A Classification of Sharks
Starting from the top, sharks are classified as:
Kingdom
Phylum
Subphylum
Class
Subclass
Order
Animalia
Chordata
Vertebrata Chondrichthyes Elasmobranchii Selachii
There are five suborders of sharks: Hexanchiformes, Pristioformes, Squatiniformes, Galeiformes, and Squaliformes. Within each of those suborders are multiple families and genuses, as listed below. Examples of individual species are listed by common name in parentheses. This is a provisional classification of sharks obtained from Richard Ellis' The Book of Sharks . As Ellis states, "My systematic list is scientific only in that it is homogenized from other classifications . . . I am sure there will be those who disagree with the system I have proposed. That is what taxonomy is all about." Suborder Hexanchiformes Family Hexanchidae (six-gilled and seven-gilled sharks) Genus Hexanchus (six-gill sharks) Genus Heptranchias (sharpnose sevengills) Genus Notorynchus (broadnose sevengills) Family Chlamydoselachidae Genus Chlamydoselachus (frilled shark) Family Heterodontidae Genus Heterodontus (hornsharks) Suborder Pristioformes Family Pristiophoridae (sawsharks) Genus Pristiophorus (five-gill sawshark) Genus Pliotrema (six-gill sawshark) Suborder Squatiniformes Family Squatinidae Genus Squatina (angel sharks, monk sharks)

Conservation of Fish Species - Whale Sharks
Whale Shark ( Rhincodon typus Western Australia is privileged to be one of the few places in the world known to be visited by the mysterious whale shark ( Rhincodon typus ) on a regular basis. Each year, just days after the mass spawning of corals on the Ningaloo Reef (near Exmouth) in March and April, whale sharks appear in the waters along the front of the reef, remaining for up to a month. It is thought that they come to feed on an explosion of marine life that feeds on the coral spawn. Most of these visiting whale sharks are immature males. It remains an intriguing puzzle why this particular section of the population visits our coast. Whale sharks will grow to over 12 metres in length, which is about the size of a large bus. These gentle ocean giants are often confused with whales because of their large size and feeding habits. They are, however, sharks, albeit the least fearsome of this group, and their closest relatives are the nurse and wobbegong sharks.

American Alligator ... Make a Difference SHARKS
Factoid #1: Sharks can find prey by following the electrical impulses that animals emit, and some species of shark can smell a drop of blood in one million drops of seawater.
Factoid #2: Sharks have an unlimited supply of teeth that are set in layered rows in the gums. If one tooth falls out, a tooth from another layer takes its place. A shark may shed as many as 50,000 teeth in its lifetime. This is one reason why prehistoric shark teeth are the most commonly found fossils.
Status: Unknown, but in general, species are declining.
Population: The worldwide population of each species of shark is unknown.
Threats: Shark populations in many areas have declined from excessive fishing and unintentional catching in fishnets. Survival: Scientists often examine animal teeth to determine age, but this technique isn't possible with sharks because they go through so many teeth during their lives. This makes determining the age of a shark difficult, so the lifespan of sharks isn't known. There are at least 350 species of shark ranging from the smallest, the pygmy ribbontail catshark (8 to 10 inches long) to the largest, the whale shark (upto 45 feet long).

Introduction
Sharks are a valuable part of marine ecosystems and NOAA Fisheries is committed to conserving shark populations. Most sharks are vulnerable to overfishing because they are long-lived, take many years to mature, and only have a few young at a time. Recovery from overfishing can take years or decades for many shark species. Therefore, sharks need conservation and NOAA Fisheries is conducting research, implementing restrictions and working with fisherman domestically, and pursuing international conservation. These steps will ensure that those shark populations that are healthy remain so and those shark populations that are overfished recover. It's The Ocean, Not A Swimming Pool

Image courtesy of David Sims/MBA Basking sharks are cannier hunters than previously thought, a report in the Journal of Animal Ecology has claimed.
A tagging study has shown that the massive fish adapt their diving behaviour to foil the escape strategies of their main prey, zooplankton. It is the first time these sharks have been witnessed deviating from their seemingly rigid routines. The researchers hope to inform conservation initiatives as well as illuminate basking shark behaviour. "This has big implications for conservation," said co-author David Sims from the Marine Biological Association (MBA), UK. "With this information [ecologists] can build in the probabilistic estimates for how often you should see a shark in [UK] waters." BBC News, Sydney
The aquarium in Sydney is one of the largest in the world An Australian woman is suing Sydney Aquarium after a giant exhibition tank exploded, showering her with glass - and sharks.
The accident left Hazel Swinden, 61, in chest-high water with a badly gashed ankle caused by flying debris. She claims to have suffered post-traumatic stress as a result. One moment Ms Swinden was admiring the reef sharks at Sydney Aquarium and the next she was surrounded by them with blood pouring from a deep cut. A glass tank had shattered, dumping thousands of litres of water on top of her. The woman's lawyer has told a Sydney court how she was submerged for several seconds and could feel the sharks brushing past her. She claims that acute stress forced her to give up her job as a sales assistant.

After nearly a week of searching, the Bryan County Sheriff's Office says a fisherman discovered the body of 48-year-old Vito Bertucci of Port Royal Thursday morning when it surfaced in Ossabaw Sound in Chatham County. The Coast Guard says 48-year-old Vito Bertucci from Port Royal went diving in the Ogeechee River near the Intercoastal Waterway in Bryan county about 2:30pm Sunday and told his partner he would surface in about 2 hours, but never came up. The Coast Guard says the friend in the boat reported the diver missing about 5:00pm Sunday. Search teams with the Coast Guard, Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Chatham and Bryan counties scoured the water for him Sunday night and Monday. The Georgia Department of Natural Resources, Bryan County Sheriff's Office Marine Rescue Squad and a Beaufort Volunteer Dive Search crew continued looking for Bertucci Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Local divers say Bertucci is an experienced diver, and he was collecting artifacts for a museum he operates in South Carolina. Some divers also say he took a deadly risk diving in a 10-feet current. Dive teams say it was an exhausting search in the Ogeechee River, in an area one diver described as a black hole.
