If you were to take the outer casing off, you would see a mass of gears , cams, cranks and belts, all driven by a single electric motor . The exact configuration of these elements varies a good deal from machine to machine, but they all work on a similar idea. The diagram below shows a fairly standard lock-stitch design. In this diagram, the electric motor is connected to a drive wheel by way of a drive belt. The drive wheel rotates the long

How Sewing Machines Work
by Tom Harris Table of Contents Introduction to How Sewing Machines Work Sew What? Lock and Chain The General Assembly Computer Crafts Lots More Information Compare Prices for Sewing Machines A standard electric sewing machine is an amazing piece of technology. Without the sewing machine, the world would be a very different place. Like the automobile, the cotton gin and countless other innovations from the past 300 years, the sewing machine takes something time-consuming and laborious and makes it fast and easy. With the invention of the mechanized sewing machine, manufacturers could suddenly produce piles of high-quality clothing at minimal expense. Because of this technology, the vast majority of people in the world can now afford the sort of sturdy, finely-stitched clothes that were a luxury only 200 years ago. In this article, we'll take look at the remarkable machine that makes all of this possible. As it turns out, the automated stitching mechanism at the heart of a sewing machine is incredibly simple, though the machinery that drives it is fairly elaborate, relying on an assembly of gears, pulleys and motors to function properly. When you get down to it, the sewing machine is among the most elegant and ingenious tools ever created.

    Preshrinking the fabric
When you buy your fabric, ask how much it will shrink when washed. In all cases, when the fabric is washable and when you are not sure that the fabric won't shrink, it is safe to wash and iron it before cutting. Don't forget to preshrink lining as well. HINT : If you do not want to preshrink the fabric you can check the amount the fabric shrinks horizontally and vertically by wetting and ironing a small piece of it and resize your patterns accordingly using the PatternMaker editing tools. WHERE DO I BEGIN?
When it comes to sewing, the adage "A place for everything and everything in its place" is certainly true. Setting up and putting away every time you want to sew uses precious time that could be better spent sewing a new dress, blouse or jacket.
The type of sewing center you design depends on the amount of sewing you do. A person who only has short blocks of time to sew needs a place where things can be left out until a project is completed. Someone who does small sewing jobs every once in a while needs a place where things can be stored and taken out easily. A professional seamstress would need a more organized, quiet place with space for business records, as well as space to store equipment, notions, fabrics, finished garments and other related supplies. Also consider when the sewing will be done. If you dove-tail sewing with meal preparation or supervising children at play, a sewing center near the kitchen may be desirable. A spot in or near the family room may be your choice if you sew in the evening. A sewing center in the laundry lets you handle quick mending chores before clothes are laundered. Equipment for pressing darts, hems and other parts of garments is usually available and will save you steps.
