History
Some form of Shooting has been around since prehistoric times,  when men hunted  prey to secure food or protect themselves from enemies. The ancient Greeks had dove-shooting contests in honour of their gods. By the 10th century, Indians, Slavs, Celts and Germans  all practiced similar kinds of rituals. The invention of gunpowder provided great impetus to the sport, for it led to the development of the gun. The founding of Shooting clubs started in numerous European towns - in Germany and Switzerland, as early as the 13th and 14th centuries.
Little by little, Shooting as a sport became very popular; 1907 saw the creation of what is known today as the International Shooting Sport Federation, originally called the International Shooting Union. Men’s Shooting was one of the nine sports on the programme of the first Olympic Games of modern times in Athens in 1896. In the Paris Games in 1900, live pigeons were used as moving targets; this was eventually considered unethical and unsporting, so after 1900 the pigeons were replaced with clay targets (‘clay pigeons’). The women’s Shooting disciplines were first included in the Los Angeles 1984 Games.  Greece’s first Olympic victories came in 1896. The medallists were: Georgios Frangoudis (pistol, 25 m, gold; rifle, 300 m, silver); Georgios Orfanidis (rifle, 300 m, gold; pistol, 25 m, silver); Pantelis Karasevdas (gras gun, 200 m, gold); and P. Pavlidis (gras gun, 200 m, silver).

Summer 2004 in Athens, Greece

Athens, Greece, will host the 2004 Summer Olympics. For information on Greece, click here . For a page on Greece's flag, click here The Games of the XXVIII Olympiad are being held in Athens, Greece. The opening ceremonies are on August 13, 2004. The closing ceremonies are on Sunday, August 29, 2004. The Ancient Olympics
The ancient Greeks dedicated the Olympic Games to the god Zeus. The original games were held on the plain of Olympia in Peloponnesos, Greece. The Greeks held the first Olympic games in the year 776 BC (over 2700 years ago), and had only one event, a sprint (a short run that was called the "stade"). The race was run by men who competed in the nude. A wreath of olive branches was placed on the winner's head (in Greek, this is called a kotinos). The olive tree was the sacred tree of Athens, Greece. Women were neither allowed to compete in the games nor to watch them, because the games were dedicated to Zeus and were therefore meant for men.

The top to bottom competitive Olympic basketball tournament FIBA envisioned for a future Olympics after rules were changed in 1989 to allow players from the NBA to play in international competitions, occurred in 2004 at the Athens Olympic Games. The Olympic basketball competition and the prestigious Olympic gold medal, once the sole property of the U.S. men's teams which had claimed gold in 12 of the 14 previous Olympic basketball competitions they had competed in between 1936 and 2000, was up for grabs in 2004. And as predicted, the Olympic men's basketball competition in 2004 was indeed the most competitive and unpredictable ever.

FIFTY YEARS HAVE PASSED since Trinidad and Tobago began its Olympic journey. A half century since a team of three athletes travelled to the 1948 games in London with the aim of attaining glory for a small British colony. With the exception of 1960, the last five decades have seen this nation represented in 12 Olympiads with a total of 90 athletes in eight different disciplines: badminton, boxing, cycling, shooting, swimming, track and field, weightlifting and yachting. It wasn't until the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo that Trinidad and Tobago returned to the fold as an independent nation with a team of ten competitors. It was on the athletic track that the greatest prosperity was attained. Edwin Roberts, an outstanding collegian with the University of North Carolina, made it to the final of the 200m where he earned a bronze medal. The 1972 Olympic Games in Munich saw two important records being established. Trinidad and Tobago fielded its largest ever contingent of 20 athletes, among whom a female sprinter, Laura Pierre was included for the first time. Once again, the top performances came on the athletic track.

Shooting with bows and arrows is not treated in this article, but at Archery . Sometimes hunting is also considered a shooting sport, and indeed shooting on live pigeons was once an Olympic event. The shooting sports are categorized by the type of firearm or target used. The web site www.wheretoshoot.org identifies 20 different shooting sports, but does not claim that the list is complete.

    History
Competing in shooting accuracy has a history almost as old as weaponry itself. During the 19th century , shooters began to organize themselves nationally, and one of these was French pistol champion Pierre de Coubertin , founder of the modern Olympics. This fact certainly contributed to the inclusion of ten shooting events in the 1896 Olympics . Soon World Championships were being organized as well. During the years, the sports have been changed a number of times and new ones have been added. For instance, from the beginning many of the targets had human-like (or in the case of running target, animal-like) shapes; most have now assumed a circular form to reduce the connotations with the use of guns in

    THE HISTORY OF SKEET SHOOTING
    An American Game
For close to 20,000 members of the National Skeet Shooting Association, shattering clay targets is a way of life...exercise of the body, mind and the soul. Through winter and summer they shoot at millions of targets - breaking most of them - meet new people and travel across the U.S. It all started on the ground of the Glen Rock Kennels in the town of Andover, Massachusetts in 1920. It was there and then that a small group of upland game hunters, including the late C. E. Davies, proprietor of the Glen Rock Kennels, his son Henry W., and the late William H. Foster, all of Andover, were shooting at clay targets as a means of obtaining wing-shooting practice with their favorite upland guns. Their shooting gradually developed into a regular program that gave each shooter the same series of shots so that the competition, which was inevitable, might be even. Originally, the arrangement was a complete circle of twenty-five yards radius with the circumference marked off like the face of a clock. The trap was set at "12 o'clock" and was set to throw the targets over "6 o'clock". The competitive program consisted of shooting two shots from each of the twelve stations. The shell that was left over from a box was used, first as a stunt, to shoot at an incomer from the center of the circle. This later proved to be a shot offering real snap-shooting practice and has since developed into the plan of Station Eight shots of the regulation program.

A brief history of the Olympic games.
The ancient Olympic games, which are said to have begun in the year 776BC, (when a Greek cook by the name of Koroibos won a 600 feet long foot race at the Stadion track at Olympia), were primarily a part of a religious festival in honour of Zeus the father of the Greek Gods and Goddesses.
By the way the Olympic games was named after Mount Olympos which in Greek mythology was said to have been the home of some of the greatest Greek Gods and Goddesses.
From the year 776BC the games were held every four years for almost 12 Centuries. Literary and Archaeological evidence however suggest that the games may have been held as early as the 9th or 10th Century BC. The early Olympic games were contested by male citizens, who came from every corner of the Greek Empire to compete in Olympia.
In addition to the male Olympics there was a separate festival, where foot races were conducted between unmarried females to honour Hera (The wife of Zeus), but the date of the initiation of this festival is not known.
