The Sewing Machine
Scissors You need two good pairs of scissors one for cutting your patterns out and one for fabric. Never use your dressmaking scissors on paper, as you will blunt them. A good mid range price pair of dressmaking scissors are Fisskars soft touch dressmaking scissors. The handles are slightly different from normal scissors but have the added advantage of the ability to be used by left and right-handed beings. Patterns Paper patterns can be expensive but check out markets and charity shops. Where you will get end of ranges or patterns no one has used. Most pattern companies have promotions every so often where their patterns will be cheaper @ 25% or 50% off. Phone around to see. The pattern magazines like Vogue and Butterick often have offers to buy one pattern get one free If you are in no hurry to make an item make a note of the pattern you like and wait for it to be on offer.

Unitarian Universalist Trauma Response Ministry
Unitarian Universalist Trauma Response Ministry (UUTRM) began in the aftermath of the attacks of September 11th when it was recognized that the UUA needed a body to help facilitate response to such disasters and traumas in congregations, and in the community at large. In this workshop, Susan Suchocki Brown, President of UUTRM, and Danita Noland, Board Member, helped ministers understand how it is they can respond to crises and disasters, and how to know when the ministers themselves need to reach out to others. A crisis, Suchocki Brown said, is a person's acute response to an event where their normal way of operating is disrupted, and when they are experiencing a significant degree of distress or functional impairment. A disaster is a sudden mishap, great ruinous event, distressing calamity, or overwhelming event or events that test the way an individual or community responds. When in crisis, after a disaster, people lose their ability to cope, and find even the most ordinary tasks difficult. Trauma is the overarching term that includes both crises and disasters. Suchocki Brown pointed out that crises are individually determined events-what is overwhelming for one person may not be for another, based on their life experience and familiarity with the situation.

Tie One On Angry Chicken is starting a monthly, themed apron sew-along called "Tie One On." The first theme is Home on the Range. I've never sewed an apron before, though I have some patterns in the ol' archives. Then in a thrift store today I happened upon the baddest-ass Western-themed fabric you will ever see. I won't reveal it yet, but know that it came in the form of 70s kids' curtains that were starched all to hell, and it involves licensed cartoon characters. So the cosmos are telling me to participate. I think I will use this pattern, which is view E from McCall's in-print pattern 3979 Here are the rest of its variations: I also have McCall's 3440, which appears to be out of print: But they do have a newer retro apron pattern, , which seems perfect for the Tie One On ethos: And lest you think I'm a whore for McCall's, here are some more interesting in-print apron patterns.
