As for the second part, wild dogs receive total legal protection in Mozambique. However, the outlook is not hopeful. Published reports indicate that there was a rapid decline in wild dog numbers after 1975, due to unregulated sport hunting, persecution by cattle farmers, and degradation of habitat. There are no records of disease. Wild dogs cross the border from Kruger National Park, South Africa in the south, and are also common in southern Tanzania to the north so, should conditions improve, Mozambique might be ideally placed for recolonization. The planned cross-border park envisaged joining Kruger to Mozambique will be of great benefit to wild dogs.

It is as large as Germany, France and Italy put together. At 35° south latitude, Cape Town is about the same distance from the equator as Sydney, Australia, or Los Angeles in the Northern Hemisphere. The country’s 2,945 kilometre coastline is washed by the cold Benguela current on the Atlantic and the warm Mozambique-Agulhas current on the east. The climate is moderate and the topography ranges from highveld grasslands to semi-desert to subtropical swamps, which are home to some of the world’s most diverse animal and plant kingdoms. South Africa is the only country with an entire floral kingdom - the Cape "fynbos" - within its borders. Most people live in the eastern regions where the higher rainfall, better soil and rich minerals offer more employment. Over a third of South Africans live in the four high population areas of Johannesburg / Pretoria / Vereeniging in Gauteng; Durban / Pinetown / Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal; the area around Cape Town; and the Port Elizabeth/Uitenhage area in the eastern Cape. South Africa boasts some of the earliest evidence of the emergence of the human species. For the past 100,000 years this area has been populated by San hunter-gatherers (Bushmen). Some 2,000 years ago the San turned to pastoralism, acquiring livestock from Bantu-speaking people migrating southwards. This is a lovely historical route that will give you a good insight into the lives of the Tsonga people. Include this route when you visit the Kruger National park. Route Location: The Hlanganani Route is situated in the northern-most part of South Africa in the Limpopo Province (previously known as Northern Province) on the north-west border of one of Africa's finest parks, the Kruger National Park. It stretches from the Punda Maria gate along the R524 towards Louis Trichardt and then joins the R81 towards Giyani. Winding its way through the Malamulele district and the majority of the villages created when the Kruger National Park was established, the route is five hours drive from Gauteng and two hours drive from Polokwane (Pietersburg). Story behind the route name: Hlanganani is a Shangaan/Tsonga word meaning 'get together'. It was the name initially given by the communities living in the area by a committee formed with the help of the Park's Social Ecology Unit to address community safety against animals that breached the Park's fenced perimeter. When the decision to join the African Dream Project was made, this same committee became its Forum and it was agreed 'Hlanganani' was the obvious choice for the name of the Route.

Mozambique Africa PEOPLE Mozambique's major ethnic groups encompass numerous subgroups with diverse languages, dialects, cultures, and histories. Many are linked to similar ethnic groups living in neighboring countries. The north-central provinces of Zambezia and Nampula are the most populous, with about 45% of the population. The estimated 4 million Makua are the dominant group in the northern part of the countrythe Sena and Ndau are prominent in the Zambezi valley, and the Tsonga and Shangaan dominate in southern Mozambique. Despite the influence of Islamic coastal traders and European colonizers, the people of Mozambique have largely retained an indigenous culture based on small-scale agriculture. Mozambique's most highly developed art forms have been wood sculpture, for which the Makonde in northern Mozambique are particularly renowned, and dance. The middle and upper classes continue to be heavily influenced by the Portuguese colonial and linguistic heritage. During the colonial era, Christian missionaries were active in Mozambique, and many foreign clergy remain in the country.
