  • Add Interest to Denims
Denim is popular all over the world. Jeans made of denim are worn by millions of people. The term denim is derived from the French "serge de Nimes," a twilled fabric made in Nimes, France. It was used as "sail" cloth for ships crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Traditionally denim was used for working garments and is part of the American tradition. Now it can be found in everything from work clothing to evening wear. We see drip-dry denim, printed denim and knitted fabric made to look like denim which, in the true sense, is not denim at all. Traditional denim is 100 percent cotton with indigo blue warp (lengthwise) yarns and white weft (crosswise) yarns. This color combination usually is made with a left-handed twill construction creating the familiar diagonal lines. The twill weave helps create the strength and durability of the fabric. Many denim fabrics are 50 percent cotton, 50 percent polyester or other fiber combinations. Cotton/Lycra blends offer 14-17 percent stretch for a comfortable fit on close-fitting garments. The cotton/polyester blends give the best of both fibers strong wear and comfort, plus limited shrinkage and wrinkling.

Barbara H. Drake When we think about recycling clothing, we often envision long hours at the sewing machine remaking garments. However, recycling need not require sewing skills or a huge time commitment. Through recombining, reusing in creative ways and accessorizing, we can continue to wear old favorites.
    Recombining
Evaluate clothes that have not been worn in a year or more. If the garments fit, are in good condition (not worn out or without permanent stains or damage) or are still in style, they may be candidates for recombining. The idea is to look at your wardrobe in a fresh way. Recombining is simply rearranging wardrobe pieces and putting different items together. Separate "outfits," coordinates or suits. Try with other wardrobe pieces, recombining into new outfits. Try on these new combinations and see how they look. Accessorize them. If you like the look, write down the descriptions of the new outfits so you don't forget how the recycled pieces are to be used. If you are stuck for ideas, look at fashion magazines. Today, a variety of colors, textures and fabrics combine for fashionable and exciting looks. Don't be afraid to experiment!

Recycling Clothing Using Your Sewing Skills
    HYG-5504-91
Barbara H. Drake If you have sewing skills and have the use of a sewing machine, you can turn little- or never-used textile items into usable additions to your family's wardrobe or home. Some basic sewing skills are needed for repairing, changing or customizing a garment. More advanced skills are needed to remodel a garment or re-cut it for use by another family member. Before you start a recycling project, ask yourself the following questions:
    • Is the fabric in good condition?
    • Is the garment worth the time that will be involved?
    • Do I have the patience to undertake the project?
    • Is the garment design one that is suitable for recycling?
    • Do I need the garment or will the person for whom it is planned wear it?
    • Do I have the necessary sewing skills to make a professional looking garment?
    • Will it save me money or will I be compensated because of a feeling of self-satisfaction?
    Changing or Restyling
Trims and buttons embellish many expensive fashion items today. Use this to your advantage to enliven clothes that otherwise may be discarded. Save trims and buttons from unusable garments to embellish T-shirts, sweatshirts and jackets. Cluster different buttons at necklines or on pockets. Use a variety of laces and trims to cover holes, spots, worn areas or creases where garments have been lengthened. Combine laces, trims and fabric scraps in unusual ways. The more lavish, the better.
