Geography Lying 1593 km East of Kenya, 2813 km South West of India and 925 km North East of Madagascar makes this archipelago strategically located. It consists of 115 islands, of which 76 are coralline and the remaining are granitic. The main part of the archipelago is situated between 4 and 5 degrees South of the equator at a longitude between 55 and 56 degrees east, allowing it to enjoy a favorable climate. But Seychelles is also lucky to be situated in a zone free from cyclones. All the main islands are granitic and Mahe is the principal island (153 skm with 80% of the total population). The estimated population is 80,000 in 1998. The coralline islands are low averaging 1.5 meters above sea level and seldom exceed 9 to 15 meters in height Supplies of fresh water are scarce and settlements are small with rarely more than a hundred people. Many of these islands serve as rookeries for large bird population. In contrast the granitic islands rise from the sea to altitudes of 600 to 1000m. The topography is rugged with outcrops ofhuge boulders. Fresh water is provided by surface streams.

Situated just 4 degrees south of the equator and a thousand miles off the East coast of Africa, the Seychelles are a group of some 115 islands scattered across over 500,000 square miles of ocean. Even though they are so close to the Equator they have a surprisingly mild and sub- tropical climate which is moderated by the oceanic influences and trade winds. The Inner Islands The Amirantes are a group of coral islands and sand-bars to the South West of the Inner island group; strictly speaking they comprise the Amirantes group to the north and the Alphonse group to the south. These islands are true "coral islands" and are the coral crowns of submerged mountains; the underwater terrain is very different to the inner islands with coral walls and steep drop-offs to several thousand metres in depth. This area is on the outer fringe of the cyclone belt and is accessible at only limited times of the year, September to May and tends to have a much drier climate that the Inner Islands. There has been very limited tourist infrastructure developed in this area with Lodges on Desroches and Alphonse only. To the South and South West of the Amirantes, now some 10 degrees South of the Equator, are the Southern Islands, which comprise the

    http://www.misd.gov.sc/sdas/Census_Geography.htm
Geography of Seychelles The republic of Seychelles consists of 116 islands scattered over 1,000,000 sq. km. of sea in the middle of the Western Indian Ocean. The group comprises of 43 granitic islands with a land area of 245 sq. km., the largest and most populated of which is Mahé, and more than 73 coralline islands with a land area of 210 sq. km. The total area is 455 sq. km. The granitic islands that form the main group are scattered around Mahé and all lie within a 56 km radius. The islands are of rugged formation and great scenic beauty, some seemingly rising straight out of the sea to great heights, but because of their mountainous nature, there is little flat land. Mahé is the most important island and lies between 4 and 5 degrees south of the equator, and between 55 and 56 degrees East runs down the whole length, most of which is over 300 m high, rising to the peak of Morne Seychellois at 905 m. Mahé is about 1600 km north of west Mauritius, 925 km north east of Mombassa. The capital is Victoria, which came into being because it possesses an excellent harbour sheltered by a small group of islands offshore. The international airport of the republic is on Mahé and it is capable of handling the largest passenger aircraft. Two other islands of major importance as regards size and permanent population are Praslin and La Digue. These two islands are about 8 km apart and lie about 40 km from Mahé to the Northeast. a third, Silhouette, is slightly larger than La Digue but is also the most mountainous island of the group and for this reason its population is small.

Geography. The Seychelles form a widely scattered archipelago of over 100 islands,in the Indian Ocean Northeast of Madagascar.
    http://www.stgt.com/seychelles/html/geography.htm
Geography of the Seychelles Geography The Seychelles form a widely scattered archipelago of over 100 islands, in the Indian Ocean Northeast of Madagascar. The islands fall in two main physical types. The islands of the central group, including the main island Mahe, are formed from granite, and consist of a mountainous heart surrounded by a flat coastal strip. The outer islands are made up of coral accretions at various stages of formation, from reefs to atolls. These are generally smaller and almost entirely flat, lying only a few meters above sea level. Most of these islands have no water, and only a few are inhabited. The main islands enjoy high humidity and rainfall, feeding the lush tropical rain forest. Wildlife includes a rare giant land turtle and colourful reef animals such as the Green Sea Turtle. The islands have in the past suffered from human incursions, but are now strictly preserved and maintained. The islands are valued greatly for their unique forests and wildlife, some of which is only to be found within these islands. Society Occupying a strategic position on the Europe-India sea route, the Seychelles were annexed by France in 1756 to support its colony on Mauritius. It passed to Britain after the Napoleon Wars. Most of the people are of mixed racial descent, and speak the Creole dialect. The Seychelles became independent in 1976 with James R. Mancham as president and Albert Rene as prime minister. In 1979 Albert Rene also took over the presidency, and has instituted a multiparty system. He has been re-elected several times, and has remained in office since 1979.

    Background:
Some say that the uninhabited islands of Seychelles were sighted by Vasco de Gama in 1502, however recorded landings did not occur until 1609. In 1756 the French made a formal claim to the islands.
Settlement began in 1778 under a French military administration but barely survived its first decade.
A lengthy struggle between France and Great Britain for the islands ended in 1814, when they were ceded to the latter. Seychelles and Mauritius were given to England by the Treaty of Paris in 1814. During the 19th century, chinese and indian tradesmen, together with former slaves settled in the island. They founded their own colony seperated from the Crown in 1903.
