has sustained the Ktunaxa peoples since time immemorial.
The traditional knowledge of the Ktunaxa concerning their territory is quite remarkable and unique. Some families in the Ktunaxa Indian communities have looked to their cultural lifestyles to build upon a new activity, often referred to as ecotourism.

Spanish and English ships first reached the Northwest Coast from the south in the late 1500s. However, Europeans did not stake territorial claims in the area until the 1770s. In the Nootka Convention of 1790, Spain surrendered its land claims to Britain. Most early contacts between non-Indians and Indians were peaceful and fostered trade relations. The arrival of fur traders to the Northwest Coast in the late 1700s—first Russian, then British and American—initiated a period of extensive trade with indigenous peoples. The Russians, who explored the region from the north, established trading posts along the Gulf of Alaska. Contacts between Indians and non-Indians further increased with the U.S.-sponsored
