CLICK HERE TO ENTER SITE Silent Voices believes that God is the Author of life, that all human life is valuable - born and preborn - and that abortion is never the answer to an unplanned, "crisis" pregnancy. We are dedicated to giving compassionate, practical assistance to women experiencing unplanned pregnancies, providing accurate information about the realities and possible consequences of abortion, and offering help, hope and healing through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ to women already struggling with the trauma of abortion. In keeping with this belief, Silent Voices does not make referrals to known abortion providers. What are STDs?
STD stands for S exually T ransmitted D different STDs and HIV and AIDS
Most of the symptoms of STDs can be found either on the genitals or in and around the mouth. Our STD pages will give you more information about symptoms.
Who can I talk to?
It may help you to talk to an adult - perhaps a parent, school nurse or teacher may be able to advise you where you can have a test. Or you could ask your family doctor. There are details of helplines and testing centres on our help and advice
Will they tell my parents? Most (but not all) clinics have a confidentiality policy, and will not tell anyone, although some places will want you to bring a parent to give consent. You can phone the clinic before you go and find out.
What will they do?
If you think that you may already have passed on the infection to someone else, it is important that you tell them so that they can have a test, too. If the clinic gives you antibiotics or medication, make sure that you follow the instructions and complete the course of treatment - otherwise the STD may come back.
So how can I protect myself?

Sexually transmitted diseases, to include chlamydia and gonorrhea, are serious, sometimes painful and can cause a lot of damage. Some STD's infect only your sexual and reproductive organs, others can cause general body infections. A few STD's cannot be cured. But most can be cured if you get treated. STD's are spread during close, sexual activity including vaginal, anal and oral sex. Some STD's are also spread by contact with infected blood. Most STD germs need to live in warm, moist areas. That's why they infect the mouth, rectum and sex organs. (Source: Douglas County Health Department) STD HOTLINE: 1-800-782-2437

Rick Sowadsky, MSPH What Do the Symptoms of Sexually Transmitted Diseases Look Like? By Rick Sowadsky, MSPH, Senior Communicable Disease Specialist, Nevada State Health Division December 1997 The following are the some of the symptoms of syphilis, gonorrhea, chlamydia, genital warts, scabies, and herpes. Since symptoms can vary from person to person, and since these symptoms can resemble the symptoms of many other illnesses, you CANNOT diagnose a sexually transmitted disease (STD) based on these pictures! These pictures are to be used as a general guide only! Remember, ONLY a doctor can diagnose an STD.
WARNING: These pictures are very graphic.
    SYPHILIS
To find out if you have syphilis the doctor must do a blood test. Syphilis is easily treated with penicillin. However, left untreated, syphilis is a deadly disease, and can kill a person years after infection. The first sign of syphilis is often a sore that doesn't hurt and goes away even if you don't take any medicine. This sore is called a chancre. It usually appears on the penis, vagina, or rectum. Syphilis is most easily spread when someone has a chancre. There is usually only one chancre, but sometimes there are more. The chancre is usually round. It often looks like several layers of skin are missing. Women who don't get treated for syphilis can give it to their unborn babies. Often these babies are born dead or have brain damage!

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Among American Youth: Incidence and Prevalence Estimates, 2000
By Hillard Weinstock, Stuart Berman and Willard Cates, Jr. CONTEXT: In the United States, young people aged 15-24 represent 25% of the sexually experienced population. However, the incidence and prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) among this age-group are unknown. METHODS: Data from a variety of sources were used to estimate the incidence and prevalence of STDs among 15-24-year-olds in the United States in 2000. The quality and reliability of the estimates were categorized as good, fair or poor, depending on the quality of the data source. RESULTS: Approximately 18.9 million new cases of STD occurred in 2000, of which 9.1 million (48%) were among persons aged 15-24. Three STDs (human papillomavirus, trichomoniasis and chlamydia) accounted for 88% of all new cases of STD among 15-24-year-olds. CONCLUSIONS: These estimates emphasize the toll that STDs have on American youth. More representative data are needed to help monitor efforts at lowering the burden of these infections.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases Hamper Development Efforts
Improving the health conditions of individuals and families in the developing world has long been a priority for American humanitarian aid. As a result of 30 years of U.S. assistance, maternal and infant death rates have dropped in many regions, significantly more couples are using contraceptives to plan their families and more children are living past their fifth birthday. Nevertheless, despite the tremendous progress brought about by investments in maternity care, family planning, child immunization and better nutrition, one crucial element of maternal and child health has been sorely neglected: the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Historically, STDs have also been overlooked in the global fight against infectious diseases; as a result, they continue to drain the lives of young and old throughout the developing world. STDs are a serious problem not only because they are widespread, but also because they may have delayed, long-term consequences, including poor maternal health, ectopic pregnancy, infant illness and death, cervical cancer, infertility and increased susceptibility to HIV. Millions of men and women suffering these and other effects of STDs are hindered in their ability to provide for their families and contribute to their society. For countries struggling to develop economically, the health and economic costs are immense.
