Photos of the nature, the wilderness and the bears of Alaska, of the great white shark, the breaching great white shark, tiger shark, bull shark, lemon shark, of other sharks and sea birds, as well as underwater photos from all oceans.
The main focus of the work of Klaus Jost lies on wildlife nature and underwater photography worldwide. Numerous trips in the last few years have led him among other things to the big bears in the wilderness of Alaska and to Canada . The results are photos of the nature , the wilderness , the salmons , the Brown Bears , and of the Polar Bears of the Hudson Bay . He is extremely fascinated by the bears.
His special interest lies in the Great White Shark Tiger Shark and Bull Shark , which are potentially dangerous to humans (any animal could be dangerous to humans) - and the whole underwater world. Decades of experience as a marine engineer and underwater specialist in several oceans of the world fit in very well with his work. Klaus Jost has spent almost 13,000 hours under water in large-scale harbour construction projects alone for professional reasons, and has got to know the fauna and flora of most tropical countries very closely. One aim of Klaus Jost is to document the types of sharks on the red list.
Especially fascinating are the photos of the albatrosses - they are flying artists, feeling extremely well with gales and towering waves - as well as of the other sea birds of the oceans.

Hammerhead Sharks
Misunderstood Monsters
Believe it or not, sharks are an advanced evolutionary species. Why wouldn't they be - they've been around for 25 million years. Hammerheads display characteristics that aside from mammals, few other animals exhibit. These characteristics include internal fertilization, live birth, large brains and a high degree of learning ability. Sharks do not normally bite humans. Sharks will bite in self defense, although they must be provoked (for example - pulling their tale) to attack. Hammerheads, when left alone to swim the oceans, will avoid humans whenever they can. What is a shark? A shark is a fish with a skeleton made almost entirely of soft, flexible cartilage where as you and I are made of hard bones. Since a shark is not made of bone at all, minerals deposit into their teeth and backbones making them as strong and as hard as bone. Hammerhead sharks are classified into the order of Carcharhiniformes. That means that they are ground sharks, they have an anal fin and two dorsal fins without spines, five gill slits, their mouth is behind their eyes and they have a spiral intestinal valve. The hammerheads spiral intestinal valve is like a spiral staircase. Food passes through this valve extremely slowly. This slow rate means that hammerheads can not feed often, contrary to popular belief, and they have a very slow growth rate. Hammerheads five gills allow the shark to breathe by extracting oxygen from the water and then pushing it over the gill slits.

http://www.seasky.org/reeflife/sea2i.html
Page 1 Great White Shark
(Carcharodon carcharias) No animal inspires more fear in the mind of man that the Great White Shark. It is an aggressive and ruthless hunter, and in many ways, the ideal predator. This shark has been known to grow to over 25 feet in length. The Great White is very common in the Pacific ocean. They will eat almost anything, but prefer to dine on sea lions and other marine mammals. Tiger Shark
(Galeocerdo cuvier) The Tiger Shark is another ferocious predator. It is second only to the great white in its size and reputation as a killer. Tigers can grow to a length of over 16 feet. This shark has a big head, blunt snout, and gets its name from the stripe marks on its body. This dangerous shark will eat almost anything, and has been known to attack humans. Scalloped Hammerhead Shark
(Sphyrna lewini) The Scalloped Hammerhead is just one of several species of sharks that are characterized by a large hammer-shaped head. The shark's eyes are located on either end of this wing-like structure. This shark grows to a length of 14 feet, and feeds mainly on small fishes and invertebrates. It is an aggressive species and has been known to attack humans. Blue Shark
(Prionace glauca) The Blue Shark is a slender species that gets its name from the bright blue color of its tail and fins. It can be identified by its long, thin body and long, conical snout. The Blue is one of the most common sharks in the sea, and is found in many parts of the world. They are often seen swimming lazily at the surface, but have also been seen at depths of over 1600 feet.

Shark fears prompt swim ban on Florida beach
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Florida (CNN) Hoping to avoid shark bite incidents, Volusia County, Florida, authorities on Saturday banned all water activities off a one-mile section of New Smyrna Beach, south of the Ponce de Leon inlet jetty. "We just want to be cautious," said Volusia County Beach Patrol Deputy Chief Joe Wooden. "We'll be monitoring from the beach, a boat and the sheriff's helicopter." Surf was low and winds were calm off the coast Saturday. Officials were monitoring the waters for a cluster of sharks that live in these bait fish-rich waters, ever since a series of shark-bite incidents began several weeks ago. Eight people were bitten in the past week; 18 so far this year. Deputy Chief Mike Hensler said they are watching a large influx of sharks on the New Smyrna side of the Ponce de Leon Inlet. "It's a very popular area, specific to surfers," Hensler said. "We still have 46 miles of beach the public can use in Volusia County. It's just a small strip that's closed to swimming."

SHARK CONSERVATION
THROUGH LEGISLATION
Sharks are graceful, beautiful and powerful.
They are also V A N I S H I N G. prohibiting the finning of sharks and also set restrictions to limit bycatch and wasteful fishing practices. There is also a push now in the U.S. Congress to ban shark finning in all U.S. waters. Please give your support by writing to Congressman Randy "Duke" Cunningham www.house.gov/cunningham/ and The U.S. Fishery Subcommittee.
"What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone man would die from great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, also happens to man. All things are connected." Chief Seattle of the Squamish Tribe (1855) As a result of overexploitation by sport fisherman and fisheries, many shark species' populations have been so drastically reduced that they may never recover. Because of the sharks' limited reproductive potential, they are especially vulnerable to overexploitation and slow to recover from depletion. For a creature of such grace and beauty with near perfect design to vanish from the earth, of which it has been a part for over a million years, is a perversion of nature with dire consequences. Sharks are vital to the marine's ecosystem and must be safeguarded against extinction. Legislation is now necessary to ensure that their annihilation is never realized. There is a great need for shark quotas to be enforced for many species whose populations are known to be depleted as well as that of species whose populations are unknown until information is obtained regarding their status.

178. Hammerhead Sharks
Hammerhead sharks . Underwater photography and journalism by John Liddiard.
http://www.liddiard.demon.co.uk/photoix/hammerhead/hammerhead.htm
Hammerhead Sharks
Swimming out across the reef and down a vertical wall, we were immediately aware of scalloped hammerheads scything through the water beneath us, heads sweeping from side to side. Continuing our descent and staying close to the wall, we soon found more hammerheads passing above us and around us. There seemed to be one enormous shoal of hundreds of hammerheads cruising up and down the wall. As the dive continued, the number of hammerheads just got more and more. It often took several minutes for the shoal to pass by. Towards the end of the dive we just held position at the edge of the reef and the top of the wall and watched them all pass one way and then back the other way.
Small groups would regularly break off from the shoal and swim up and into the shallows to a cleaning station. When ready for cleaning they would stop swimming, turn on one side and hold still while angel fish and wrasse pecked away at their skin. They were much more cautious of divers while being cleaned. Whereas the hammerheads would swim quite close to divers on the reef wall, at the cleaning station they would swim away before I could get close enough for good pictures.
One of the reasons that scalloped hammerhead sharks form these enormous shoals is to do with mating. The females manoeuvre for position in the middle of the shoal, with the biggest occupying pride of place in the centre. By being in the dominant position the females make themselves more attractive to the males. At night, the shoals disperse while the individual sharks hunt for food, with males and females pairing off for mating. When mating, the male wraps his body about the female and holds on with his teeth. Many of the large females in the shoal had very obvious scars on their sides as a consequence. As the day breaks, the sharks return to re-form the shoal and the whole dance is repeated.
