Gold Rush Shipwrecks At Sutter's Mill on the American River northeast of Sacramento, workers accidentally discovered gold in 1848. The Gold Rush was on! Soon "gold fever" gripped the country. Prospectors and fortune seekersthe 49ersflooded the state. Ships provided the fastest way to the Mother Lode for prospectors from the East. In fact, while we often think of the Gold Rush pioneers crossing the western United States in covered wagons, the fact is that more people came to California by boat. They were the Argonautstravelers on the sea in search of adventure and riches. There were two ways to come to California by sea. The first was to go around the continent of South America. The other was to cross the isthmus of Panama from the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific and board a vessel bound for California. Once in California, the gold fields beckoned. In fact, so many sailors jumped ship to run to the gold fields that crews for ships were scarce. A ghost fleet of abandoned and unmanned vessels anchored in San Francisco Bay. To learn more about coming to California by sea during the Gold Rush, click here So when did the Gold Rush end? Some would say never, but a convenient measure is 1853 and 1854 when more people left California than came here. Two vessels carrying prospectors their gold wrecked in this area only a few day into the first leg of a long journey home.

Cam is involved in many maritime and humanitarian projects, the Government of Sao Tome e Principe have been presented with a proposal from CAM to construct passenger terminals on the Islands, and a port in Principe, this project is essential in supporting the “forgotten Island” of Principe, with our companies opening direct sailings to the African continent from Principe, we are giving the locals free passage to Cameroon's and Nigeria, where they can trade and prosper developing their own businesses, and hopefully make the Island of Principe a major player in trade and industry. Island Expeditions was established in 2005 as an educational project, giving students the opportunity to explore Islands , gaining first hand experience on expeditions, involvement must be more exciting than armchair dreaming. However, thank you for contacting our web site, I think you will find our company interesting and unique.

Western Australia
In 2002 representatives from the New South Wales Heritage Office visited the ABC with a story to tell about a project they had completed regarding famous Shipwrecks off the NSW coast.
The Maritime Heritage Program had researched a number of shipwrecks that had been such a significant part of history that they had a town or landmark named after them. The idea of turning this material into a radio and online series appealed so much it quickly grew from being a New South Wales project to one that looked at famous wrecks in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia as well.
With the assistance of Maritime Heritage state offices around the country, ABC Radio researched the stories, speaking to witnesses and survivors, researchers and historians and in some cases visiting the wrecks with divers.
The result is a collection of exciting tales of intrigue, mystery and adventure on the high seas ... all of which contribute to Australia's colourful past, and the presence of now-famous landmarks along today's coastline.

Historic Shipwrecks - Our Maritime Heritage
The Commonwealth Historic Shipwrecks Program aims to increase knowledge, use, appreciation and enjoyment of Australia's historic shipwreck heritage, while also ensuring the continued conservation, protection and preservation of these wrecks and relics. More than 6 500 wrecks lie just beyond Australia's surf-worn shores. Few of us will ever see them, but each has its own unique story and forms an important part of our heritage. Australia has a rich maritime history which can be traced back some 60 000 or more years to the arrival of Aboriginal people . They were followed later by the Macassans, who came to fish Australia's northern waters. In the 17th century, Europeans, including the Dutch, English and French, began arriving on the coast of the southern continent, having braved extraordinary distances in tiny sailing boats. The earliest recorded shipwreck is the English vessel Trial, which foundered in 1622 on the North West Coast of Western Australia. Other wrecks followed in the 17th and 18th centuries, which saw a number of Dutch East India Company ships foundering on the rocky coast of Western Australia.

Michigan Shipwrecks

The Great Lakes have provided transportation for Michigan's inhabitants for hundreds of years. Thousands of vessels from canoes to car ferries and steamers to modern ore boats have sailed these "inland seas" and unknown numbers still remain - settled on the lakes bottom in watery graves. An estimated 6,000 vessels were lost on the Great Lakes with approximately 2, 000 of these ships located in Michigan waters.
