They never really sleep, never stop swimming and are always ready to attack! A attack consists of a type of musical performance, commonly referred to in the reefs as Surf Music. This type of shark attack was witnessed in great proportions primarily in Southern California in the early 1960s. For a time, it was thought these attacks had all but dissappeared from both coastal and inland terrain. However, recently, these Surf Music attacks have been documented by anthropologists as being on the rise once again. Alarmingly, these most recent attacks have been noted worldwide and there is no sign of the phenomenon going away. are a unique subspecies of particular curiosity to anthropologists and elasmologists. They are particularly immune to shark repellant and the species is expected to survive into the 21st century....

Hundreds of sharks spotted off Florida
One of the hundreds of sharks spotted Tuesday north of Tampa, Florida. TAMPA, Florida (CNN) Officials issued public warnings Tuesday after hundreds of sharks were spotted in the waters off the west coast of Florida north of Tampa. Kevin Doll, public information officer for the Pasco County Sheriff's Department, said officers from the department's marine unit spotted the sharks from the air. Doll said several types of sharks were in the waters near the island of Anclote Key, including bull sharks, hammerheads and black-tipped sharks. Some of the sharks were reported to be more than 10 feet long. Sharks have been in the news recently after several highly publicized attacks. On July 6, a young Mississippi boy had his arm bitten off by a shark at Pensacola Beach in northwest Florida. Doctors were able to reattach the boy's arm, and he is now recovering at home. You are watching live feed from the Australia Gallery in our new " Sharks: Myth and Mystery " exhibit. This tropical reef exhibit features pelagic stingray and scalloped hammerheads . Unlike other rays, which spend most of their time near a sandy seafloor, the pelagic stingray lives in open waters. Its tail is nearly twice as long as its body and possesses one or more long spines.
With that wide, thick head shaped like a double-headed hammer, it’s easy to identify a hammerhead shark. The shark’s eyes and nostrils are located at the extreme ends of its head.

The Great White Shark The White Shark: Introduction Many paleontologists are very interested in living groups, because the study of the living organisms can both unlock their evolutionary history and provide important keys towards interpreting their fossil record. Some living groups have ancient histories. For example, sharks have existed as a group for over 350 million years! Today, sharks and rays (elasmobranchs) are represented by over 600 species that show a remarkable range of ecological and morphological diversity. Unlike the true fishes, sharks do not have internal bone, but instead have a cartilaginous skeleton. Although many people are told that sharks are primitive in comparison to other groups, this is not true. Many sharks are efficient and specialized hunters that have thrived for millions of years. This small exhibit shows an amazing predator: the great white shark Carcharodon carcharias ). The white shark is found in temperate waters throughout the world's oceans, and it is an important, though not common, predator in California`s coastal habitats. Scientists from several organizations throughout California including the Point Reyes Bird Observatory, the Marine Mammal Center, the California Academy of Sciences , Bodega Bay Marine Laboratory, California Department of Fish and Game, and the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology at U.C. Berkeley, have been studying white sharks and their prey for several years in hopes to better understand their behavior and ecology.

    79. Introduction To The Chondrichthyes
UCMP Berkeley s introduction to the cartilaginous fish, including sharks.
    http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/vertebrates/basalfish/chondrintro.html
    Introduction to the Chondrichthyes
    Jaws
Sharks, skates, rays, and even stranger fish make up the Chondrichthyes, or "cartilaginous fish." First appearing on Earth almost 450 million years ago, cartilaginous fish today include both fearsome predators and harmless mollusc-eaters (harmless, that is, unless you are a mollusc). A number of shark and ray species are fished, commercially or for sport. Members of the Chondrichthyes all lack true bone and have a skeleton made of cartilage (the flexible material you can feel in your nose and ears). Only their teeth, and sometimes their vertebrae, are calcified; this calcified cartilage has a different structure from that of true bone. Thus, preservation of the whole body of a cartilaginous fish only takes place under special conditions. This complete fossil rhinobatoid (guitarfish one of the earliest rays), Rhinobatis , shown on display at the Senckenberg Museum in Frankfurt, Germany, is from the Upper Cretaceous of Haqel, Lebanon, a place that has yielded many complete fossil sharks and rays.
UCMP Special Exhibit: Great White Shark
Former UCMP graduate student Doug Long has worked extensively with living great white sharks, as well as with fossil sharks and fish. You can learn about the great white shark from his exhibit.
