Shakespeare's Birthday Celebrations
Come and celebrate the Birthday of Stratford's favourite son!
Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 April 2005
Many free events across venues in Stratford-upon-Avon The weekend includes a myriad of exciting and vibrant spectacles for adults and children alike, with a hive of activity taking place on the focal point of the celebrations on Saturday 23 April. From the strolling players and circus performers entertaining the crowds to the Shakespeare Morris Men and Children’s Country Dancing, from the Band of the Royal Corps of Engineers and the Coventry Corps of Drums to the highlight of the weekend, the Procession and the unfurling of the flags and laying of floral tributes at Holy Trinity Church, it is a wonderful day of partying enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Tradition has it that William Shakespeare was born on 23rd April, three days prior to his baptism recorded at Holy Trinity Church in 1564. The 23rd April is also the date of his death in Stratford aged 52. Shakespeare’s birthday was first celebrated in 1824 with a procession through the streets to Holy Trinity Church, a dinner and a few speeches. Over the years the tradition has grown to include many of the unique features that are still integral to the celebrations today. In 1896 the American Ambassador was invited to Stratford-upon-Avon and so began the tradition that linked the celebrations with the Court of St James. To this day, the Shakespeare Birthday Celebrations remain one of the few engagements for the Diplomatic corps outside London.

About Shakespearean Theater
Before Shakespeare¹s time and during his boyhood, troupes of actors performed wherever they could in halls, courts, courtyards, and any other open spaces available. However, in 1574, when Shakespeare was ten years old, the Common Council passed a law requiring plays and theaters in London to be licensed. In 1576, actor and future Lord Chamberlain's Man, James Burbage, built the first permanent theater, called "The Theatre", outside London city walls. After this many more theaters were established, including the Globe Theatre, which was where most of Shakespeare's plays premiered. Performances took place during the day, using natural light from the open center of the theater. Since there could be no dramatic lighting and there was very little scenery or props, audiences relied on the actors' lines and stage directions to supply the time of day and year, the weather, location, and mood of the scenes. Shakespeare's plays masterfully supply this information . For example, in Hamlet the audience learns within the first twenty lines of dialogue where the scene takes place ("Have you had quiet guard?"), what time of day it is ("'Tis now strook twelf"), what the weather is like ("'Tis bitter cold"), and what mood the characters are in ("and I am sick at heart").

by eric mcafee Chicago's surprising and unparalleled enthusiasm for Shakespeare is rapidly taking on a new form. At a time when most cities are cutting back on productions of Shakespearean plays, the Windy City enjoys the unique ability to support a new theater devoted to his oeuvre. Located in the center of Navy Pier, the Chicago Shakespeare Theater will be replacing and updating the Shakespeare Repertory, founded in 1986 at the Ruth Page Theater, allowing greater flexibility for the performance of Shakespeare's plays and for additional, supplementary programs to enhance the city's love for the Bard's works. Loosely modeled after the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the 75,000-square-foot building will provide a theater with seating for 525 patrons, nearly 200 more than at the Ruth Page. In addition, the setting will offer a substantially greater appeal, according to a spokesperson for the new theater. The exterior walls are made entirely of glass, allowing patrons a magnificent view of the lakefront, while the eight million annual visitors to Navy Pier will be able to observe all the activity just as easily from the outside. This new building will be open in time for the 1999-2000 Shakespeare Repertory season, which begins October 15 with Anthony and Cleopatra, directed by founder and Artistic Director Barbara Gaines. The title roles will feature noted Chicago actors Kevin Gudahl and Lisa Dodson. It is a testament to Chicago's ability to draw large audiences to Shakespeare's plays that these two actors have collectively appeared in 33 previous Shakespeare productions with Gaines and the company. The Inaugural Season will continue with A Midsummer Night's Dream, opening January 30, 2000, directed by Joe Dowling. The third mainstage production will be All's Well That Ends Well, directed by Gaines in the spring.

Blackfriars Youth Shakespeare Theatre
Thanks for visiting the Blackfriars Youth Shakespeare Website, kindly hosted by the Rivendell Club. Our initiation into Shakespeare productions began in 1996 when, after several years of unsatisfying attempts at dramas written expressly for children, we launched into a revolutionary idea of feeding little kids the big kids stuff. It worked! The actors and actresses, aged 6-11, rose to the challenge and haven't given it up since. Presently, we are a group of seven home-schooled families who contribute not only their children, but the parents' talents as well to give a full scale outdoor production of Shakespearean comedies. We have two groups, the 6-12 year olds, who will be performing "A Midsummer Night's Dream," and the 13-18 year olds, who will perform "The Merchant of Venice. Orlando and Rosalind in "As You Like It" (2000) Holofernes in "Love's Labours Lost" (1998) Amongst the cast are some accomplished musicians, so every play is sprinkled with live music in varying amounts. In 2001, to accompany the "Tempest", a small orchestral score was added to create a lively storm scene, as well as harp music to help the fairies seemingly float through the air. The dads work together to design and build the sets, while the moms are busy either directing or making authentic Elizabethan style costumes. At the end of the day, our satisfaction lies in working together to accomplish something both entertaining and beautiful, that keeps our audiences coming back year after year.
