Youth learn marksmanship, the safe and responsible use of firearms, the principles of hunting and archery, and much more. The activities of the program and the support of caring adult leaders provide young people with opportunities to develop life skills, self-worth, and conservation ethics. Specific objectives for the program are to: teach decision making, teamwork, self-discipline, self-confidence, and problem solving; promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship, and ethical behavior; encourage an appreciation and understanding of natural resources; develop leadership abilities; build character and willingness to assume citizenship responsibility; furnish enjoyable, positive relationships with peers and adult instructors; strengthen families through participation in lifelong recreational activities; build awareness of related career opportunities. The Shooting Sports curriculum uses the resources of the land-grant university and the time, talent, and dedication of Cooperative Extension agents and certified 4-H leaders, instructors, and trainers who instruct 4-H members in firearms safety and marksmanship. The shooting disciplines include archery, muzzle loading, pistol, rifle, shotgun, and hunting. Each discipline is taught by a National or State Certified instructor. 4-H members have opportunities to test their shooting, hunting, and sportsmanship skills in county, regional, state, and national competitions. In fact, they could ultimately set Olympic competition as their goal. There are seventeen Olympic shooting sports events, which continue to draw the third-greatest number of countries.

2012 Olympic NYC Hypocracy in Shooting Sports !
The Corner on National Review Online : "OLYMPIC SHOOTING EVENTS [John Derbyshire]
New York City's offer to host the 2012 Olympics raises an interesting point: The Olympics includes shooting events. To get medals in these events, a person has to spend years, starting at a young age, practicing with firearms. New York City does everything it can to make this ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE for the city's youngsters. So, though to a lesser extent, does New York State. - John Derbyshire The height of hypocracy is for NYC to sponsor the 2012 Olympics while prohibiting and restricting Junior Rifle Teams from training in the shooting sports . Even though the shooting sports exist on the NCAA 's list of sanctioned collegiate sports, NYC continues to be one of the most restrictive environments in the country today for any aspiring Olympian in the shooting sports. - zzb

In fact, one of the joys (and frustrations for us old-timers) on a slope is to watch a wolf pack of fearless four-year-olds schuss by and spray snow in our faces. What about the bobsledding? We doubt that you see much of it around your home town. So we don't cover it in this article. The same with luge. In fact, we've come to the conclusion that the luge is probably the silliest sport ever devised: Grown men and now women going 90 mph feet-first on a sled. Come on! One tidbit about the luge, however, that raises it somewhat in our estimation: In 1905, when Einstein postulated his Special Theory of Relativity in which he performed a "mind experiment" imagining what would happen if he could ride on a beam of light (that is, travel at a speed of nearly 670 million mph) the fastest speed attained by man on earth up to that time was a little over 90 mph, and it was on a luge! In any event, let's concentrate on how to photograph the winter sports you're more likely to find in your home area.

A comprehensive guide to Olympic Sports.
August 23rd, 2004 by Poromenos One of my favorite pastimes these days is to watch the Olympics. Today, however, I realised that many people may not know what some sports are about or how they are played, so I will do you this huge favor and explain every sport separately.
Aquatics
The Aquatics consist of four sports. The first is swimming, which dates all the way back to ancient Greece, where they liked to throw kids in the sea and watch them try to outswim the sharks. The fastest child with a head got the gold medal. It is still almost the same today, but without the sharks. The second sport is water polo, where athletes struggle not to drown, and if they happen to score while trying to catch the ball (which floats and therefore provides a means of salvation), they win. If they drown, they lose. Then there is diving, where they throw you off a cliff and you have to spin and spin and spin and spin aimlessly and hope you don't land in the water with your belly, because you're dead. Then there is synchronised swimming, which is the most useful sport in real life of the four. There are two athletes who, while falling, have to watch each other and spin simultaneously. The athletes who look the least, win.
Archery
Most of you already know archery, it is the sport in which you get a ridiculously oversized bow which has a computer, a TV and a

The Olympic Games:
Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

Countdown to the Olympic Games
by Dinesh Weerawansa Sri Lanka to compete in three disciplines It's just a couple of days to for the commencement of the greatest sporting event on earth - the Olympic Games. The latest edition of the summer gams would finally return to its birth place - Athens, with over 10,500 sportsmen and women in action for 16 days of exciting competition. Within the 28 sports of the Olympic Games in Greece, there are a total of 37 disciplines. However, Sri Lanka would only compete in three disciplines, namely athletics, swimming and shooting. A discipline is a branch of an Olympic sport comprising one or more events. For example, aquatic sports is an Olympic sport with four Olympic disciplines coming under it - swimming, diving, water polo and synchronised swimming. For a sport to gain a place in the Olympic proper, it must be "widely practiced by men in at least 75 countries and on four continents, and by women in at least 40 countries and on three continents". Let us take the three sports in which Sri Lanka will be fielding teams.

Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.

    How to Photograph Olympic Sports
by Nick Anis On January 15, 2002 I was covering the Olympic Torch Relay as the Olympic flame passed through Los Angeles. Part of the torch relay caravan included a press truck that was 15-20 feet ahead of the torchbearer. I applied for a media pass to be on that truck, but discovered that if I was on the truck, the type of shot I would get would be somewhat limited. Also I might cause the subject I wanted to shoot to not be part of the live coverage of NBC TV News, because my spot on the truck might be bumping a TV News Cameraman for that segment. So I set out to cover it on foot. I picked up one of those nifty "Powerboards" that they sell at Costco for $400. They go 18 miles an hour and can travel 12 miles and for 45 minutes on a single charge. I arrived at the Coliseum and too pictures of all the luminaries who were going to be torchbearers including the one I was shooting (Mario Cruz ... a 18 year-old high school honors student). Then I headed off to the section where Mario was to carry the torch. I noticed most of that segment was kind of shabby looking - at least from a photography point of view. Using the Powerboard I boarded through the entire route looking for a good spot to get a shot. In the middle of his 5 block segment I noticed there was an intersection where the corners looked nice. There was even palm trees and a little landscaping sort of an oasis in the desert, and that's where I decided to shoot. Then I positioned myself on the sidewalk and looked through the viewfinder.
