Northern European Shamanism: A Preliminary Reconstruction
ici . (It's got cool pictures, too! ;) Shamanism has come to be associated almost exclusively, in American popular thinking, with the aboriginal inhabitants of the Americas. This not only inaccurately reflects the extent of shamanism's practice (it is found from Australia to the Arctic) but also, sadly, contributes to a neglect by those of European descent of the shamanic practices of their own ancestors. One cause of this neglect has been the carefully fostered image of Europe as the wellspring of Western Civilization, by which tribal origins and traditional life are often glossed over. However, I was delighted to discover, when I examined ancient sources, that I did not need to borrow from other traditions; it is clear that tribal Europe had as strong a shamanic tradition as, for example, any of the American Indian tribes. It is fitting that other people, too, of European descent examine this European Shamanic tradition; it is a rightful part of our heritage so there need be no accusations of theft or exploitation, and its images and symbols ring more truly in our collective unconscious than those of other cultures. This is a survey of a few shamanic elements that occur within Western shamanic traditions, obscured as they are by time and cultural discontinuity. I will be using material from many Northern European cultures, on the assumption that each one may have retained some element that the others have lost. The similarities between them all have convinced me that there actually was, once, a unified European system, and Hilda R. Ellis Davidson, in

What is shamanism? The word shaman originated from a word in Siberia and eventually came to be applied to all medicine men and women of indigenous cultures who's practice includes the flight of the soul. Anthropologist studying indigenous cultures throughout the world, began to find that for different cultures, there were similarities in the way the medicine men and women worked with healing and connecting to the spiritual aspect of people and the world. While there were differences specific to culture, removing the the cultural reference revealed a core system of practice. The core practices are called core-Shamanism - a phrase coined by Michael Harner.

If you're going to be religious, you could do a lot worse than being a shaman. Out of all the various titles of religious authority, only the temple whore can lay claim to having more fun than the shaman, and even that's debatable. The most ancient known tradition of religious authority, shamans access the divine through ecstatic trance. This trance can be achieved through any number of means, including orgiastic sex, chanting, fasting, wild dancing and the ingestion of hallucinogenic drugs. Through one or more of these means, the shaman (often, but not always, male) leaves the confines of his physical body and travels to other, presumably higher realms. During these visionary experiences, the shaman can accomplish any number of useful tasks, such as chatting with the gods, calling down rain, performing Magic and healing the sick. Shamanic traditions date back to prehistoric times, and they can be found in virtually every culture and geographic region in the early history of humanity. The late drug guru Terence McKenna traces the roots of shamanism back to the very beginnings of human consciousness. According to McKenna (whose recreational drug use renders him either biased or especially knowledgeable, depending on your point of view), the earliest humans used hallucinogenic mushrooms to stay tuned into the divine.

CREATIVE HARMONICS is a method of creatively drawing the harmonic codes out of the universe and using them for the benefit of all beings. Harmonic codes are inherent in creation, and it is for us human beings to live within and live by them for the greater purpose of the universe.
When all three aspects of CONSCIOUSNESS, SACRED ART AND SACRED SCIENCE work together we have CREATIVE HARMONICS.
CONSCIOUSNESS is the means for Creative Harmonics to interface the spiritual and practical worlds, and SACRED ART is a way of expressing that consciousness. SACRED SCIENCE is a method of research about the phenomenal world that is symbolic of the spiritual worlds.
Rowena Pattee Kryder, M.F.A., Ph.D

She works with archetypes, symbolism, art, and sacred science, using both the right and left sides of the brain, united with the heart. This implies CREATIVITY and loving wholeness.

ZEN, THE BUDDHA AND SHAMANISM
Shamanism:
The coming warmth of the morning sun softly caresses the flower's unopened petals. As the flower expands to engulf the sun's rays, the prior night's dew slowly dissipates.
The sun gives freely, neither asking for nor expecting a return. Knowing it is neither gift nor taking, the flower blossoms without fear, gently adding it's own beauty and sense of being to it's surroundings and to those fortunate enough to pass within it's presence.
Enlightenment and Shamanism in their own way are similar...however, even for those that thus come, though the ancient bristlecone pine and the desert's saguaro cactus are great and noble entities, the pinetree's seed dropped at the saguaro's foot will not take root, nor the saguaro's seed at the pinetree's foot. Magnificent as each is, something else needs be done...

118. ON SHAMANS
Mircea Eliade, for example, begins his classic study of shamanism as follows Central to shamanism as such is a belief in spirits who can help or harm
http://www.greatdreams.com/shamans.htm
On Shamans (Compiled by Dee Finney) The most distinctive spiritual specialists among indigenous peoples are the shamans. They are called by many names, but the Siberian word "shaman" is used as a generic term by scholars for those who offer themselves as mystical intermediaries between the physical and the non-physical world for specific purposes, such as healing. According to archaeological research, shamanic methods are extremely ancient- at least twenty to thirty thousand years old. Ways of becoming a shaman and practicing shamanic arts are remarkably similar around the globe. Shamans may be helpers to society, using their skills to benefit others. (very very important). Spiritual power is neutral; its use depends on the practitioner. A shaman may thus be either a causer or healer of sickness. In either case, what Native Americans call "medicine power" does not originate in the medicine person. Black Elk explains....... "Of course it was not I who cured. It was the power from the outer world, and the visions and ceremonies had only made me like a hole through which the power could come to the two-legged. If I thought that I was doing it myself, the hole would close up and no power could come through" There are many kinds of medicine. One is the ability to heal physical, psychological and spiritual problems. Techniques used include physical approaches to illness such as therapeutic herbs, dietary recommendations, sweatbathing, massage, cauterization and sucking out of toxins. But the treatments are given to the whole person body, mind and spirit, with special emphasis on healing relationships within the group - so there may also be metaphysical divination, prayer, chanting, and ceremonies in which group power is built up and spirit helpers are called in. If an intrusion of harmful power, such as angry energy or another person, seems to be causing the problem, the medicine person may attempt to suck it out with the aid of spirit helpers, and then dry vomit the invisible intrusion into a receptacle.

120. Neo-Shamanism
shamanism is also found in the Celtic tradition. The growth of modern neoshamanism began with Mircea Eliade s classical study shamanism Archaic Techniques
http://philtar.ucsm.ac.uk/encyclopedia/europe/neosham.html
Neo-Shamanism
Doctrines As with most modern Paganism, there is no single dogma or central authority for Shamanism, and Shamanism is perhaps one of the least readily definable of the Pagan religions, being extremely diverse. The spirit world is viewed as part of everyday reality - it surrounds us and we live with spirits all the time; the Shaman has the ability to move between the worlds and thus provide a bridge, becoming a pathfinder for his people. Shamanism is an ecstatic religion, and through training or calling the Shaman is able to access the spirit worlds and work with the powers there; through this contact, the Shaman is able to work acts of healing, divination and magic, revealing human spirituality through vision, poetry and myth.
Shamans place great emphasis on personal experience, and therefore usually follow a solitary path though some work together in groups. Shamanic practice is characterised by seeking vision in solitude and is deeply rooted in the mysteries of nature.
A Shaman is one set apart, usually identified at an early age as possessing special powers of communication with the otherworld. Often they had had a spontaneous, severe and traumatic experience - an illness or spiritual crisis - which forced open for them the doors of the otherworld. The work of the Shaman is considered dangerous and, in many societies, to be chosen as a Shaman is seen as much as a curse as a blessing.
