There were many factors that contributed to the forming of a Serb national identity by the dawn of the nation-building 19th century. These are all largely based on the legacies that can be traced back to the Middle Ages. Serbian Rulers
Collection of Serbian rulers portraits from various monastery frescoes and other historical material. Medieval Royal Ornaments
Serbian rulers' ceremonial costume emerged from its Byzantine counterpart at the very moment when Serbian rulers chose to get close to Byzantium, politically as well as in matters of religion. That costume clearly shows the manner in which governmental power was comprehended and considered at the time, while simultaneously being filled with profound religious meaning. Byzantine Coinage
With subtle variety and remarkable longevity, Byzantine coinage is an excellent starting point for glimpsing into the millenial Greek Christian state, along with the Balkan Slav development that took place in the shadow and often under the auspices of the Universal Empire. Serbian Military Uniforms 1808 - 1918: A uniformed Serbian militia is mentioned at the end of the seventeenth century after the siege of Vienna in 1683, but no details are known of its dress. It can be supposed that it derived from national costumes like the uniform introduced at the end of the first half of the eighteenth century.

Yugoslavia
PRE-SLAV HISTORY
Palace of Roman Emperor Diocletian, Dubrovnik
Courtesy Sam and Sarah Stulberg Ancient peoples inhabited the lands that now make up Yugoslavia for millennia before Rome conquered the region in the first century A.D. Archeological findings reveal that during the Paleolithic period (ca. 200,000-8,000 B.C.) man's ancestors hunted and foraged in the mountains, valleys, and interior plains of today's Yugoslavia. In the Mesolithic period (8,000-6,000 B.C.), man expanded the use of tools and weapons and settled throughout the country. Farming came to the area at the dawn of the Neolithic Period (6,000-2,800 B.C.) and spread throughout the region by 4,000 B.C. Yugoslavia's Neolithic inhabitants planted cereal grains, raised livestock, fished, hunted, wove simple textiles, built houses of wood or mud, and made coarse pottery and implements. Man began working with pure copper in the region in the third millennium B.C. During the Bronze Age (2,800-700 B.C.), the population grew, settlements multiplied, and craftsmen began casting ornaments, tools, and weapons. After about 1450 B.C., smiths began working with locally mined gold and silver, horses and chariots became more common, and trade routes stretched to northern Europe and the Aegean. During the Iron Age (beginning 700 B.C.), trade flourished between the developing city-states of Italy and Greece and the region's first identifiable peoples: Illyrian-speaking tribes north of Lake Ohrid and west of the Vadar River (in present-day Macedonia), Thracian speakers in the area of modern Serbia, and the Veneti, who probably spoke an Italic tongue, in Istria and the Julian Alps (in present-day Slovenia and northwest Croatia).

In Both Serbia and America History is Driving Kosovo War
By Franz Schurmann Date: 04-23-99 When troops start fighting wars over land, a sense of history arises. History can be seen as streams whose currents pull people along or, sometimes, drown them. People know that they are thinking historically when their minds become filled with strange images as vivid as personal experiences. That's already happened in Serbia and may now happen in America as well. PNS editor Franz Schurmann is a professor emeritus of history and sociology at the University of California, Berkeley, and author of numerous books on foreign politics. A merica is heading towards a ground war in Kosovo and it's not because of Clinton pushing or Milosevic pulling us in. It's not because of NATO wanting to try out its new high-tech, zero-casualty strategy. Nor is it world horror over ethnic cleansing which arouses memories of the Holocaust. It's history. History is stories about ancestry which entire peoples share but which in individuals become as vivid as personal remembrances. It's widely held that in the Balkans there is too much history. In America elders admonish us for having too few historical memories "those who forget history are doomed to repeat it." A good way to get a sense of history is to envisage it as a stream. All streams have currents. If they are big enough we can swim in them. If we swim leisurely and carefully, it can be exhilarating or soothing. We can be such good swimmers that we may even forget we are in water. Or we may be poor swimmers or good dreamers and so run the risk of drowning.

History
The Medieval Kingdom of Bosnia did not last long after the defeat of the Serbian and Bosnian feudal nobility at the battle of Kosovo in 1389. Ottoman armies thus found their way open to further expansion into Europe. A long campaign against the Christian armies resulted in the conquest of Bosnia in 1463 and of Herzegovina in 1483. For the next 400 years, until the beginning of Austrian rule, Bosnia found itself relatively isolated from Europe, though the eventual capital, Sarajevo, became an administrative and trading nexus, oriented towards Istanbul. A series of caravanserai, known as hans, ultimately connected Bosnia to Persia and China along the Silk Route. A series of hans to the west connected Bosnia to Dubrovnik and Venice. During this period, many Bosnian Christians converted to Islam, in some cases to escape the taxes placed on Christians and in other cases to retain their social position as nobility. As Ottoman power began to wane and Turkey began to be pushed out of Europe, Bosnia became an important frontier for the Turkish state, although an increasingly unstable one. By the 19th century, much of Bosnia had become turbulent and anarchic; peasant revolts, especially by the Christian peasantry, were a constant threat to stability. In the meantime, Serbia, to the east of Bosnia, won independence from Turkey and established a kingdom. Repeated attempts at reform in the Ottoman Empire were unsuccessful; revolts grew in Bosnia until Austria-Hungary felt compelled to step in. The treaties of San Stefano and of Berlin in 1878 proposed that Austria occupy Bosnia until such time that order and prosperity could be restored.

Canada's History
Aboriginal peoples are thought to have arrived from Asia thousands of years ago by way of a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska. Some of them settled in Canada, while others chose to continue to the south. When the European explorers arrived, Canada was populated by a diverse range of Aboriginal peoples who, depending on the environment, lived nomadic or settled lifestyles, were hunters, fishermen or farmers. First contacts between the native peoples and Europeans probably occurred about 1 000 years ago when Vikings, from Iceland, settled for a brief time on the island of Newfoundland. However, it would be another 600 years before European exploration began in earnest ... more

National History
Yugoslavia was first created on 1 December 1918, following the surrender of Germany and Austro-Hungary after the First World War. A multi-national South Slav (Yugoslav) state was established under Serbian leadership, formally entitled the "Triune Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes". The new country incorporated the territories of six separate states: Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia (all with mainly Orthodox Christian populations, and until recently part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire). Croatia and Slovenia (both mainly Roman Catholic population and formerly part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), and Bosnia-Hercegovina (formerly Ottoman, but with a significant Moslem minority). The new country was a hastily arranged union, and Serb political domination was resented by the non-Serbs. As a result of growing Croatian separatism, in 1929, the King set up a royal dictatorship, and the name of the kingdom officially became Yugoslavia. Following the assassination of the King in 1934, the leadership became pro-German. On 27 March 1941, the leadership was deposed by an anti-German military coup, but the Germans immediately invaded the country. (This invasion delayed the attack on the Soviet Union by more than a month, possibly losing valuable time for a decisive win on the Eastern Front). Croatian Fascists supported the Germans, while royalist Chetniks and communist Partisans offered resistance. With Allied support, the latter grew strong enough to liberate Yugoslavia in 1944-45.

Greek Democracy of Personal View - Crime in Greece On this first page we want to underline, that we do not want to divide Macedonia, nor to force Macedonia to unite with Bulgaria. We do not want to be placed on the same level with Greece, since we do not question the existence of Slavic Macedonia and nonexistence of Greek Macedonia. This phenomenon exist only in very small minority of the people in Greece conquered by the Magale Idea to expand territories of neighbors cost and to reach the size of Byzantine Imperia. Bulgaria never conquer Macedonia at any time of our common history- Macedonia was undivided part of Bulgaria for 15 centuries. Some Macedonian Sites from the Republic of Macedonia claim, that Macedonians are different from Bulgarians, but have serious problem to explain the existence of Bulgarian minority in Albania (not Macedonian, but Bulgarian ). This fact prove 100% that the new invented Nation in 1944 was just political decision of the communist Yugoslavia in order to keep the occupied land after the Balkan war in 1912 and to divide the Bulgarian nation. The Yugoslavian communist do not have the chance to go to Albania and to teach the Bulgarians, that they are Macedonians.

    NATO's objectives
NATO's objectives in relation to the conflict in Kosovo were set out in the Statement issued at the Extraordinary Meeting of the North Atlantic Council held at NATO on 12 April 1999 and were reaffirmed by Heads of State and Government in Washington on 23 April 1999:
    • a verifiable stop to all military action and the immediate ending of violence and repression; the withdrawal from Kosovo of the military, police and paramilitary forces; the stationing in Kosovo of an international military presence; the unconditional and safe return of all refugees and displaced persons and unhindered access to them by humanitarian aid organisations; the establishment of a political framework agreement for Kosovo on the basis of the Rambouillet Accords, in conformity with international law and the Charter of the United Nations.
Throughout the conflict, the achievement of these objectives, accompanied by measures to ensure their full implementation, has been regarded by the Alliance as the prerequisite for bringing to an end the violence and human suffering in Kosovo.

In the Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina, conflict between the three main ethnic groups, the Serbs, Croats, and Muslims, resulted in genocide committed by the Serbs against the Muslims in Bosnia. Bosnia is one of several small countries that emerged from the break-up of Yugoslavia, a multicultural country created after World War I by the victorious Western Allies. Yugoslavia was composed of ethnic and religious groups that had been historical rivals, even bitter enemies, including the Serbs (Orthodox Christians), Croats (Catholics) and ethnic Albanians (Muslims). Ethnic Groups During World War II, Yugoslavia was invaded by Nazi Germany and was partitioned. A fierce resistance movement sprang up led by Josip Tito. Following Germany's defeat, Tito reunified Yugoslavia under the slogan "Brotherhood and Unity," merging together Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, Macedonia, along with two self-governing provinces, Kosovo and Vojvodina. Tito, a Communist, was a strong leader who maintained ties with the Soviet Union and the United States during the Cold War, playing one superpower against the other while obtaining financial assistance and other aid from both. After his death in 1980 and without his strong leadership, Yugoslavia quickly plunged into political and economic chaos.

    by Leslie Benson
Yugoslavia: A Concise History surveys the whole turbulent course of the country's history, in the context of the struggles between great powers for control of the Balkans. Torn apart by nationalist rivalries, the first Yugoslavia lapsed into paralysis and dictatorship. Axis occupation in 1941 unleashed a murderous civil war, in which the Communist Party emerged victorious. Tito's Yugoslavia appeared to the world as a peaceful, multi-national federation, but in the end disintegrated amid barbarism unknown in Europe for half a century. This revised and fully updated edition explains why, and takes the events up to the arrest of Milosevic in 2001 and beyond. History of Serbia and Montenegro
Serbia For more than 3 centuriesnearly 370 yearsthe Serbs lived as virtual slaves of the Ottoman sultans. As a result of this oppression, Serbs began to migrate out of their native and (present-day Kosovo and southern Serbia) into other areas within the Balkan Peninsula, including what is now Vojvodina and Croatia. When the Austrian Hapsburg armies pushed the Ottoman Turks south of the Danube in 699, many Serbs were "liberated," but their native land was still under Ottoman rule. Movements for Serbian independence began more than 100 years later with uprisings under the Serbian patriots Karageorge (1804-13) and Milos Obrenovic (1815-17). After the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-29, Serbia became an internationally recognized principality under Turkish suzerainty and Russian protection, and the state expanded steadily southward. After an insurrection in Bosnia and Herzegovina in 1875, Serbia and Montenegro went to war against Turkey in 1876-78 in support of the Bosnian rebels. With Russian assistance, Serbs gained more territory as well as formal independence in 1878, though Bosnia was placed under Austrian administration.

    Modern History Sourcebook:
Memorandum on the Austro-Hungarian Occupation of Serbia Presented to the Socialist Conference at Stockholm, 1917
The Economic Situation. Even before the occupation the economic life of Serbia had been more gravely disorganized than that of any other belligerent State. And what did the "bearers of Kultur" do under these circumstances? To the already formidable exactions of war weighing so heavily upon the population, they added the weight of an unjust economic policy. The first act of the authorities of occupation consisted in interning in Austria-Hungary, for no reason and from no political or military necessity, more than 150,000 persons belonging to the civil population. Serbia was thus stripped of the last reserves in the way of labor which she still possessed and countless families lost their last resources. Hundreds of thousands of children, women and old men were in this fashion condemned to die of starvation. An even more horrible fate was in store for those who were interned, and the country was drained completely of the working population which might have helped it to carry on. This was the first and most important act on the part of the invaders, in so far as their activity bears upon the economic, social, and intellectual reconstruction of occupied Serbia. The axe likewise constitutes a very important instrument of propaganda in Austro-German culture. The way in which the forests, those most vital assets of a country like ours, are being treated today in Serbia, not only represents excessive depredation but actual total destruction. To take but one example, the forest of Ragot, the property of the State, was one of the most beautiful, and one of the oldest forests in the heart of Serbia. It was worth several millions. Today this forest is a thing of the past. It has been felled to the last tree. An empty desolate waste has taken its place. The rest of the Serbian forests, some like the forests of Kopaonik, Tara and Rudnik even larger and more valuable, have suffered the same fate. The sullen blows of the Austrian axe resound in the depths of the forests of Shumadia like the blows of a hammer upon an anvil.
