While this vessel was in tow of the tug Perth Amboy , five days out of New York City, a fire of undetermined origin broke out aboard the old ship-of-the-line. The third fire in the warship's history started around 10AM and spread quickly. No sooner had the two-man crew abandoned ship, than the towline parted from the flaming bow and the USS Granite State was adrift. Smoke could be seen for miles, but those witnessing the conflagration from shore knew not what vessel burned off their coast. The ship burned fiercely all day, preventing the

Shipwrecks at Point Reyes
San Francisco Chronicle, 1880 The dark, surging waters and treacherous crags of Point Reyes have commanded fear and respect from generations of sailors. These treacherous waters conceal the remains of ships whose crews were unwary, overconfident, or merely unfortunate. Standing on the bluffs and overlooks along the Point, it is worth taking a moment to reflect on these wrecks and what they mean to us. More than just a silent memory of past tragedies, shipwrecks are time capsules, moments of maritime history, captured by fate and waiting at the bottom of the sea to tell their stories. Shipwrecks are more than tragedies of lives and cargoes lost. They offer glimpses into the lives and histories of the ships and their sailors. Some wrecks carry with them the simple items that are rarely passed from one generation to the next. Tools, equipment, and personal items, originally of little intrinsic value, may be priceless as illustrations of the commonplace in their day. Wrecks can also provide final testimonials on ideas and techniques used to build ships that have forever disappeared from the seas.

Preserving Our Submerged Heritage
With increasing awareness of America's underwater cultural heritage, the US National Park Service began documenting the location and condition of shipwrecks in the 1960's. This activity accelerated in the 1970's as park managers became more aware of the richness and international importance of submerged resources in the National Park System. In 1980, the Submerged Cultural Resources Unit (known as SCRU) was formed and staffed by underwater archeologists and photographers to provide the expertise required by managers of national parks with submerged lands. Renamed the Submerged Resources Center in 1999 to include natural resources, the core mission of the program has remained the same: to inventory and evaluate submerged resources in the National Park System and to assist other agencies, nationally and internationally, with underwater heritage resource issues. Over 130 vessels were lost, 26 in Vineyard Haven Harbor alone. After loading coal at Perth Amboy, NJ, the 4 masted schooner

DISASTERS AND MISHAPS – SHIPWRECKS
DISASTERS AND MISHAPS – SHIPWRECKS
The island story of New Zealand could hardly fail to include many chronicles of wreck and catastrophe at sea, but happily the catalogue of disaster is today largely a matter of fairly remote history. The first wreck, or rather, scuttling, recorded, that of the trading ship Endeavour in Facile Harbour, Dusky Sound, dates back to 1795, and a wide variety of craft were lost in the early decades of the nineteenth century before the colonisation of the country. For many years the New Zealand coastline was notorious for its hazards, and the basis of that reputation is to be found in the record of between 1,400 and 1,500 disasters of greater or less degree in the brief span of this country's history. Among early wrecks were the 470-ton barque Maria , smashed to pieces on the rocks at Cape Terawhiti in 1851, with the loss of 26 lives; the 463-ton paddle steamer City of Dunedin , lost in Cook Strait with all hands (14 passengers and a crew of 25) in 1865; the 834-ton schooner St. Vincent
