European powers, and Austria in particular, fought many wars against Turkey, relying on the help of the Serbs that lived under Ottoman rule. During the Austrian-Turkish War (1593-1606) in 1594 the Serbs staged an uprising in Banat - the Pannonian part of Turkey, and the sultan retaliated by burning the remains of St. Sava - the most sacred thing for all Serbs honored even by Moslems of Serbian origin. Serbs created another center of resistance in Herzegovina but when peace was signed by Turkey and Austria they abandoned to Turkish vengeance. This sequence of events became usual in the centuries that followed.
During the Great War (1683-1690) between Turkey and the Holy Alliance - created with the sponsorship of the Pope and including Austria, Poland and Venice - these three powers incited the Serbs to rebel against the Turkish authorities, and soon uprisings and guerrilla spread throughout the western Balkans: from Montenegro and the Dalmatian coast to the Danube basin and Ancient Serbia (Macedonia, Raska, Kosovo and Metohija). However, when the Austrians started to pull out of Serbia, they invited the Serbian people to come north with them to the Austrian territories. Having to choose between Turkish vengeance and living in a Christian state, Serbs massively abandoned their homesteads and headed north lead by their patriarch Arsenije Carnojevic. Many areas in southern Balkans were de-populated in the process, and the Turks used the opportunity to Islamize Raska, Kosovo and Metohija and to a certain extent Macedonia. A process whose effects are still visible today started.

Bronze Age in Serbia
Summary from the catalogue, Belgrade 1972 (exhibition in National museum of Serbia, Belgrade)
the epoch, when we begin to have definite class distinction within the primitive community. The beginnings of those divisions which shall bring us to the final social separation and the formation of the rich tribal aristocracy; which in the developed stages of the Iron Age is visible in the princely graves such as exist at Trebeniste or Novi Pazar, already within the framework of the formed Illyrian tribes - the Desidiates or the Autariates. From here to the later formation of the first Illyrian state, which as can be seen more clearly now, only transitional stage exists, between the tribal alliances and the slaveholder state community of the Roman type or the Hellenistic state; which was only one step away, and whose formation depended on the regional conditions which existed at the time. A comparison of the so-called Illyrian state with the Dacian state would be very useful but we feel that this goes beyond the scope of this survey. The last phase of this development is connected, first of all with the end of the Bronze Age and the transition into the Iron Age, the period which in Central Europe, on the basis of the characteristic method of burial of this period, is called the Urnfield period. Also in the Balkans and the Lower Danube we can count on new tribal movements at this time. These movements begin as it seems under the pressure once again originating in the Pontic area with new groups which are headed towards the Lower Danube. This series of tribal movements and migrations is historically reflected under the name of the so-called Aegean Migrations or the Invasion of the Sea-peoples, the fall of Troy, the destruction of the Mycenaean state and the disintegration of the Sea Peoples to Egypt. This event was commemorated in the famous inscription of Ramsis III at Medinet-Habu.

Short History of the Serbian Orthodox Church

Antiquity Together with east-central Europe, the Balkans formed the heartland of an Old European civilization that flourished between 7000 and 3500 BC. There is evidence of dense settlement, particularly in the Pannonian Basin, along the Sava and Danube
rivers, and spreading northward into modern Hungary along the Tisa and southward down the Morava-Vardar corridor. Food production had developed to the point that it was possible to support a measure of craft specialization, including pottery making and the smelting of copper, and small towns were formed. Several important sites in Serbia provide insights into Old European culture, particularly those at Starcevo and Vinca, near Belgrade, and at Lepenski Vir, on the Danube above the Iron Gate. After 3500 BC the region was gradually infiltrated by seminomadic pastoral peoples, believed to be speakers of languages of the Indo-European family, who came southward and westward from the Russian steppes. Their extensive trade routes carried amber, gold, and the bronze that was the basis of their superior military technology. These peoples were divided into tribal groups, one of which, the Illyrians, became firmly established throughout the western part of the peninsula. By the 7th century BC they had acquired the capacity to work with iron, and this skill became the basis both of their extensive trade with the emerging Greek city-states and of the power of the native aristocracies. East of the Morava-Vardar the land was periodically subordinated to the warrior kingdoms of the Dacians and Thracians.

http://www.kosovo.com/serhist2.html
The history of Yugoslavia YUGOSLAVIA IS THE COMPLEX PRODUCT of a complex history. The country's confusing and conflicting mosaic of peoples, languages, religions, and cultures took shape during centuries of turmoil after the collapse of the Roman Empire. By the early nineteenth century, two great empires, the Austrian and the Ottoman, ruled all the modern-day Yugoslav lands except Montenegro. As the century progressed, however, nationalist feelings awoke in the region's diverse peoples, the Turkish grip began to weaken, and Serbia won its independence. Antiquity Ancient peoples inhabited the lands that now make up Yugoslavia for millennia before Rome conquered the region in the first century AD. Archeological findings reveal that during the Paleolithic period (ca. 200,000-8,000 BC) man hunted and foraged in the mountains, valleys, and interior plains of today's Yugoslavia. In the Mesolithic period (8,000-6,000 BC), man expanded the use of tools and weapons and settled throughout the country. Greeks set up trading posts along the eastern Adriatic coast after 600 BC and founded colonies there in the fourth century BC. Greek influence proved ephemeral, however, and the native tribes remained herdsmen and warriors. Bardylis, a tribal chief of Illyria (present-day northwest Yugoslavia), assumed control of much of Macedonia in 360 BC. Philip II and his son, Alexander the Great, later united Macedonia and campaigned as far north as present-day Serbia. In the fourth century BC, invading Celts forced the Illyrians southward from the northern Adriatic coast, and over several centuries a mixed Celtic-Illyrian culture arose in much of modern Slovenia, Croatia, and Serbia.

ADVERTISING INFORMATION Novi Sad - History Novi Sad is considered a younger city, although the uncovered traces reveal man's presence dating back to prehistoric times, even before the Neolite, to the times of the Pannonian tundras and steppes, following the disappearance of the ice and the sea. A small settlement is mentioned during Roman times and the invasions of barbarian, Avarian and Turkish conquerors while the first written document, dating from 1694, writes about a bridgehead to protect the Petrovaradin Fortress. The history of Novi Sad has been recorded continually since the end of the 17th century, when the settlement of the left bank of the Danube, most outside the Petrovaradin Fortress, numbered a thousand inhabitants. The name of the city as we know it today dates back to February 1,1748, when the citizens of the former Petrovaradinski Shanac or R tz V ros, mostly tradesmen and craftsmen, paid the Court in Vienna, 95,000 forints for the status of a free city. Important social events have been registered from the period following the Turkish invasion when Novi Sad, a town on the Military Border, became not only an important economic centre, but also the cultural, national and political seat of the Serbs and the Southern Slavs on the Balkans.

There was one language and one poetic system, through which all needs of tribal life were expressed. During the migrations and settlement in the Balkans, a historical consciousness arose which gave birth to the oral epic, both in prose and in poetry. The encounter with Christian culture introduced a completely different system of poetry, which had developed over hundreds of years on the basis of Hebraism-Hellenism, and which was expressed in a language considered to be holy. A cultural type came into being which had two aspects: the older, traditional and oral, and the tradition of the new Christian civilization which was written. Various forms of contact, mixing and permeation arose between those two aspects, until a new cultural structure came about which rested on both aspects of culture and their productive relationship. They did not come into conflict because each had clearly distinct functions in society. Archbishop Danilo II with the Prophet , a composition of the founder in the church of the Holy Virgin at the Patriarchate of Pec Through this system of literary genres, it was not possible to express individual human feelings or secular themes, so the genres of oral poetry, lyric and epic, along with oral narration, stories and legends all supplemented the system of written genres. Thus, in medieval written literature, love poetry did not emerge, in spite of the relations to western European literature where this genre was highly developed.

A rchaeological finds indicate that the site has been inhabited for 7,000 years. Around 600 B.C. Thracian-Cimmerian and Scythian tribes crossed the territory of Belgrade, and in the early 3rd century B.C. Celts penetrated into this area. The Celtic Scordisci tribe funded a settlement here named Singidunum . Early in the 1st century, the Romans captured Singidunum. For the four centuries following the arrival of the IV Flavin legion in 86 A.D., the town flourished. W ith the Roman Empire, Singidunum was incorporated into the Eastern Empire. Frequent incursions of barbarians during the 5th, 6th and 7th centuries weakened the imperial frontier; Singidunum became the target of Ostrogoths, Gepids, Sarmatians, Avars and Slavs. Taking advantage of the weak defences of the Byzantine Empire, during the 6th century, the Slaves increasingly crossed the Danube (the biggest invasion being in 550) and during the 7th century they settled in Singidunum. O n the ruins of the ancient Celtic and Roman Singidunum a new town grew up with a purely Slav name - Beligrad (White Town). Under this name it is mentioned in a historical document from 878.

Dunav-TBI Short historical review Confederation of Autonomous Trade Unions of Serbia is a trade union organization with the longest tradition in Serbia. It was born on March 9 1903 by a decision of various professional and local organizations (created in the second half of the 19th century), to associate and establish, for the first time in Serbian history, one trade union confederation - the Workers’ Confederation of Serbia. Federations of workers in the branches of construction, metal manufacturing, commerce and printing as well as Workers Society of Belgrade participated in its creation.
Period between 1903 and 1914 which was rather democratic, enabled the Confederation do develop its activities, to grow and to establish its first international contacts. At the same time the first general strikes were organized, and trade union school as well as workers cultural centre were established.
In the period after the revolution Confederation was made part of the new social system in which it had not possibility to act autonomously. Still it took part in the process of self – management which for many years attracted the attention of foreign observers as an original form of socialism.

In 1990's Serbia participated in a war with Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Although the war was never officially declared, Serbia under Slobodan Milosevic helped the Serbian population in those countries in supplies. In June of 1999, after NATO airstrikes, NATO and other troops, organized in KFor entered the province following the Kosovo War. Before the handover of power, some 300,000 Serbs and other non-Albanians were ethnically cleansed from the province. In March 17 unrest in Kosovo led to several deaths as Albanians clashed with Serbs and KFor. In 2002, with the help of the European Union Serbia and Montenegro agreed to rename Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and redefine relationships between them. The State Union has a parliament and an army in common, and during the three years (till 2005), neither Serbia nor Montenegro will hold a referendum on the break-up of the union. However, this referendum has been announced by Montenegro, to be held in 2006. EU 's high representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana has said that he is happy with the agreement, because it has stopped the disintegration progress in the former Yugoslav zone.

I The Settlement of Serbs on the Balkans and the First State
The territory of the Balkan peninsula, which the Serbs - a Slavic tribe - were to settle and in it create their states, was inhabited from time immemorial. Scientists believe that today's Western and Central European countries were inhabited already in the first period of the Pleistocene (Diluvial, Ice Age), and the man appeared in the Balkans in the period of the last glaciation (Alp glaciation - Wuerm) During those cold climates, 40.000 years ago, perpetual ice descended on 1.500 meters above sea-level. After the division of the Roman Empire in 395 A.D. into the Western and Eastern (Byzantium), the latter inherited the continual struggle with barbarians at the Danube. During the reign of Justinian (527-565), the situation settled, but then an onslaught of Avars and Slavs followed, whose plundering were stopped only after their defeat at Constantinopole in 626. Among the Slavic tribes were the Serbs. According to a Byzantine source, Tsar Traklije (610-641) allowed them to settle around Salonika, which they did, subsequently withdrawing from it to the north. The same source also testifies that the first Serbian princes (arhonti) were called Viseslav, Radoslav, Prosigoj and Vlastimir.

It is interesting that the greatest promoters of creating a state of the Southern Slavs, i.e. the idea of Yugoslavia, were the Croats ( Josip Juraj Strossmayer on the first place), but they did not conceive of it as the centralized, Serb-dominated state. Their aim was to preserve the Croatian national identity and the sovereignty of Croatia and to organize the new state of South Slavs on a confederative basis.
See Strossmayer's absolute no to union with Serbs by academician Josip Pecaric (in Croatian). That is why the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, established in 1918, did not obtain the confirmation and permission of the Croatian Parliament. This state, created in 1918 from the Austro-Hungarian part , (Slovenia, Croatia, Vojvodina, Bosnia-Herzegovina) and Serbia and Montenegro , which were opposing sides during the First World War (1914-1918), contained a germ of numerous future conflicts. It was composed of different traditions, religions, nations, languages and scripts. At that time the region of Vojvodina did not include Srijem (the territory between rivers Sava and Danube), that before 1918 belonged to Croatia. Vojvodina belonged to Hungary before 1918.
