Underwire and Bra FAQs (rec.crafts.textiles.sewing)
Some words appear to be needed on just what these FAQs are for and about. It used to be obvious to people, but of late I've been getting obnoxious email in response to the FAQs. Note also, that I rarely answer paper mail, I don't usually have the time or interest unless it's interesting to me for some usually personal reason. I get a lot of email from people who, while they're interested in the subject matter and often enthusiastic in one way or another, have clearly NOT READ THE FAQs. PLEASE READ THEM THROUGH, before you ask me anything. It's most likely covered in the FAQs. Really. Or I probably don't know the answer. I am then very likely to refer you to the newsgroup (or to SewSassy, they're very helpful, knowledgable people there, you can also ask the owner-operatrix of Elan Patterns, Cindy Elam). Please look above. Notice I mention the newsgroup rec.crafts.textiles.sewing. A lot of this discussion is derived from posts and email I've used with permission that originated on this newsgroup. The posters there are often very helpful and knowledgeable and can answer some of the basic questions people ask me in response to these FAQs. They may also be able to point you to a more local source of something than I can, because people are spread out all over geographically on the Net. I have had some requests for my "catalogue". People. I do not now, nor have I ever, put out any sort of catalogue. READ THE FAQs before you ask me questions. READ THE WHOLE SUITE OF FAQs, just to be sure I have answered your question. If I have not, I probably don't know the answer, but you can certainly check with me about that.

Clothing sewing machinists usually work 37 to 40 hours a week. For an overview of the clothing and textiles sector, see SkillfastUK, the Sector Skills
http://www.learndirect-advice.co.uk/helpwithyourcareer/jobprofiles/profiles/prof
clothing sewing machinist
The work
Sewing machinists follow pattern instructions to stitch clothing and garment pieces together. They may work on a single part of a garment or a whole garment, and carry out several sewing operations. Depending on the employer, machinists may work on a range of clothing lines or may concentrate on a particular garment type, for instance sportswear.
The machines they use operate at high speeds, and different machines do different jobs, such as buttonholing or lock stitching, with many machines now computerised. Machinists may specialise on a particular machine or, quite commonly, use a number of machines, such as overlockers, hemmers and bar tackers, to carry out a range of tasks and produce different finishes. Machinists guide the material through the machine, correcting any mistakes as they go. They alter machine settings to suit the type of material and finish required. Some may carry out simple maintenance, such as cleaning and oiling their machines. Machinists may also work with designers and pattern cutters to make up samples of new styles to show to buyers. As well as the clothing sector, machinists work with industrial fabrics, such as those used in sail making; others can be found in bedding and soft furnishings manufacture.

Fernando Marques Penteado is a Portuguese/Brazilian artist who has worked in the fashion industry and has also directed several, community-based art projects. Significant among these was Prison Speech at Wandsworth prison, supported by the HM Prison Service, The Arts Council of England and Goldsmiths College. Marques Penteado initially became involved with the Prison Service through Fine Cell Work - a successful charity that enables prisoners to earn money by producing handworked soft furnishings, or samplers. But, rather than being commercially orientated the Prison Speech workshops were aimed at encouraging prisoners to express their emotional life in confinement.

Internet address: txcd005@unlvm.unl.edu Young teens often experience a lack of self-confidence and may even experience a decline in self-esteem as they enter their adolescent years (Bower, 1991). Clothing is a significant force in the enhancement of the self, and when used positively, contributes to one's feelings of self-acceptance, self-respect, and self-esteem (Horn, 1968). There are a wide variety of career opportunities in textiles, clothing and design. Given the opportunity, young people can explore how their talents and interests fit in a variety of fields. Sometimes the process of finding out about jobs and careers matching one's skills and interest can be a bit overwhelming. (Weber, 1990). Campus Encounters During the past two years, a three-day campus encounter event was held for 4-H youth on the University of Nebraska campus planned by a team of county Extension educators and the Extension clothing specialist. The goals were to create an awareness and encourage an interest in clothing and textiles by nurturing ways to develop self-esteem, providing an overview of the field of clothing and textiles, and improving clothing construction and design skills. The three-day program gave 4-H members an opportunity to interact with college faculty who taught a variety of sessions. Youth explored chemical and physical properties of fibers through textile experiments, gained computer experience by creating a design for a T-shirt, expanded their sewing skills using a serger sewing machine, and increased their insight into historical clothing. The group toured places in the community involved with textiles, clothing and design, and heard from graduates now employed in the field. Youth reported that they made and gained new friends who had similar interests. On the last day, the youth presented a public showing of their accomplishments.

Clothing Technology
Figure 1.. HBC believes that some basic material on clothing technology, provoding infoprmation on the history and production of fabrics and garments is important to understand children's clothing. While this material does not specifically deal with chilldren's clothes exclusively, it does provide some useful bavkground information. The care of washing of clothing is another important topic. This is not an area that HBC has been able to devote adequate attention to, but we hope to eventually focus more on these important topics.
Leaves and Grass
The clothing worn by the Ice Man found in the Alps show us that eraly man used leaves and grasses as materials for clothing. Effectively using these materials, howeverv involved technologies such as spinning and weaving.
Animal Skins
The earliest humans in the hunter gather stage made clothing out of animal skins. Only as civilization developed did weaving and more sophisticated clothing production begin.
Spinning Threads
The Spinning Wheel
Weaving
Weaving is the interlacing of threads, yarns, strips or other fiberous material. It is primarily associated with the production of fabric for clothing, but other items are also woven such as baskets. Weaving is well established in aiciet socities where it was generally relegated to women. While weaving has pre-historic orgins, many technical developments over a long period have led to modern industrial weaving mills.
Cloth and Fabric
The information on cloth does not relate specifcally to boys clothing. An understanding of cloth and textiles, however, is important in assessing clothing developments. As a result, some basic information is provided on fibers, cloth, fabrics, dyes, and textiles.
