But however seductive the images, they simply can’t compete with the real-life dazzling beaches and crystal-clear waters. There are more shades of blue and green in the Seychelles than it is possible to imagine. Forming a backdrop to the relaxed tropical image of the Seychelles are the rhythms, colours and flavours of Africa and gris gris , the local brand of black magic.

Country Info Seychelles Introduction Seychelles General Data Seychelles Maps Seychelles Culture ... Seychelles Time and Date Seychelles Education Back to Top Until the mid-1800s, little formal education was available in Seychelles. Both the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches opened mission schools in 1851. The missions continued to operate the schoolsthe teachers were monks and nuns from abroadeven after the government became responsible for them in 1944. After a technical college opened in 1970, a supply of locally trained teachers became available, and many new schools were accomplished. Since 1981 a system of free education has been in effect requiring attendance by all children in grades one to nine, beginning at age five.90% of all children also attend nursery school at age 4.The literacy rate for school-aged children had risen to more than 90% by the late 1980s. Many older Seychellois had not been taught to read or write in their childhood, but adult education classes helped raise adult literacy from 60% to a claimed 85% in 1991. Seychelles has received funds for developing its educational programs from several multinational sources. These include a grant from the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in 1988 and a US$9.4 million loan from the African Development Bank in November 1991.

CULTURE Art
For a small country, there are several very well known painters residing there. Perhaps the best of these is Michael Adams who has a studio and gallery on the southwest coast of Mahe. The Daily Telegraph said "Adams catches the spirit of the islands, his brilliantly colored silk-screens prints throb with life, pattern, activity and fun. Every surface is worked over again and again with animals, people, rampant vegetation and crisp white buildings..." The silkscreen shown here is "Anse Royale," presented courtesy of Mango's Fine Art Gallery in Barbados which exhibits a retrospective of Michael's works. Other artists are Leon Radegonde, Gerard Devoud and Marc Duc. Museums
In Victoria you'll find the National Museum on Independence Avenue, the History Museum on State House Avenue and both the National Library and National Archives are on Francis Rachel Street. The National Museum exhibits local cultural and natural history along with artifacts including ship wreckage, coral, voodoo implements, stuffed tortoises, old musical instruments and household objects and various possessions of the pirates who once roamed the waters.

In a place where you can cast a net and come up with “dinner” and climb a tree to pick a snack, the culinary arts have evolved to produce flavors pleasing to both basic and sophisticated tastes. The extraordinarily unique island Creole style merges French, African, Chinese, Indian and English heritages. Blending spices and curries, with locally abundant coconut milk and breadfruit, and varieties of flavorful seafood, the Seychellois have refined meal preparation to a celebration of the best their islands can offer. Fish is plentiful, varieties are abundant and it is always an excellent menu selection. Typical fish delicacies include succulent red snapper ("bourzwa"), tuna steaks unlike any elsewhere, kingfish and, if you're lucky enough to find it, fillets of parrot fish with the most tender of meats. Smoked sailfish is a common appetizer; the wafer thin slices make up a refreshing salad and is a tropical version of smoked salmon.

There is no indigenous culture in the Seychelles as such, but aspects of African origin have survived. The government has formed the National School of Music and the National Cultural Troupe to foster a cultural identity and tradition. You'll glimpse aspects of it by eating the delicious, seafood-heavy cuisine, dancing the moutia or seeking out a love potion. Seychellois music is a blend of Indian, European, Chinese and Arabic - accordions, banjos and violins blend with the makalapo, a stringed instrument, the zez, a sitar, African skin drums and the bom, a bowed instrument. The sombre moutia is the typical dance of the Seychelles, with strong African and Malagasy rhythms. The songs are prayers which the slaves turned into work chants, and they're accompanied by slow, repetitive dance routines. The moutia is one of those participatory affairs, where everyone has to get up and join in.
