John Dwight Description: freighter, wood.
Dimensions: length 107.4 ft., width 27ft. 3in., depth 7.9 ft.
Tonnage: gross 151.78, other dispalcement - 275.
Propulsion: steam, 1 propeller.
Machinery: 250 horse power steam engine; coal fired boiler Cargo: bootleg ale. The Shipwreck Date Sunk: April 6, 1923. Cause: scuttled. Location: Vineyard Sound, south of Nashawena Island. Coordinates: Loran: It was the "Roaring-20s"; the 18th Amendment was fours years old and prohibition was making the depression all the more depressing. This was the era of speak-easys, bathtub-gin and rum-running. Hooch-laden vessels from Canada would wait, just outside of U.S. Territorial waters, for the cover of darkness or fog when American craft would load the liquid cargo and run it into some deserted stretch of coastline to be sold at a healthy profit. VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass., April 6 - "When a heavy fog which had prevailed for hours lifted today, the Cuttyhunk coast gaurds sighted a vessel about 150 feet long, apparently a steam trawler, flying what appeared to be distress signals. As they watched, the craft suddenly sank."

The exciting history of shipwrecks and rescues which occurred on the Del-Mar-Va coastline is on display at the Life-Saving Station Museum. During the forty year (1875-1915) history of the United States Life-Saving Service, four thousand five hundred (4,500) lives were saved from the "perils of the sea", here, on the Eastern Shore of Delaware, Maryland and the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Over 100,000 lives were saved throughout the United States. Quite an impressive figure! The staff of the museum would welcome a visit from you during the coming year. The vessel was "in ballast" or without cargo, having recently unloaded Kerosene from Bayway, New Jersey. Burgess immediately radioed a distress call, which was picked up by the Coast Guard. However, high winds at the Otis Air Force Base Coast Guard facility on Cape Cod, delayed launch of helicopter "1438", until shortly after noon. Meanwhile high seas drove back two of the Guard's 44 footers injuring crewman in an attempted rescue. Rescue would have to come from the cutters

MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (AP) Like tourists in an underwater museum, divers in the Great Lakes explore shipwrecks searching for remnants of clothes, containers of food or even floating human remains. Divers say it's becoming a popular hobby to journey into the thousands of schooners, steamers and other sunken ships embedded in the depths of the Great Lakes. "It's kind of like exploring a haunted house underwater," said Michael Haynes, who teaches diving lessons in Menomonee Falls. "You start to imagine what it was like aboard that ship. You're touching history." Although shipwrecks are often associated with oceans, the Great Lakes hold an estimated 6,000 to 10,000 sunken ships. About 1,000 Great Lakes shipwrecks have been identified, and about 10 new ships are discovered annually.

8. OTHER INSTITUTIONAL SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ADDRESSES FOR FURTHER HISTORICAL RESEARCH
Over the course of the last decade, research interest in the history of ships and the maritime shipping industry in Canada has increased dramatically. A major component of this renewed interest has been Canada's underwater heritage - the shipwreck. Discovery of the War of 1812 wrecks Hamilton and Scourge in Lake Ontario, and the widely publicized finding of the Titanic served to heighten general public awareness of underwater archaeology and history. Activities of groups such as Save Ontario Shipwrecks (SOS), especially with its emphasis on historical research using archival records, have also contributed to increased demands for information stored in various records repositories across the country. The following notes have been compiled to assist the researcher who wishes to consult federal government records for information relating to shipping losses in Canada. Before describing the major sources of documentation available on shipwrecks in the custody of the Government Archives Division (GAD) of the National Archives of Canada, a few preliminary observations are in order. First, the singlemost important thing to bear in mind is that an archives is not a library. For example, there exists no master list or index to all the records pertaining to shipping losses in Canadian waters at the National Archives. Our federal archival holdings, consisting of subject files and other unpublished documents, are principally arranged according to the name of the department of government that created and/or transferred the records to GAD. Thus, federal records relating to marine casualties are generally located in the documents of the Marine Branch (Record Group 42), Transport Canada (Record Group 12) and National Defence (Record Group 24).

A diver's guide to the Shipwrecks of the Lizard
PART 2: THE EASTERN LIZARD Concluding our survey of wreck sites off the Lizard Peninsula, in Cornwall, we look at wrecks along the coastline from Cadgwith to the Helford Estuary, nine miles further north. (With additional diving details from Kevin Heath)
In spring and summer sunshine, the coast of the Lizard, daubed here and there with brilliant yellow gorse, is a lovely place. Yet people sometimes say that they feel a brooding sense of menace despite this glorious scenery. Perhaps old Celtic gods still lurk in the valleys of the well-wooded Lizard East. Or perhaps, in the case of divers, they are simply suffering from a surfeit of wrecks!
The launch site for many of the wrecks off the eastern Lizard is Cadgwith , a village of thatched cottages which has been squeezed into a valley leading down to a shingle cove where fishing boats are beached. Launching is difficult here, suitable more for small inflatables than big RIBs. Take care to keep out of the fishermen's way - everyone who lives in the village seems to be a fisherman! Car parking is on the outskirts of the village, 2 minutes' walk from the cove.
Cadgwith is shellfish country so don't, whatever you do, flaunt any catch or take more than one for yourself. And don't try a shore dive anywhere near the cove. Keep-pots are moored close in.

James Longstreet Description: Liberty Ship, steel.
Dimensions: length 417.7 ft., width 56.9 ft., depth 37.3 ft.
Tonnage: gross 7176, other displacement - 14245.
Propulsion: steam, single propellor.
Machinery: Cargo: The Shipwreck Date Sunk: Cause: grounded. Location: Cape Cod Bay, off Eastham, inside of Billingsgate Shoal. Coordinates: Loran: On October 26, 1943, gale force winds pushed the "Liberty Ship" James Longstreet onto the flats of Sandy Hook, New Jersey. It grounded on the flood tide so when the storm abated and the tide fell the steamer was high and dry. Badly damaged, the vessel wasn't refloated until November 23rd. Towed to New York for further repairs, it was found to be structurally unfit for sea. The Navy used her as a test ship until it was towed to Cape Cod Bay for use as a target. By 1973 when William Quinn wrote Shipwrecks Around Cape Cod , the steamer's remains were riddled with holes from bullets to bombs. It was likened to a "steel plated Swiss cheese." An aerial photograph taken by Quinn in 1978 shows that 30 odd years of bombing had obliterated the middle of the ship. Today little remains above the surface.

This responsibility often includes the protection of historic shipwrecks. Historical research conducted for MMS studies 89-0023, 89-0024, and 89-0025 indicates that over 400 ships have sunk on the Federal OCS dating from 1625 to 1951; thousands more have sunk closer to shore in state waters during the same period. Only a handful of these have been scientifically excavated by archaeologists for the benefit of generations to come. In several cases, the MMS has partnered with state and Federal agencies conducting this research. The work conducted by the MMS and other scientists in the Gulf of Mexico contributes to our understanding of how our Nation developed by studying the technology that fostered the growth of the United States.
