Numerous diving schools now operate along Turkey 's coasts, particularly in the Aegean and the Mediterranean, and during the summer months around a thousand people go diving each day. In the North Aegean, however, mild temperatures for much of the year make it far easier for even fairly inexperienced divers to explore the large number of British, French and Italian ships sunk around Gallipoli and the Dardanelles in Çanakkale during the World War I. Many Turkish and foreign divers are attracted to this area for the same reason. The Gallipoli campaign commenced on 18 March 1915 when the British navy sought to attack Istanbul via the Çanakkale Strait, or ancient Dardanelles. When their attempt to get through the strait failed, a joint offensive by British, French and Italian fleets was launched on 25 April 1915. As well as a bombardment from the sea, thousands of troops were landed on the Gallipoli peninsular. The unexpected Turkish resistance and military skills of

Shipwrecks and Smuggling
Halsewell Log Book
This collection looks at two areas of international trade that have aroused the curiosity of the British public for hundreds of years: shipwrecks and smuggling.
Britain saw a huge expansion in trade in the 18th and 19th centuries, and as a result hundreds of ships packed with goods travelled between Asia and Europe each year. Shipping traffic in the English Channel was dense, and shipwrecks led to the loss of valuable cargo as well as human lives.
Shipping traffic included the vessels of the East India Company with their huge cargo holds. By 1779, when the captain of the Company ship the Halsewell was writing the first of the log book entries included here, the East India Company was the single largest player in a global market. Documents from the British Library's India Office collection reveal a newly affluent class, with an enthusiasm for imported goods such as cottons, silks, porcelain, tea and spices.
Memorable Accidents
You will also find illustrations of a more romantic attitude to smuggling, in late 19th century reminiscences, anecdotes and songs. Smuggling in these extracts is colourful, with a cast of popular heroes using their wit and imagination to outdo excisemen and other law-enforcers.

or MS Word format (47mb, very large) In 1987, Florida began to develop a statewide system of underwater parks featuring shipwrecks and other historic sites. The shipwreck preserves have become popular attractions for skin and scuba diving visitors to witness a part of Florida's history first-hand. They contain not only interesting archaeological features, but also an abundance of marine life that make the parks living museums in the sea. Each site is interpreted by an underwater plaque; a brochure and laminated underwater guides are available from local dive shops. The parks are open to the public year round, free of charge. There are nine parks at present, and several others under development.
Future Preserves
If, in the course of your underwater explorations, you find a site that might be a potential candidate for a new Underwater Archaeological Preserve, you are encouraged to nominate it for consideration. The Bureau of Archaeological Research invites nominations for new underwater preserves throughout the State of Florida, whether located in inland waters, or offshore within Florida's territorial waters. A preserve should have public access, favorable diving conditions, and interesting cultural and natural site features. If selected, a site may then be designated as a preserve through a cooperative project between government and the public. The development of a new park is an excellent opportunity for a diving group to become involved in an underwater project with lasting results.

  • SAN JOSE 28.53) one of the 1733 Spanish Galleon Fleet that was struck by a hurricane as it struggled up the Florida Coast, off present day Marathon. The San Jose was carrying almost 7 million pesos in gold when she sank, and was salvaged by both Spanish and modern day salvors. Due to the archaic methods of the early, salvors and the scattered remains found by modern salvors, it appears the treasure will never run dry for the weekend potluck hunters of today. The ballast pile is in 35 feet of water but largely covered by sand, although the conditions are usually clear. Most recoveries were made directly S. of the wreck-site, but the area to the N. of the wreck has been largely unexplored, and the backside of the hurricane that hit this fleet (moving west) was driving survivors and remnants of the ship due north. For the pot-hunter, the northern sand patches and areas next to reefs may pay off with recoveries of passenger's personal items. HERRERA - another of the 1733 Galleon Fleet wrecks, this ship is also known as the "figurine" wreck due to the hundreds of animal figurines found on the site. Even though this site has been heavily worked, it still produces figurines for the potluck hunter willing to work the sand patch to the Northeast of the ballast pile. These figurines must be preserved or they will crumble shortly after recovery! Soaking the figurine in distilled water for two years removes the salt, at which time a thinned (with water) layer of Elmers Glue All is applied, after the outside surface dries, to keep the figurine from cracking. Figurines from this wreck are almost 300 years old, please don't bring them up if you're not prepared to preserve them!
