Shooting

Shooting is one of the most technically skilled of all the events at the Games. It's split into three different disciplines; shotgun, rifle and pistol. Shotgun events involve competitors firing at moving targets, called clay pigeons, while rifle and pistol see shooters aiming at targets between 10m and 50m away. In the six shotgun events the clay pigeons are fired into the air when the shooter asks for them, and the one who hits the most is the winner. There are three different ways for the clay pigeons to be released in the shotgun events.
  • In trap, there are three places targets are launched from. The shooter doesn't know where the targets will come from, and has two shots to hit each one.
  • In double trap, two targets are fired at once and the shooters can only fire one shot at each of them.
  • In skeet, targets are fired from lots of different locations, sometimes in pairs sometimes one at a time. Shooters have one shot to hit each.
In the rifle events shooters hope to hit tiny bullseyes in targets a long way from them.

History
Competing in shooting accuracy has a history almost as old as weaponry itself. During the 19th century , shooters began to organize themselves nationally, and one of these was French pistol champion Pierre de Coubertin , founder of the modern Olympics. This fact certainly contributed to the inclusion of ten shooting events in the 1896 Olympics . Soon World Championships were being organized as well. During the years, the sports have been changed a number of times and new ones have been added. For instance, from the beginning many of the targets had human-like (or in the case of running target, animal-like) shapes; most have now assumed a circular form to reduce the connotations with the use of guns in

Shooting is the act of causing a gun to fire at a target. Shooting also describes sports events where people test their accuracy by firing firearms at artificial, especially designed targets. There are several types of shooting events using different firearms shooting different types of targets (some moving, some static) over different distances. The shooting sports may be usefully broken down by type of gun. For the pistol, there are various Olympic-style sports (?) and two major organizations for what is known as practical shooting IPSC and IDPA . For the rifle, there are several benchrest or hunter marksmanship competitions. For the shotgun, there are a variety of clay target sports. edit
Shooting technique
Precision marksmanship in shooting competition (unlike in combat) can be achieved by proper execution of the seven step checklist in shooting:
  • Stance
Close your eyes and raise the gun naturally without thinking, open your eyes to see where your natural arm position points to. Move your feet along with your body to align the arm with the target. That is the best stance compared to pointing straight forward. Your body is less likely to move in this natural position when the trigger is pulled. Feet should be slightly apart. The shooting arm extended with straight elbow. Proper stance for two hand shooting can be achieved in similar way, though the natural stance will definitely be different.

Shooting is one of the original eight Olympic sports and has been part
of nearly every Modern Olympic Games since 1896. Currently there are
17 Olympic shooting events for both men and women in four different
disciplines; rifle, pistol, running target and shotgun. The current
Olympic shotgun events include trap, double trap and skeet. United
States shooting sports athletes have won six medals in the last two
Olympics, five of which were in the shotgun events; a gold, a silver and three bronze. Shooters have won 72 individual Olympic medals for the United States sine 1896, more than in any other Olympic sport except for athletics and swimming. Headquartered at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, USA Shooting is recognized by both the US Olympic Committee and the International Shooting Sport Federation as the national governing body for Olympic shooting in the United States. There seems to be increased interest in Olympic Trapshooting recently. There
certainly has been an increase in the inquiries that I have received concerning
training youth in the Olympic Trapshooting Disciplines. In the past, such
training opportunities have been limited. That too is beginning to change.
This year there will be two Summer Camps dedicated to teaching young American
Trapshooters the Olympic Clay Target games of Trap and Double Trap.
The first of these, the 2004 Shotgun National Junior Advanced Shooting Camp will
be held Monday, June 21 through Thursday, June 24. This camp is operated by the
National Rifle Association and the Youth Development Shotgun Team with support
of and coaches provided by USA Shooting. I am the head coach of this camp, as I was last year. The purpose of the camp is to identify young shotgunners with potential and to train them in advanced competition skills, including the International Shotgun Disciplines, Trap and Double Trap.

Shooting Sports have been part of the Olympic Games since the modern Olympic Games began in 1896. In Athens, Greece during the first Olympic Games shooters competed in two bigbore rifle and three pistol events. Seventeen Olympic events in four Olympic disciplines (rifle, pistol, running target, and shotgun) will be contested at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia.
Participation has grown steadily through the years. While only four nations competed in the shooting events in 1896, 423 shooters from one hundred different nations participated at the 1996 Atlanta Games in shooting.
In order for a shooter to compete in the Games, the athlete must shoot a minimum qualification score (MQS) for the respective event at one of the International Shooting Sports Foundation's (ISSF) supervised Championships during the four years between Olympic Games.
Women have been allowed to compete since 1972, participating with men until 1980. At the 1984 Games, they took part in a separate program consisting of three events, but they kept the right to compete with the men in the two mixed events - Olympic trap and skeet until 1992. At the 1996 Games those trap and skeet events were conducted for men only. However, a new event - double trap - was added in 1996 that allowed men and women to compete together.

    Collier: Olympic sports to erase
Sunday, July 17, 2005 By Gene Collier, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
You may have noted that baseball and softball have gotten themselves thrown out of the Olympics beginning in 2012, which is good, but the International Olympic Committee, with its customary smug restraint, stopped at only two ejections. Too bad. Here are five more "sports" that are way more erasable and should have gotten a similar defenestration: water polo, shooting, synchronized swimming, fencing and badminton. Maybe if the Olympics started lopping off seven sports at a time, we could eventually get to a place where the Olympics are close enough to killing themselves to spark a reasonable discussion about whether that would be a bad thing. Though nothing formal was forthcoming in the way of reasoning from the IOC on the baseball-softball killing, committee members said publicly that baseball in particular had a credibility problem due to steroid use. That's very close to comical.
