Background: Over the past 104 years of the Olympics, shooting has seen a steady growth in popularity, partly due to improvements in the technology of equipment and firearms. In the 1896 Olympic Games (Athens), there were only three shooting events, compared to the 2004 Olympics which will hold 17 events. Participants must shoot at a tiny bullseye, as far as 50m away. They must maintain total concentration in order to shoot between their heartbeats - and all this while there is noise all around them. Arguably one of the most famous comebacks in Olympic history occurred in shooting. The Hungarian Karoly Takacs was a European pistol champion in the 1930s using his right hand. In 1938, while on army training, a grenade blew up in his hand, destroying his right arm. After the war he won the rapid-fire pistol event with his left hand at the 1948 and 1952 Games - one of only a small number of shooters who have successfully defended an Olympic title.

History of Olympic Game Farm, Inc. For most of his life, Lloyd Beebe, the owner, has had a love of the outdoors and a certain awe for the wildlife of this state. He liked to roam in the mountains and became fairly skilled in observing wildlife on its own turf. He worked as a logger, but in the back of his mind he kept the dream of one day owning his own place. In 1942 that dream came true when he was able to purchase a farm and begin dairy farming. That same land eventually became Olympic Game Farm. Dairy farming is a very demanding occupation, so whenever he could find some spare time, Lloyd knew that a few hours in the mountains observing wild animals on their home ground would refresh his mind from the financial cares and physical labor of making his farm a success. To him, this was recreation in its purest sense. Because it became second nature for him to observe wildlife, the thought occurred to him that he would like to share these experiences with others, but taking people into the woods with him could spoil the whole thing. Using a camera to photograph the things he was seeing so they could be shared was the logical conclusion to which he came. This led him to putting his old car up as collateral at a local bank for a small loan, with which he purchased his first camera. From time to time the Beebes had taken in wild animal orphans. In 1947 there were some of those babies being raised by Lloyd and his wife, Catherine, here at the Farm.

Ian Peel, who works a 45 to 50-hour week in the textile business, trains only at weekends and receives no lottery sports funding, won Great Britain’s second medal of the Games today with silver in the men’s trap behind Michael Diamond of Australia. Diamond, the defending champion, shot 147, only three short of a perfect 150. Peel, 42, from Blackburn, won a close contest with Giovanni Pellielo, from Italy, for second place, to become the first Briton for 32 years to win a medal in the discipline. The last was Bob Braithwaite, another Lancastrian, from Preston, who took gold in Mexico City, having taken up shooting clays because he felt guilty aiming at birds and animals. Like the cyclist Jason Queally, who secured Britain’s first medal, a gold in the one-kilometre time trial on Saturday, Peel’s success was not widely predicted. However, Peel said: "It was not totally unexpected from my point of view. I thought I had an outside chance of a medal, but I was expected to finish in the top 10. "Silver is brilliant, a great feeling, and I am relieved that my last-moment lapse in concentration did not cost me. I missed one late on, so the pressure was on, but I hit all the rest from then on and pulled through." Peel scored 142, Pellielo 140. The final was not as tense for Peel as it might have been because David Kostelecky, from the Czech Republic, missed a shot early. "That helped me," Peel said.
