A Brief History and Character
Of the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations From origins in the eighteenth century Stratford-upon-Avon's Shakespeare birthday celebrations have developed into a unique international occasion which annually brings together people from many countries, institutions and professions to do honour to the immortal memory of William Shakespeare. The widely publicised Shakespearean Festival of 1769, organised by the famous actor David Garrick, first established Stratford as a shrine of literary pilgrimage. It was during the nineteenth century that the idea of holding annual celebrations in honour of the poet was gradually established. The tercentenary of Shakespeare's birth in 1864 marked the next big step forward with a three week celebration held in a wooden tent on the opposite side of the river from where the theatre stands now. It was in 1879, when the original Shakespeare Memorial Theatre (the predecessor of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre) was built, that the first of the annual seasons of Shakespeare's plays was established in Stratford-upon-Avon. Since the beginning of this century the tradition of holding an important celebration on the anniversary of the Shakespeare's birth has grown in scale. The celebrations now involve representatives from the worlds of literature, theatre, academia and diplomacy; a truly international gathering joining the people of Stratford on this special weekend.

State Provides Funding for Improvements to Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford
The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has recently authorized the release of $218,000 to fund infrastructure renovations at the Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford, Connecticut. The Stratford Festival Theatre, Inc. will receive the funds to perform work on the structure including heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems; carpeting; electrical work, and fire alarm system work. The Stratford Festival Theatre, Inc. is a nonprofit organization, which purchased the theatre from the DEP in 1998. The facility was operated as a state park from 1983 to 1998. The $218,000 being provided to the Stratford Festival Theatre, Inc. is derived from the Culpepper Account, which is a fund received by the State of Connecticut with the acquisition of Shakespeare Theatre and specifically designated for improvements to the property. The DEP will administer the account expenditures and provide oversight of the work. In 1998 the Stratford Festival Theatre, Inc. took possession of the property for $1.5 million and began renovations to operate the theatre for live performances. The purchase agreement with the state stipulated that it would be used for performances, including not less than one annual performance of a play by William Shakespeare, and to once again revive the theatre into a culturally important landmark and as an entertainment center to provide regional economic benefits.

Annual Illinois Shakespeare Festival
Date: 6/28/05 Contact: Marc Lebovitz
Twenty seven actors from around the country have brought their broad range of talents to the 28th annual Illinois Shakespeare Festival this summer at the Theatre at Ewing Manor in Bloomington. Hailing from Idaho to Connecticut and from Texas to Chicago, the festival acting company includes newcomers as well as 10-year-plus veteran favorites as David Kortemeier, Roderick Peeples and Philip Earl Johnson. This is Kortemeier’s 10th festival season, Peeples has appeared on and off since 1992 and Johnson has returned many times since his ISU graduation in 1986. Johnson’s plate will be full with the title roles in “Macbeth” and the festival premiere production of “Henry VIII.” Since two enormous Shakespearean roles don’t quite fill the summer, the 1986 Illinois State alumnus also will present his traditional MooNiE the Magnif’Cent show on Aug. 1 at Ewing. He will present his one-man, children-friendly show early in the evening and the older-child to adult show with his comic partner Broon later in the evening.

Before 1576 there was no proper theater in London. The inner courtyards of inns were used to present plays. A small platform was placed over the watering troughs just outside the stables at one end of the court. The spectators either stood in the court or sat on benches on the balconies above the yard. This layout was the model for the later regular theaters.

Shakespeare in American Communities Continues with Shakespeare for a New Generation
As the lights of the theater dim, the audience settles down. The curtains rise to reveal a world of love, tragedy, and comedy. The audience is enthralled by the words of William Shakespeare and finds the play's themes are relevant to their lives today. This stage isn't located in New York or Chicago. It's the stage of a local high school in a rural town. And the audience isn't your typical dinner-and-a-show crowd. Instead, middle and high school students are experiencing live Shakespeare, some for the first time. This is the scene in many towns across America as the National Endowment for the Arts, in partnership with The Sallie Mae Fund and Arts Midwest, a regional arts organization based in Minneapolis, launches Shakespeare in American Communities Phase II: Shakespeare for a New Generation Shakespeare for a New Generation
