Forming a backdrop to the relaxed tropical image of the Seychelles are the rhythms, colours and flavours of Africa and gris gris, the local brand of black magic. If you're looking for that unspoilt tropical paradise thousands of miles from anywhere, the Seychelles fits the bill. Aside from palm-fringed beaches and superb snorkelling and diving, there's also plenty of forested wilderness filled with an abundance of wildlife. But paradise comes at a price - there's very little in the way of budget accommodation here, and taking a dive with the fishes will set you back a pretty penny. Heeding the Creole Voice (in the Seychelles Islands): Alternatives to race and nation as identifiers of cultural value
Author: Michael L. Naylor
Published: March 2005 Abstract (E): When centuries of labeling or categorizing of cultures and their expressions (music inclusive) by designations of racial or national origin fail to describe the true nature or benefit of the cultures, it becomes essential to look into alternative paradigms and describers to re-define human perception.
"Heeding the Creole Voice . . ." is an attempt to decode both the origins of some of our greater barriers to flexible and multi-cultural perception, while suggesting a variety of alternatives in methodology which are gleaned from numerous visits with musicians and culture-bearers from the Seychelles islands.
The article is also centered on the use of the voices of the cultures and upon suggesting some alternative mindsets which might assist in liberating Western academicians in their search for accuracy and balance in culture studies. Abstract (F): keywords: Seychelles, multiculturalism, orality, perception

History
Main article: History of Seychelles While Arab traders were probably the first to visit the uninhabited Seychelles, the first recorded sighting of them took place in , by the Portuguese . As a transit point for trading between Africa and Asia , they were occasionally used by pirates until the French began to take control of the islands starting in , naming them after Jean Moreau de Sechelles , the then French finance minister.

Introduction
The Seychelles Islands are the highest point of the Mascarene Ridge, an Indian Ocean ridge running in a generally north-south direction.
The coralline Seychelles are, in contrast, low-lying, rising only a few feet above the surface of the sea. Many have the typical Indian Ocean lagoon. Soils tend to be thin with poor moisture retention. These island are suited only to coconut palm and a few other species. For a small country, there are several very well known painters residing there. Perhaps the best of these is Michael Adams who has a studio and gallery on the southwest coast of Mahe. The Daily Telegraph said "Adams catches the spirit of the islands, his brilliantly colored silk-screens prints throb with life, pattern, activity and fun. Every surface is worked over again and again with animals, people, rampant vegetation and crisp white buildings..." The silkscreen shown here is "Anse Royale," presented courtesy of Mango's Fine Art Gallery in Barbados which exhibits a retrospective of Michael's works. Other artists are Leon Radegonde, Gerard Devoud and Marc Duc. Museums
In Victoria you'll find the National Museum on Independence Avenue, the History Museum on State House Avenue and both the National Library and National Archives are on Francis Rachel Street. The National Museum exhibits local cultural and natural history along with artifacts including ship wreckage, coral, voodoo implements, stuffed tortoises, old musical instruments and household objects and various possessions of the pirates who once roamed the waters.

of Seychelles
Background:
Some say that the uninhabited islands of Seychelles were sighted by Vasco de Gama in 1502, however recorded landings did not occur until 1609. In 1756 the French made a formal claim to the islands.
Settlement began in 1778 under a French military administration but barely survived its first decade.
A lengthy struggle between France and Great Britain for the islands ended in 1814, when they were ceded to the latter. Seychelles and Mauritius were given to England by the Treaty of Paris in 1814. During the 19th century, chinese and indian tradesmen, together with former slaves settled in the island. They founded their own colony seperated from the Crown in 1903.
