The focus of research is on physical remains of old industries, regardless of whether the original production processes are retained or not, while the realms of crafts, non-mechanized manufacture and history of technical sciences are of secondary interest. The research has been conducted for a few years and its current phase could be defined as initial. At this point, the priority is field survey and the formation of a database intended for a future catalogue of industrial heritage. Area The research covers the territory of the Republic of Serbia. Two zones differing in the type and scale of industrial development have been outlined. The divergence is due to different historical backgrounds, i.e. to the fact that present-day Serbia includes the territory of the former Kingdom of Serbia and that of Vojvodina, formerly within Austria-Hungary.

Albanians and Serbs in Kosovo
An Abbreviated History G. Richard Jansen

April 25, 1999
Updated J une 5, 1999 and November12, 2002

This brief history, based on authoritative published sources, is intended to provide readers with an objective and reasonably concise history of the hundreds of years of struggle between Albanians and Serbs in Kosovo. Interested readers are strongly encouraged to consult the sources cited for a much fuller treatment of the subject. At the end of the historical summary an analysis of the NATO military intervention of 1999 is provided. This represents the author's opinion of the intervention only, and is not intended to be part of the short history of Kosovo that is provided in this document. The postscript brings us up-to-date on the essentials of the continuing controversies as of November15, 2002. History Prior to 19th Century The earliest known inhabitants of Kosovo were called Illyrians by both Greeks and Romans. Albanians today claim to be direct descendants of the Illyrians. Serbian scholars claim that Albanians appeared on the scene in the early Middle Ages as a result of intermarriage between nomadic shepherds and unromanized remnants of Illyrians and Dardanians from Thrace. Tracing such descents is difficult but the people living in the region before the arrival of the Serbs from the North are likely to have some genetic relationships to Albanians, but DNA data would be needed to definitively settle the claim, which in any case is hardly germane to the current conflict. The region was conquered by Alexander the Great 300 years before Christ and became part of the Roman province of Dardania in the 4th century A. D.

However, Serbian power wanes after Stefan's death in 1355 and in the Battle of Kosovo in 1389 the Serbs are catastrophically defeated by the Ottoman Empire . By 1459 the Ottoman Empire exerts complete control over all Serb lands. After Karageorge's defeat he temporarily submitted to the Ottomans, but in 1815 he began a new and successful rebellion. In 1817, having probably killed his rival, Karageorge, he was named prince of Serbia, a title confirmed by the national assembly (1827) and by the sultan (1830), who remained his suzerain. In 1838 the sultan, backed by Russia, forced the appointment of a council of senators hostile to Milos, who abdicated in favor of his son Milan in 1839. When Milan died in the same year, Milos's younger son, Michael (Michael Obrenovic), became prince. He was deposed in turn in 1842 and was succeeded by Alexander Karadjordjevic. www.friendsofbosnia.org History of the war in Bosnia Written May, 1996 Historical Background The former Yugoslavia consisted of six republics and two autonomous regions. Today Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Slovenia, and Macedonia are independent nations. Serbia and Montenegro comprise the rump Yugoslavia. Bosnia-Herzegovina (prewar population 4.4 million): Bosnia has the most complex mix of religious traditions among the former Yugoslav republics: 44% Bosniaks (Muslims), 31% Bosnian Serb (Eastern Orthodox), and 17% Bosnian Croat (Roman Catholics). Bosnias Muslims are Slavs who converted to Islam in the 14th and 15th centuries after the Ottoman Empire conquered the region. From World War I until the end of the Cold War, Bosnia was part of the newly created country of Yugoslavia. Bosnia declared independence in March 1992. Serbia (including Kosovo and Vojvodina) (prewar population 9,800,000): This republic is the largest and most populous. 66% are ethnic Serb of traditionally Eastern Orthodox religion. Until 1989, Serbia also had two œautonomous regions,” Kosovo and Vojvodina. Kosovo, bordering Albania, was the historic seat of a traditional Serbian kingdom and the site of the famous Battle of Kosovo in 1389, when the Serbs were conquered by Ottoman forces. Today Kosovos population is 90% ethnic Albanian, most of them Muslims. The Albanians are a pre-Slavic ethnic group speaking a distinct language unrelated to the various forms of Serbo-Croatian spoken throughout the former Yugoslavia.

History of the Archives of Serbia
The idea of the foundation of an archival institution in which the written sources in Serbia would be collected and safeguarded aroused in 1846. Drustvo srpske slovesnosti (today The Serbian Academy of Science and Art) undertook the task of collecting and studying written materials and facts from the recent Serbian history... During the second half of the 19th century several attempts were made proposing that a law on the Archives foundation should be passed; the liberation wars against the Turks, the dynastic differences and financial crises in which Serbia was involved at the time, postponed the foundation of such an institution...
More than fifty years had elapsed since the first attempts, and only 1898 the Assembly of the Kingdom of Serbia passed THE LAW ON THE STATE ARCHIVES.
Beginnings The activities of the State Archives started in 1900 and until 1926, when another State Archives was established in Novi Sad, it had been the only record office of a general type on the territory of the present Republic of Serbia.

Celebration of 200th anniversary of First Serbian Uprising and creation of Serbian modern state held
Orasac, Feb 15, 2004 - The 200th anniversary of the First Serbian Uprising and the creation of modern Serbian state has been celebrated today in Orasac, the place where Serbian leader Vozd Karadjordje Petrovic raised Serbian people to fight against Ottoman Turk oppressors on Feb 15, 1804. President of the Arandjelovac Municipal Assembly Radmilo Milosevic welcomed a large number of domestic and foreign guests, saying that our ancestors launched a liberation war against Turk rulers in this place 200 years ago, with the aim of creating a Serbian state. His Royal Highness Crown Prince Aleksandar II Karadjordjevic, a descendant of Vozd Karadjordje, said that Orasac is a gathering place of our ancestors, Serbia's foundation, a place where hope and pride were restored and where one of the most famous banners ever lifted by Serbs was erected. It carried the words "Freedom, Truth, Justice, Serbia". Crown Prince Aleksandar said that he, as Karadjordje's descendant, has a vision of a stable and modern Serbia, which respects the past, understands the present and heads towards the future. In that Serbia it is necessary to consolidate democracy, adopt a new constitution, accelerate economic growth and improve citizens'' standard of living.

    Roots of the Balkan troubles:
    a history of ethnic skirmishes
More than four years of war have turned once-beautiful Yugoslavia into a living nightmare, and into one of the bloodiest battlefields in Europe's recent history. We see the images refugees bearing children and suitcases, war-wearied elderly women, crying soldiers. But many of us don't understand exactly how the turmoil began. Here's a brief look. The rivalries between Serb, Croat and Muslim communities in Yugoslavia date back centuries. Created in the aftermath of World War I, the country was first known as the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. The name Yugoslavia was adopted in 1929. During World War II, Croats joined the Nazis in exterminating Serbs and others. The Serbs took up arms and hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians were killed on both sides. Josip Broz Tito, a partisan leader, led the resistance against the Nazis, ultimately driving them from Yugoslavia. Following the war, Tito was elected to lead the newly created Yugoslav Federation. Tito ruled with an iron fist, keeping ethnic rivalries in check. Despite such problems as astronomical inflation, the nation held together for a decade after Tito's death in 1980. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, democratic movements swept across much of Eastern Europe, including Yugoslavia. With the election of non-communist governments in four of Yugoslavia's six republics, the Federation began to crumble and ethnic divisions resurfaced.
