Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, Australia has rights and responsibilities over 16 million square kilometres of ocean - more than twice the area of the Australian continent. Within this area live thousands of marine species, some of which are unique to Australia and all of which contribute to making Australia the most biodiversity rich developed country. The Australian Government uses the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) to protect and manage threatened, migratory and marine species. Threatened species are listed under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 . Threatened marine species conservation and management involves:

Only a few of Hawaii's two dozen species of sharks are featured in this 35,000 gallon exhibit along with other hunters on the reef. The blacktip reef shark is easily recognized - look for the jet-black marking on the tip of the fin on its back. The blacktip reef shark is relatively small reaching a maximum length of only 6'. Blacktip reef sharks usually stay clear of people - unless a diver is carrying speared fish. This species inhabits shallow reefs throughout the tropical Pacific and Hawai'i, and can often be seen with the black tip of its dorsal fin projecting from the water.
Sharks are not the only hunters on coral reefs. Jacks, or "trevally", are among the largest and most common reef predators. Locally, they are known by their Hawaiian names: "ulua" for the adults and "papio" for the young. The white jack, or ulua aukea, is the largest species reaching a length of five feet and weights of over one hundred pounds. Jacks are voracious predators and are most active just after sunset when they feed on reef fish.
Sharks and jacks are both fishes, but spend a few minutes comparing them and see how different they are from each other. Look at the shape of the fins. The shark's pectoral fins stick out from its sides like the wings of an airplane, and in fact they function much the same way providing "lift" as the shark swims. Notice, too, how different shark's and jack's tails are. And internally, sharks have lightweight skeletons made of cartilage much like the material in our ears. Jacks have skeletons made of hard mineralized bone similar to our own. These hunters on the reef are truly among the most magnificent animals in the sea.

School of sharks seen off Florida coast
One of dozens of sharks taped swimming off the Florida coast this week SARASOTA, Florida (CNN) Dozens of sharks were spotted swimming in shallow water near the shore of Siesta Key on Thursday. The latest sighting came just two days after a similar school was captured on videotape farther north. It was not known what type of sharks were gathered nor whether they posed a danger to swimmers or boaters. "It's too early for us to know any of that," said Sue Ellen Richardson, spokeswoman for The Florida Aquarium in Tampa. VIDEO For the second time this week, an unusually large school of sharks was seen in shallow Florida waters. CNN's Joie Chen talks reports (August 16) Play video (QuickTime, Real or Windows Media) Tuesday, hundreds of sharks were videotaped in shallow waters off Anclote Key, north of Tampa. Sharks frequent the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, and scientists said such large numbers are not unusual. Still, the large school had prompted authorities to alert swimmers and fishermen Tuesday to possible danger. RELATED STORIES: Hundreds of sharks spotted off Florida August 15, 2001

Those Predatory Sharks...
Predatory animals inspire a sense of awe, respect and fear among humans. On land, big cats, wolves, and bears are some of the quintessential predators. Dip beneath the waves, however, and sharks take the stage, alongside orcas, sperm whales, and large squids and fishes. Although there are many marine predators, it is the sharks that have been most stereotyped as the "killers from the deep". There's no denying the fact that sharks are carnivorous and predatory. Generally, however, sharks have a more diverse diet than usually credited by the general public. The giant filter-feeding basking shark (

Roots rock band. Photos, sound files, CD information.
http://home.the-wire.com/~danda/
The Tiger Sharks formed in Guelph, Ontario in 1988. A three piece band including Brent Freeman on lead guitar and vocal, Derek Winkler on upright bass and Bill Bruder on percussion.
The Tiger Sharks at one time had as members Dave Fearnley on acoustic guitar and vocals, and Mike Jessop on rythym guitar.
The Tiger Sharks entertain a number of serious fans as well as people who enjoy the flavour of boppin' roots rock music. When the Sharks are on stage there's scarcely a still foot to be found. Regular appearances on the Queen Street circuit in Toronto, paticipation in the 1990 Molson Rockabilly Festival at Toronto's Harbourfront and several appearances on CityTV's Breakfast Television have all aided in the evolution of the band's popularity, not to mention the band's tight, solid sound.
In February of 1991, The Tiger Sharks travelled to Memphis, Tenessee to record their first album at the legendary Sun Studio. The band returned to Memphis in early September of 1991 to complete their original tracks.
While at Sun Studio The Tiger Sharks met Scotty Moore, Carl Perkins and D.J. Fontana.

In some form, sharks have been around for about 400 million years. Even before dinosaurs roamed the earth, sharks hunted through the oceans! They're such good survivors that they've had little need to evolve in the last 150 million years.

STATUS OF THE WHITE SHARK IN EUROPEAN WATERS OF THE EASTERN NORTH ATLANTIC OCEAN
    Ian K. Fergusson

IUCN Shark Specialist Group (Mediterranean Region)
Updated June 2003 from original, September 1999

AFTER the media circus surrounding Cornwall's alleged white shark sighting during 1999 and a recent resurgence in interest for British 'records' of this species, it is worthwhile to reflect upon the confirmed status of the white shark within European waters of the eastern North Atlantic Ocean. Essentially, what follows summarises and expands upon Fergusson (1996) and Quero et al (1978). The views expressed are not peer-reviewed - this is merely a casual discussion piece. A rare beastie
Firstly, let's be concise here in terminology: Carcharodon carcharias is exceptionally scarce in the eastern North Atlantic Ocean. This simple but indisputable fact can be confirmed not only by the extreme paucity of specimens caught in any one decade by the intensive commercial fisheries operating all the way between the Shetlands and Senegal, but moreover through examination of historical literature. Despite some highly dubious citations - notably those of earlier (18th and 19th Century) British ichthyofaunal lists such as by Pennant, Lowe and Hamilton - the white shark is not reliably confirmed from any European nation north of France. United Kingdom records are especially doubtful. We should pause to remember here that another lamnid shark - the shortfin mako

Search by:  Keyword Title Author DANGER DANGER DANGER For every human killed by a shark, 2 million sharks are killed by humans. Twelve million sharks are killed by humans each year, compared to six humans killed by sharks. At the rate at which shark fishing is proceeding, humans are jeopardizing world populations of apex predators that are essential to the health of marine communities. SHARKS Sharks, which comprise only about 1 percent of all living fishes, are highly evolved representatives of a large and unique group of fishes - the cartilaginous fishes, or class Chondrichthyes.
Characterizing sharks: Sharks are jawed fishes. Like all fishes they are aquatic, water-breathing vertebrates with a brain and spinal cord; fins; plate-like pairs of internal gills; and paired sense organs. Unlike most bony fishes, sharks do not have swim bladders or lungs. Sharks' jaws are simple but effective structures, armed with transverse rows of hard teeth that are replaced slowly but continuously. These teeth are not in sockets, but attached to the jaws by soft tissue.
Fins: All sharks have paired fins - pectoral and pelvic - on the underside of the body. The pectoral, or breast, fins are located just behind the gill region of the head. The pelvic fins are on the rear of the abdomen just in front of the tail. In male sharks, each pelvic fin has a clasper, or copulatory organ, for implanting sperm inside the vent (the common reproductive and excretory opening) of the female. The vent is located between the pelvic fins in both sexes. Most sharks have a cylindrical or slightly depressed head and body; a strong tail with caudal, or tail, fin; one or two dorsal fins on their back; and an anal fin on the underside of the tail behind the vent.
