Collectors of toaster theme related collectibles such as salt and pepper shakers, cookie jars, and toys.
http://brightbytes.com/collection/toaster.html
Why toaster collectibles? Several years ago we got a NewTek Video Toaster board for our Amiga. We loved it and became great fans of the company and the board! In a flea market we found an old salt and pepper shaker in the shape of a toaster and bought it as a joke. We took it to a computer club meeting and told the group that we had bought another toaster. To the groans of the group we pulled out the little toaster. That was to be the end of it but...we saw a different style salt and pepper in an antique show, and never looked back. We now have over 100 toasters in the form of salt and peppers, Christmas ornaments, trays, cookie jars, refrigerator magnets, children's toys, an inflatable toaster, cards, shirts and caps. We still say we do not collect real old toasters because the ones we like are expensive and they are too large to display in a house with too many collections already. The exceptions are an old flip-type toaster that we found in Beverly's Mother's garage when we packed her to move, Jack's Dualit, the Toast-O-Lator he could not resist and a Sunbeam T9 which is the prototype of several of our cookie jars/ The real toasters are pictured on page 5. The boxed salt and pepper set above was the one that started it all. We bought it in an antique market in Pennsylvania. The box is marked "Starke Design" and the toaster "Patent Pending Made in USA". This style and variations must have been made in the millions. We see it most often while searching antique shops and markets. Several of them turn up every week on the internet auction site we frequent. If one of us spots it we will say, "Oh they only have

About the Community
Historical Background The United Society of Believers, commonly called Shakers, was founded in 1747, in Manchester, England. They were called in derision, "Shaking Quakers," because of their ecstatic and violent bodily agitation in worship. To this group of separatists came a remarkable young woman named Ann Lee (1736-1784). In 1770, she was imprisoned for her religious views. During this time she experienced a series of visions. From that date on Ann Lee was acknowledged as their leader and known as Mother Ann. In 1774, a decision was made to remove to America. Mother Ann and eight of her followers boarded The Mariah in Liverpool. They landed in New York City on August 6, and immediately set to work and found employment. Several went up river to a place outside Albany then called Niskayuna. They began to clear the land and erect buildings. In 1776, the little band of Believers began Community life together. Having arrived on the eve of the American Revolution, and being not only British, but pacifists, the Shakers kept a low profile. However, the events of May 19, 1780, the famous "Dark Day," brought their testimony to the public. Soon, hundreds of people from New York and Massachusetts were coming to see this peculiar people.

The Shakers were celibate, they did not marry or bear children, yet theirs is the most enduring religious experiment in American history. Seventy-five years before the emancipation of the slaves and one hundred fifty years before women began voting in America, the Shakers were practicing social, sexual, economic, and spiritual equality for all members.
Shakerism was founded by an illiterate English factory worker named Ann Lee. Guided by divine visions and signs, she and eight pilgrims came to America in 1774 to spread her gospel in the New World.

The Shakers - Another America, by Karl Mang
Originally published in: The Shakers Life and production of a community in the pioneering days of America - a catalog for an exhibition at the Staatliches Museum fur angewandte Kunst, Munich, 1974. On September 5th, 1774, shortly after "Mother" Ann Lee and her eight companions had landed in America, the Continental Congress convened, to which twelve of the thirteen colonies had sent delegates. A "Declaration of Rights and Grievances" addressed to the king and parliament of the mother country constituted the first step towards independence. In 1783 Ann Lee died in Watervliet (formerly Niskeyuna); the same year saw the signature of the peace treaty with the thirteen colonies. With this, the king of England recognized these thirteen "United States" as "free, independent and sovereign". In the eight years which lay in between, the Shakers (coming from New York as settlers) had cleared land in the wilderness in the neighborhood of Albany and founded their first settlement in Niskeyuna. During a two-year preaching tour of New England, Ann Lee had won the first American followers of her faith. At the same time the Americans gained their independence. At the time when the Shakers were inspired to emigrate to that country, England, after the events of the 18th century, could indeed no longer be compared with the autocratic states of continental Europe. Yet Ann Lee still had to suffer imprisonment, oppression and distress, for the freedom to preach and make converts was limited.

Shakers and Shakerism
A Guide to the Collections
of The New York Public Library
The Research Libraries of The New York Public Library collect extensively on Shakers and Shakerism, a religious movement formally known as the United Society of Believers in Christ's Second Coming. This Christian body has received considerable scholarly and popular attention. Although initially related to elements of Quakerism, the Shakers developed an idiosyncratic religious expression which included communal living, productive labor, celibacy, and a ritual noted for its dancing and shaking. While the eclectic nature of Shaker theology has been the focus of scholarly attention, the distinctive craftsmanship and folk art of Shaker lifethe results of an avowed commitment to a life of perfectionhave attracted popular interest. A significant aspect of Shakerism is its founding by a woman, Mother Ann Lee, who was regarded by her followers as the second incarnation of Christ. Although the movement began in England under Ann Lee in 1758, the small body of believers removed itself to America under her leadership in 1774. Shakerism's unique role in American social and cultural history has manifested itself in a significant literature, by members and outsiders alike, much of which has been collected by the Research Libraries.
