Introduction Cataraqui Sydney Cove Litherland Brahmin Cambridgeshire Bulli Tasman Svenor Nord Otago Alert Shipwrecks of Tasmania Introduction As an island colony and later state of the Commonwealth of Australia, Tasmania has always been fundamentally dependent on shipping services to connect it to the outside world. However, lying in the path of the winds known as the 'roaring forties', the waters around Tasmania have proved treacherous to mariners. Since the wreck of the ship Sydney Cove in 1797, around 1,000 vessels of all sizes are known to have been lost in Tasmanian waters up to the present day. Although the locations of less than 10% of these shipwrecks are presently known these sites are an important part of our national maritime heritage, a unique gift from our past. While many shipwrecks can only be visited by suitably qualified divers material may also be seen on the sea shore or in tidal zones. Many shipwreck sites are often left unlocated or undisturbed for years and some natural processes of decay and decomposition are stopped or substantially slowed in the underwater environment. For these reasons shipwreck sites are time capsules which can open a window into history. Managing Tasmania's Shipwrecks

The cold fresh water of Minnesota’s lakes and rivers have preserved an important part of our history - in shipwrecks! Each one is a unique and integral part of the fabric of America's maritime heritage. Together, they provide physical contact with and offer an exciting opportunity to explore the past. Because they represent a valuable but finite and nonrenewable resource, we must provide for their protection and preservation. If we don't, the first generation to have ready access to shipwrecks will be the last to enjoy them. In the interest of preserving Minnesota's Lake Superior shipwrecks and other underwater archaeological sites in Minnesota’s lakes and rivers, the State Historic Preservation Office of the Minnesota Historical Society has initiated a program of submerged cultural resource management. The Society hopes you will join its effort to preserve our maritime heritage.

Wreckhunter.net Hunting New England Shipwrecks Famous Wrecks Worldwide Over the past millennium, countless shipwrecks have occurred around the world. Most have been forgotten, but some became famous for a variety of reasons. Some are remembered because of the large number of lives lost, others because of their political importance at the time of sinking. Still others are famous because of their valuable cargos or historical significance. And some are well-known because they are spectacular dive sites. Below are brief histories of some of the world's most famous wrecks. You've probably heard of them, but these mini histories will jog your memory and get you interested in learning more. Along with each write-up, we've provided a picture (click to enlarge) and links to some related sites. Famous Wrecks Worldwide

Researching Shipwrecks Two of the most requested publications of this office have been "Principal Marine Disasters" and "U.S. Merchant Ship Losses". The value of both lists, however, has been greatly exaggerated. The former was a list taken from a standard World Almanac while the latter was a list of American merchant ships that were lost during World War II. In most cases, exact positions of the merchant ships were not known or were approximated. Entries such as, "lost in North Atlantic" were not uncommon. Essentially then these lists are of little use to the serious diver. The following is a list of sources that have some information related to sunken vessels. Also please find a list of books that have been written about shipwrecks. The subject has been well-documented and these sources may provide valuable research materials. POSSIBLE SOURCES OF WRECK INFORMATION The following is a list of both government and private agencies that furnish material and/or information concerning shipwrecks: Library of Congress
