Review of the Year “SAC has been at the forefront of interpreting the implications of the Mid Term Review of the CAP, undertaking studies to determine the likely impact for farmers and rural businesses around Scotland” SAC delivered consultancy services to more than 12,000 clients during the year, predominantly in Scotland but also South of the border and internationally, covering a wide range of sectoral disciplines from business planning to veterinary sciences. This is a major achievement given the diversity of issues facing our clients and their widespread geographic location.
Supporting Change in Agricultural Policies
Developments in Arable Consultancy
Cereal yields were generally low, coupled with depressed prices which resulted in a poor year for arable farmers. However with a mild Winter and good weather conditions in the Spring, it is hoped this will be reversed for the 2003 harvest.
Potato prices were also low during the year but quality was generally good. SAC has expanded its potato consultancy, with success, to the North of England during this year as well as securing a major consultancy contract with a Japanese snack food manufacturer, providing agronomy advice and training input for their staff.

Cash boost for Staffordshire livestock market
Tuesday 26th July 2005
The future looks bright for one of Staffordshire’s last remaining livestock markets after Advantage West Midlands approved a key segment of funding for a major refurbishment. Leek Cattle Market, originally built in the 1960s, will be modernised in a scheme proposed by Staffordshire Moorlands District Council costing nearly £300,000. Under the plans, many of the existing buildings and pens will be refurbished to provide a modern central market hall, improved penning and new storage buildings. Work is expected to start in the autumn. Advantage West Midlands has approved a £130,000 grant towards the scheme under the Market Towns Initiative. Other public sector funding has been secured from Staffordshire Moorlands District Council (£137,000), and a ten per cent private sector contribution from Leek Auctions Ltd. Leek is home to one of only two livestock markets left in Staffordshire, with a turnover of £3.3 million in 2004.

Animal welfare protesters block sheep ship
September 24, 2003 - 8:02AM Print this article Email to a friend Animal welfare protesters have blocked a sheep livestock carrier from entering a Victorian port this morning. Animal Liberation spokesperson Ralph Hahnheuser said protesters in boats and canoes stopped the livestock vessel, Al Kuwait from entering the port of Portland, on Victoria's south-west coast about 6.30am (AEST). He said about 50 protesters, in 10 canoes and three powered boats, risked high seas to form a blockade forcing the ship to turn back to sea. He said Al Kuwait was believed to be entering the Portland dock to load cattle and sheep for export to the Middle East. Mr Hahnheuser said the protest was aimed to highlight the animal welfare risk posed by live exports. "We'll be here all day if necessary," Mr Hahnheuser told AAP from a canoe in Portland's Henty Bay. "Our intention is very clear ... we're going to stop this ship from docking and loading."

Animal Health and Welfare Strategy for Great Britain: The Evidence Base
Chapter 2: Livestock keeping in Great Britain
2.1 General population trends 2.1.1 In June and December each year Defra, the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department (SEERAD) and the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) run surveys of agricultural holdings in Great Britain. Part of the information collected is on the number of livestock held on holdings. Changes in the population numbers can be due to a number of factors including product demand, prices, profitability, exchange rates, productivity, disease and agricultural policy. Figure 2.1.1 illustrates how the populations of cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry have changed since 1990. The number of cattle has been decreasing since 1996. Sheep populations have been falling since 1999 and pig populations have been declining since 1998. The effect of the Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak on cattle and sheep numbers can be seen in 2001. Figure 2.1.1: Trends in livestock populations in Great Britain since 1990 (June 1995 = 100).

Historic land-use changes and implications of management in a small protected island Géosystèmes (LETG UMR 6554 CNRS), Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer (UBO), Technopôle Brest-Iroise, 29280 Plouzané, France, Tel. 33.(0)2.98.49.86.83, Fax 33.(0)2.98.49.86.86, E-mail: Francoise.Gourmelon@univ-brest.fr Abstract. Keywords agricultural fallow, GIS, potentialities, sheep grazing, vegetation Introduction The study reported here deals with Ushant (Figure 1), a small protected island located off the western coasts of Brittany (France, 1550 ha, 48°28’N latitude, 5°5’ W longitude). The whole island has been exploited by man till the early years of the twentieth century. Then, since 1911 its demography has undergone a drastic fall which reduced its population from 2661 inhabitants in 1911 to about 1000 in 1999. This reduction went along with cultivation abandonment, and led to a nearly complete disappearance of crops (Brigand et al. 1990, This study is aimed at providing one with a better understanding of landscape dynamics while collecting data relevant for the environmental management of Ushant island. So, its specific objectives are: i) to analyse, especially in a quantitative way, the structure of rural landscape at three dates over the period 1844-1992, ii) to implement a comparative analysis of landscape structure changes and grazing pressure decrease, iii) to measure the spatial distribution of the present pastures and their relationships with vegetation and iv) to forecast the potential trends of landscape changes according to sheep livestock.
