Fashion Archives Elsewhere Textiles in the Archives Throughout the 20th century Britain produced distinctive and popular textile designs which influenced what we wore and how we decorated our homes. The collections of the Archive of Art and Design allow us to see not only a wide variety of fabrics that were being sold in popular stores, but also the research and ideas of the individual designers. The Heal's fabric sample books, for example, are an invaluable guide to a store renowned for promoting modern design in Britain, while the archives of prominent designers Lucienne Day and Jacqueline Groag contain designs immediately associated with the 1950s which are still popular today. Technical advances in textile production in the first quarter of the century are described in the diaries of James Morton, founder of Morton Sundour Fabrics Ltd, and later illustrated in the textile sample books of Calico Printers' Association. As well as designs and sketches, there are also fabric samples, marketing records, photographs and correspondence, documenting the careers of several top British fashion designers. Revolutionary fashion styles are represented in the archives of John Stephen (the 'King of Carnaby Street'), Barbara Hulanicki and Biba, the Presage fashion forecast magazine, and 1970s knitwear by Ritva. More traditional styles can be seen through the archives of Lachasse, Ronald Paterson, Michael Sherard and Victor Steibel, while popular fashion is recorded in extensive collections of home knitting and sewing patterns. Fashion photography and illustration, including the scrapbooks of Cecil Beaton, are also available, as are designs for shoes, hats, underwear, cosmetics and jewellery.

With a little forethought and planning, teachers can easily integrate the world of sewing, fashion, and textiles across many subject areas in a school's curriculum. Here are some examples: Sewing in Science The science teacher can discuss textile origins and properties. Combine science and engineering through a discussion of high-tech fabrics and their usage. What materials have been developed for space suits, automobile seats, and athletic clothing and footwear? How do sewing machines work, and what was the first home sewing machine like? How has computer technology affected other areas of the fashion industry? Sewing in History The history teacher can discuss how textiles have influenced history. How did the Egyptians create linen from the flax plant, and how did this impact Egyptian culture? How did slavery help the United States become the primary producer of cotton? What happened to textiles and fashion during World War II in the U.S.?
