An Overview of the Universal Serial Bus (USB), Part 1
by Danny Simpson, Pegasus Technologies Editor's Note: Part 1 of this article was originally published in the December 2000 issue of SSS Online. Introduction
With increasing use of the Internet, cellular telephones, and communications in general, communications interconnectivity has been growing at a rate that no one could have imagined five years ago. As a result, problems have arisen in the wireless industry related to limited bandwidth as well as connections to "wired" devices. The RS-232D standard has been a staple in "wired" communications for a number of years. Generally, this standard limits the rate of communication speed to 115,000 bps, which is not adequate for today's technology. Also, RS-232 does not allow daisychaining multiple devices that are attached to one main device, unless a special design is implemented for the purpose.

Supported temperature sensors The main task for SpeedFan is to read values from available temperature sensors located inside your PC. They are mainly accessed using the 2-wire SMBus (System Management Bus) serial interface, but SpeedFan uses several ways to access almost every hardware monitor chip and reading available. Ultimate Universal Serial Bus handbook Top 21 questions about USB What is USB (Universal Serial Bus)?
USB is a specification that allows computer peripherals to be attached to the outside of the computer. It eliminates the need to install cards into dedicated computer slots and reconfigure the system. USB is really an ultimate plug-n-play specification where no switches or jumpers are required to configure. The miracle is that users can install hardware without rebooting their computers. USB allows up to 127 devices to run at the same time on the bus, with hubs connecting to devices to the bus. The USB also provides a much higher transfer rates than the traditional RS-232 or parallel-port devices. Here is a list of highlights of USB technology:
  • One standard connector type - "one-size-fits-all."
  • Hot insertion and removal - now you can attach and detach peripherals while your system stays up and running.
  • Chain devices together - USB allows some peripherals to incorporate "hubs" that serve as connection points for other devices. This lets you use more than one USB-compatible device at a time.

      CPU
The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the 'brain' of the computer. It's typically a square ceramic package plugged into the motherboard, with a large heat sink on top (and often a fan on top of that heat sink). All instructions the computer will process are processed by the CPU. There are many "CPU architectures", each of which has its own characteristics and tradeoffs. The dominant CPU architectures used in personal computing are and PowerPC . x86 is easily the most popular processor for this class of machine (the dominant manufacturers of x86 CPUs are Intel and AMD
CPUs contain a small amount of static RAM (SRAM) called a cache. Some processors have two or three levels of cache, containing as much as several megabytes of memory.

The XFree86 X server supports four classes of mice: serial, bus, PS/2, and USB mice.
    Serial mouse
The serial mouse has been the most popular pointing device for PCs. There have been numerous serial mouse models from a number of manufactures. Despite the wide range of variations, there have been relatively few protocols (i.e. data format) with which the serial mouse talks to the host computer. The modern serial mouse conforms to the PnP COM device specification so that the host computer can automatically detect the mouse and load an appropriate driver. The XFree86 X server supports this specification and can detect popular PnP serial mouse models on most platforms.
    Bus mouse
The bus mouse connects to a dedicated interface card in an expansion slot. Some video cards, notably those from ATI, and integrated I/O cards may also have a bus mouse connector. Some bus mice are known as `InPort mouse'. Note that some mouse manufactures have sold a package including a serial mouse and a serial interface card. Do not confuse this type of products with the genuine bus mouse.

    http://www.tribuneindia.com/2000/20001120/login/hardware.htm
Monday, November 20, 2000 On Hardware USB — port attached to motherboard T HE USB or the Universal Serial Bus port is one such thing that is still a mystery for a majority of computer users. It is basically a port attached with the motherboard and has compatibility with almost all hardware gadgets. Normally these days all computers come equipped with USB ports, though it is sometimes missing in the assembled PCs, despite the fact that their motherboards have support for the USB ports. However, these are useful and are, in fact, a prominent component of the computer. These ports are so useful that one can literally attach any peripheral— mouse, printers or a modem— effortlessly. One thing about the USB port is that these are the easiest to use and connect in comparison to the serial ports or parallel port. Moreover these ports also solve the problems of serial ports and parallel ports, as they are universal.
With so many hardware gadgets available today, like printers, scanners, modem, joystick, mouse, digital cameras and zip drives, the combination of 1 parallel and 2 serial ports, which is a part of the standard equipment in all hardware is grossly insufficient as the user has to take out some hardware gadgets to attach others to computer.
