General Quilting Instructions
For the Beginner
Read all directions carefully. Steps are given for several piecing and appliqué techniques. Refer to the sections which apply to your chosen project. Pre-wash all fabrics and iron. Do not use fabric softener, as it will make your fabrics limp and harder to work with. Fabric starch can be used to make the fabric easier to work with.
Cutting Shapes for Piecework
Pattern templates are prepared by tracing all shapes needed for piecework on template plastic or other stiff material. Accuracy is very important. Templates are traced without the 1/4" seam allowance for traditional hand piecing and with the seam allowance included for the machine piecing approach. When using a template, lines will be marked on to the wrong side of the fabric. The template is then removed and you will cut according to your chosen piecing method. For hand piecing you will be marking your SEWING lines on the fabric, and will cut 1/4" AWAY from these lines. For machine piecing your shapes will already include the seam allowance, and you will be marking your cutting lines. Cut directly on the lines drawn. "Template-Free" cutting is done by trimming out your required shapes, with an exact 1/4" seam allowance included, using rotary cutting tools. In many cases strips of fabric will be cut, from selvage edge to selvage edge, at a determined width and then "crosscut" into rectangles, squares and triangles. Fold fabric in half, matching salvage edges, for easier cutting. With this approach, you will not need to cut a template for most shapes. Lines may then be added 1/4" IN from the cut edge for hand piecing.

    Preventive Sewing-Machine Maintenance
Most sewing machine problems can be traced to poor general maintenance or neglect. To keep your machine in tiptop shape requires only a few simple supplies and a few minutes of attention daily, weekly, or monthly depending on how much you sew. by Sally Hickerson Cleaning and caring for your sewing machine requires only a few simple tools available from your machine dealer or fabric store: a small lint brush, a can of ozone-friendly compressed air, a clean piece of muslin, sewing-machine oil, and a dust cover. Most sewing machine problems that I encounter can be traced to poor general maintenance or neglect. But with some simple tools (shown in the photo right) and just a few minutes daily, weekly, or monthly depending on how much you're sewing you can help keep your machine running smoothly. Here are my guidelines for care that should keep you and your machine happy and out of the repair shop. Keep it covered Dust, lint, grit, and animal hair can find their way into your machine and cause all sorts of problems, especially for the printed circuit board of a computerized machine. So try not to place it near an open window, and always cover it when not in use. You can purchase a ready-made plastic cover from a notions or machine dealer, make one yourself, or even use an old pillow casebut keep your machine under wraps when you're not sewing

    Sewing machine
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
A modern machine (Singer Symphonie 300) A sewing machine is a mechanical (or electromechanical) device that joins fabric using thread. Sewing machines make a stitch, called a sewing-machine stitch , usually using two threads although machines exist that stitch using one, three, four or more threads. Sewing machines can make a great variety of plain or patterned stitches. They include means for gripping, supporting, and conveying the fabric past the sewing needle to form the stitch pattern. Most home sewing machines, as with many industrial machines, use a two thread stitch called the lockstitch . Some older machine types are chain stitch machines and sergers The fabric shifting mechanism may be a simple workguide or may be pattern-controlled (e.g., jacquard type). Some machines can create embroidery-type stitches. Some have a work holder frame. Some have a workfeeder that can move along a curved path, while others have a workfeeder with a work clamp. edit

    Reading a Sewing Pattern
Adapted From: Sewing For Dummies, 2nd Edition Even though a sewing pattern might be labeled "easy" or "quick," the pattern instruction writers sometimes assume that you have a certain amount of general sewing knowledge. Nothing can be more intimidating than trying to figure out what all the hieroglyphics are on the various parts of a pattern. Don't have a pattern panic attack! Take a look at each of the standard pattern parts one at a time, and you'll be shopping for patterns like a pro in no time.
Reading the front of the pattern envelope
On the front of the pattern envelope, you often see several style variations of the same project. In the world of sewing, these style variations are called views . One view may have a collar, long sleeves, and cuffs. Another view may have a V-neck and short sleeves. In home decor patterns, you may have several views in one pattern for a basic window treatment. Another pattern may have several pillow views. A third has several options for slipcovers. Views simply give you style options on creating the same basic project.
Reading the back of the pattern envelope
The back of a pattern envelope contains the following information about your project:
    • The back of the project in detail: The front of the pattern usually just shows the front of your project.

Even ultramodernized plants by themselves offer no guarantee for continuing competitiveness, unless the necessary production costs are thoroughly anaylzed, evaluated and reduced to an absolute minimum. For this reason, we are convinced that you will be interested in a computer program that is already in use in over 700 clothing production plants in 32 countries all over the world. This program, known world over as G.S.D. , allows you to analyze and plan every single operation in the sewing of a garment, whether it be a machine or a manual operation. It permits you to cost your productsts, with a high level of accuracy, prior to the start of the production process. Auxiliary modules facilitate the evaluation of the cutting room as well as production planning, ticket printing and operator training.
