42. About Prehistoric Sharks-Megalodon,fossil Teeth,
A detailed look at the evolutionary history of sharks and Sharklike fishes from the Shark Attacks website.
http://www.sharkattacks.com/prehistoric.htm
Inhabitants Of Ancient Seas There were sharks in the oceans of earth long before the first animals had begun to colonies the land surface. Their history stretches back for at least million years, a vast period of time which makes the 2-million-year-old history of humans genus Homo) seem insignificant by comparison. The planet earth is at least 4500 million years old. The earliest signs of life date back 3000 million years, and by 600 million years ago quite complex animals and plants existed. The story of the backboned (vertebrate) animals -the fishes and other forms that eventually led to humans -began about 600 to 500 million years ago. The first definite fossil of a creature with a stiffening notochord along its back was a Cambrian animal called Pikaea, which was discovered in 560- million-year-old rocks in Canada. The oldest complete fish fossil so far found came from central Australia, and was ajawless, armoured fish called Arandaspis

assessing the dangers within a rational context
Let us try to assess the facts by first freeing ourselves as much as possible from ideological conditioning, from whatever perspective. The facts: sharks are cartilaginous ocean dwelling fish, with many species giving birth to live young. Their bodies have remarkably rapid regenerative powers from wounds and injury. Within their own biome they are usually the 'top predator', meaning that they form the apex of the marine food pyramid, regulating imbalances that occur further down the chain. However, in common with the 'lazy' behaviour often observed amongst many land-based top predators, at least part of a shark's diet may in fact be scavenged - as this activity poses far less risk. From such a priveleged position in the predation hierarchy, there are few marine creatures that pose a threat to them, although they do need to maintain a respectful wariness around salt-water crocodiles, dolphins, killer whales, and also other sharks. The biggest threat to their existence continues to be posed by man. Recent research suggests that sharks are characteristically: a) curious b) cautious c) highly predictable d) a lot more intelligent than was previously thought to be the case.

Welcome to Ethan Gordon Photography
As part of our ongoing commitment to serve our customers better, we have created this web site. The site was two years in the making. Thousands of images have been scanned, captioned, identified, and logged for our online database. At the time of launch, the web site has a searchable library of nearly 3,000 images. By mid 2005, we plan to have over 4,000 images. Although the online selection is great, we have many slides in our photo library which may not have been entered into our database and are unavailable online. Simply contact us to do a custom image search for you. Whether browsing the pre-made galleries or doing your own image search , you will have the ability to add any image to your "lightbox." The lightbox is your own custom gallery. As long as you use the same computer, it will automatically remember what is in your lightbox. As an added convenience for you, we have added the ability for you to submit your lightbox to us at Ethan Gordon Photography. We can instantly see the same images you are looking at and answer any questions that you might have. Enjoy the site, and please

How Sharks Work
by Tom Harris
Table of Contents Introduction to How Sharks Work Shark Anatomy Underwater Basic Shark Senses Extra Shark Senses Shark Teeth Daily Life of a Shark Threats to Sharks Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Sharks are surely one of the most fearsome creatures on Earth. But they are also one of the most sophisticated and enduring. The oldest shark fossils date from more than 300 million years ago, before the age of the dinosaurs. And a few existing shark species, such as the hornshark, have kept the same basic physical characteristics for more than 150 million years. Photo courtesy Carl Roessler A rare, tiger ragged-tooth shark, photographed off the coast of Columbia Scientists attribute this remarkable longevity to the shark's superior physiological developments. Sharks are outfitted with several special characteristics that make them highly effective, both as hunters and survivors. In this article, we'll examine these unique qualities to see why the shark is top dog in the ocean.

Shark s Field Trip
Trailhead Teacher's Resources Start Field Trip Did you know that about 80% of the shark species have never attacked humans? Sharks are found in all the oceans of the world, but there are only four species that are considered dangerous: the great white shark (known to most of us courtesy of the movie "Jaws"), tiger shark, bull shark and oceanic whitetip shark. Humans are not the preferred food of sharks despite public hysteria and opinion to the contrary. Research suggests it to be a case of mistaken identity. Read about this and much more on this virtual tour of sharks. Objectives
  • Students will be introduced to sharks and their environment. Students will learn why a shark is a fish and not a mammal. Students will be taken to various Web sites where they can research various types of information about sharks. Students will learn why sharks are on the endangered species list and learn about how they can participate in the conservation of these amazing animals.
