Response from readers has been phenomenal. If you visit some of the major bookstores on-line, you'll find an awful lot of praise for my books. Check out the reader reviews at Amazon.Com or the ongoing chat in the Barnes and Noble online discussion area if you care to. I don't pretend to understand what the fuss is all about but a reader who recently read an article I wrote for PC Magazine on CORBA/IIOP and distributed computing summed it up pretty well by saying "Reading your article was an eye-opening experience. You managed to introduce the whole of [distributed computing] in lucid detail. I've attempted to read entire books on the subject and this same material would have filled several chapters yet you did what they couldn't with only a few pages. You've got a new fan." My only hope is that readers continue to enjoy my work and let me know from time to time how my books and articles help them get ahead. If you are looking for a computer book, I hope you'll check out the books listed below. Learn the Internet In A Weekend

A Look at XML
by Adam Rifkin First published January 27, 1999
HTML is the HyperText Markup Language standardized by for storing and exchanging documents on the World Wide Web. HTML was designed to be simple enough to support ease of authoring Web pages, rich enough to support multimedia embedding in documents, and flexible enough to support hypertext linking. HTML is based on SGML , the Standard Generalized Markup Language standardized by ISO for defining and using portable document formats. SGML was designed to be formal enough to allow proofs of document validity, structured enough to handle complex documents, and extensible enough to support management of large information repositories.

    SGML and the Web
For those who have encoded their text in SGML the Web remains an economical outputmedium. New York was our first opportunityto see Agave, which marries SGML to relational databases. We also looked at new versions of two different, and established, display options: DynaWeb and Panorama.
    Agave links SGML and SQL
Agave provides solutions to link documents and legacy databases. Key to its offering are the SQml extensions to SGML. Adding a few lines to the dtd enables the parsing of sql statements and outputs the results fully formatted to the finished pages. An example of using SQml to embed SQL code in an HTML page.
Agave's SQml-CGI is a server-based application based on Common Gateway Interface scripts. Since it is SGML compliant, it is fairly straightforward to include links to sql and odbc databases in existing HTML or SGML documents. The application parser intercepts a Post or Get operator and forwards the query request to the database server. The database server can be external to the document server, but they must reside on the same network. The database returns the information to the application, which inserts the appropriate formatting codes from the original script for viewing in a standard Web browser. It's possible to create complex data relationships by nesting queries. It's also possible to combine SQml queries and JavaScript to create graphics and animation and other interactive elements.

    Content management: Killer app?
Publishing has become the proving ground for technology with very broad appeal. Content management will be critical for all large businesses, not just those with big manuals or large publication archives. The economics and response times of online delivery are so compelling that a whole new technology base is rising up to bring content-driven service to the mainstream. Content management will be critical for all large businesses, not just those with big manuals or large archives of published material. As Bill Gates noted under questioning by Jonathan Seybold at the conference, mainstream software suppliers, such as Microsoft, have recognized that publishing has become the proving ground for rolling out technology that will have very broad appeal. Before long, the technology and process changes will spread to midsize and smaller businesses. The value that content management will bring to businesses of all types will fuel development of base technology that publishers will be able to take advantage of in creating electronic publications. It will take time, but the more significant change will be that in the years ahead, publishers will see their

    Abstract
Scholarly publishing has traditionally taken place using the medium of print. This paper will discuss the transition to electronic scholarly publishing and how the fluid nature of the Web introduces special problems. These problems include document linking, document invariance, document durability, and changing standards.
    Keywords
Electronic publishing; scholarly publishing; SGML; HTML; URL; URN; durability; fixity; standards.
    Note on Citations
As the citations need to be accessible on the Web and in print, the following procedure has been followed. All bibliographic citations in the text are hyper-linked to an anchor in the reference list at the end of this paper. This allows the reader easily to check the detail of the citation and determine if they wish to access it. Cited works for which there exists a URL can then be accessed by clicking on the text of the URL itself, which will be given in full after the citation information. Selecting Go back will, in most Web browsers, return to the original location in the main text.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. If Web authoring sounds too difficult to try, don't be dissuaded. Attendees won't need PhDs in HTML to do it. You can start with templates in souped-up versions of your favorite word processors. Or you can use those word processors to cannibalize pages you like. So surf for a while, mark the pages you like and save the source files. (This will all make sense once you sit down and try it out. If you'd like a gentler introduction, get a tour in the Sedona room first.) Quarterdeck and WordPerfect will demonstrate their Web authoring tools in this room. The move to enhance word processing tools to deal with publishing on the Web is natural and powerful. One can publish to paper or fax for audiences that often number only one, to e-mail (with carbon copies) for slightly larger audiences, or to the Web, where vastly larger audiences can see it. Microsoft has also taken this tack with its Internet Assistant, a free Word add-on package that offers Web authoring (currently, available for downloading, in beta release).

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. has anybody actually seen XML on-screen? Not just snippets of code, but XML in rich fonts and page layouts, perhaps rendered in living color? Such XML sightings are as rare as alien abductions everywhere but the X-Files. Yet XML (Extensible Markup Language) is all the rage, both as a data interchange standard and as a successor to HTML for Web publishing. In 1998, XML saw as much action as an interchange standard as it did serving its original purpose: a flexible Web-publishing alternative to HTML. The reason? The year-old XML standard, like its venerable SGML standard antecedent, intentionally omits guidelines for document presentation. XML's presentational aspects are defined in Extensible Style Language (XSL), a new standard whose long gestation left XML relegated to data interchange. Nonetheless, XSL will be released sometime in 1999 and soon thereafter we will actually be able to view XML documents. And these documents will reside on the Web, LANs, local drives, and CD-ROM. Regardless of publishing medium, you will be able to publish a document's content once and deliver various renditions by supplying different XSL files with the content.

Questions and Answers about the HDL Proposal
This document is a companion piece to the proposal for a Hypertext Delivery Language (HDL) to be developed upon an existing standard, SDL. It poses and answers some of the more basic questions relating to HDL and its relationship to other delivery methods.
What would be the relationship between HDL and authoring languages?
Like SDL, the HDL contemplated by the proposal is not intended to be an authoring format but rather the target of a conversion process from some other format optimized for authoring or data retrieval. The most obvious source format for HDL would be HTML, presumably HTML 3.0, which is here assumed to be a refinement of the existing HTML 2.0 without the addition of typographical controls. A conversion script to produce HDL from HTML is obviously a prerequisite to this plan, but such a script would be relatively easy to develop. It may be wondered what advantages a conversion process would have over the implementation of format controls directly in HTML. There are several aspects to this question. First, it is necessary to distinguish between the need to control the typography of documents in order to produce a distinctive appearance and the need to adopt a completely different appearance for each document. The former is quite common; the latter is quite rare (except in advertising). Typically, individual users and organizations seek to develop a distinctive look for their documents and demand the controls necessary to achieve the visual effect required to distinguish their documents from those produced by others. Once having achieved such an effect, however, this distinctive look becomes associated with individual or corporate identity and is seldom changed. It is often necessary to develop a suite of styles for different subdocument types the different sections of a newspaper or magazine, for example but once developed, such styles change infrequently.

    80. Four Myths About XML (Bosak)
The key factor to understand about XML is that it belongs to the sgml layer, is busy defining this enabling language for XMLbased web publishing.

    Four Myths about XML
    Jon Bosak
    Sun Microsystems
This article first appeared in IEEE Computer (Vol. 31, No. 10, October 1998, pp. 120-122). Called "the emerging technology of the year" after it was endorsed by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), XML burst onto the scene in February, 1998. It was called the successor to HTML and, according to some, the future lingua franca for the exchange of structured data. As XML emerged from the obscurity of its W3C beginnings, it was perhaps inevitable that this new data format would begin generating misconceptions as fast as it has attracted enthusiasts. In this column, I'd like to head off some myths about XML before they become permanent misunderstandings.
MYTH 1: XML IS A CONSIPIRACY LED BY MICROSOFT
XML is a conspiracy, but not Microsoft's. In fact, XML was produced by a group of markup language experts organized by Sun Microsystems to develop a form of the venerable ISO standard, SGML, for use on the Web. The amazing thing about XML is that all of these people and organizations set aside personal and corporate agendas to cooperate in the construction of a genuinely open standard, driven entirely by user needs. These needs include:
