Ship Transport is the process of moving people, goods, etc. by barge boat ship or sailboat over a sea ocean lake canal or river . This is frequently undertaken for purposes of commerce recreation or military objectives. A hybrid of ship transport and road transport is the historic horse-drawn boat . Hybrids of ship transport and air transport are kite surfing and parasailing Parasailing, also known as parascending is a recreational activity where a person is towed behind a vehicle (usually a boat) while attached to a parachute. This included nearly 200,000 pallets of munitions and food to Navy combat ships at sea, as well as wheeled and tracked combat equipment, rolling stock such as bridge sections and artillery pieces, and containers of other unit cargo and munitions to U.S. ground forces operating in Iraq. At the same time, MSC tankers and fleet replenishment oilers delivered 378 million gallons of fuel for the war effort. Naval Fleet Auxiliary force oilers pumped 117 million gallons to Navy surface combat ships for bunker fuel and for their aircraft. MSC-owned tankers and commercial chartered ships also delivered 261 million gallons for use by ground and air forces engaged in the operation. In one unusual operation, an MSC fleet replenishment oiler resupplied a U.S. submarine on extended patrol and running short of food and consumables. More than 250 ships were involved in the massive cargo movement, including combat logistics force ships serving the Navy fleet.

      Service ships and special tankers
The Russian Northern Fleet possesses a number of service ships that are used for the transportation and storage of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel. A number of these ships were originally used for collecting liquid and solid radioactive wastes which were then dumped in the Barents and Kara Seas. (For a more detailed discussion of Russian dumping practices, see Bellona report no. 1 - 1994.) [ Most of the service ships are connected to the navy yards where nuclear submarines are serviced. At the present time, there are six tankers for liquid radioactive waste in commission with the Northern Fleet. In addition, seven ships/barges are used for the storage of spent fuel. Some of the vessels used for the transportation and storage of spent fuel are also capable of storing liquid waste. Most of the service ships do not comply with current safety standards.[ ] The main reason for this is that the ships are old and run down, and routine maintenance has been neglected. All of the tankers in Project 1783 A - Vala class are more than 25 years old.

Military Sealift Command Ships of the Line By Salvatore R. Mercogliano In 1973, with the withdrawal of American forces from Vietnam , the last two troop transports - the third arm of the early military sealift triad, the other two being freighters and tankers - were removed from active service, ending the regularly scheduled operations of these ships. This event marked the true transition point from Military Sea Transportation Service to the modern Military Sealift Command. The initial fleet of troopers consisted of a mixture of several different classes but three primary ones emerged: the C-4 General-class, and the larger and more prestigious, hence better paying, P-2 Admiral and General-classes. C-4 Troopships The C-4s had a long and varied service with MSTS. Initially conceived as a vehicle carrier, similar to the successful Seatrain type vessels, the urgent need to deploy troops overseas and concerns over losses to the ships due to lack of adequate watertight protection, led to their conversion into troop transports. At 532 feet in length, and 12,420 gross tons, they were some of the largest vessels built by the Maritime Commission during the Second World War. They could accommodate 228 officers, 3,595 men, and 6,840 tons of cargo, with a cruising speed of 17 knots. Unlike Navy Attack Transports, troopers lacked the watercraft necessary to transfer their charges ashore and were intended for use in point-to-point operations.

Canadian Support for the Dismantlement of Decommissioned Russian Nuclear Submarines
Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade of Canada
    August 4, 2004
The dismantlement of decommissioned Russian nuclear submarines was listed among the priority concerns enumerated by G8 leaders when they launched the Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction at the 2002 G8 Summit in Kananaskis. Under the Global Partnership initiative, the G8 leaders undertook to raise up to US$20 billion to address a number of non-proliferation, disarmament, counterterrorism and nuclear safety issues, initially in Russia. The end of the Cold War arms race left Russia with a legacy of nearly 200 nuclear submarines in need of immediate dismantling. Over the past 10 years, Japan, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States have supported Russia’s submarine dismantlement process. However, much more now needs to be done by the international community to secure the nuclear fuel on these submarines from both terrorism and proliferation threats, in addition to removing the enormous threat these submarines pose to the fragile ecosystem of the Arctic basin. It is to reduce the threat of both terrorism and proliferation that G8 leaders identified the dismantlement of decommissioned nuclear submarines as a key priority under the Global Partnership. Submarine dismantlement
Dismantling decommissioned nuclear submarines is a lengthy and expensive process consisting of 14 broad steps as outlined below. The total cost of dismantling all of Russia’s decommissioned nuclear submarines will likely reach several billion dollars.

    40. Submarine Cargo Vessel
It is proposed to create a transportation submarine intended for regular export of stabilised (without the draft and trim change) position of the ship
    http://www.ckb-rubin.ru/eng/project/otherp/uwaters/
Submarine Cargo Vessel The idea of submarine cargo vessels able to transfer different, including liquid, cargoes under the ice of the Arctic Ocean irrespective of weather conditions has captured the minds of scientists and engineers long ago. A number of projects and programs were developed recently including the project of American company General Dynamics of a submarine tanker for liquefied gas transportation from Arctic, five-year program of Canadian Government of creation of submarine-surface vessels for oil, gas and other mineral resources transportation, etc. St.Petersburg Design Bureau “Malakhit” holds several patents for submarine tankers and dry cargo ships. Nevertheless, none of these projects and programs was implemented. It might be explained by the fact that all these projects required considerable capital investments in the design and construction of very specific submarine transportation facilities as well as in creation of infrastructure in ports of embarkation-disembarkation and basing of submarine transportation facilities. SOE CDB ME “Rubin” proposed its own concept.
