Automatically converted from OOram on 2000-06-04 at 10:27:10 The Object Management Group (OMG) has a vision of a universe of interacting objects.
OMG's initial contribution to our mastering of this world was CORBA, a standard that enables us to control the interfaces of point-to-point connections.
The UML Collaboration lifts the CORBA descriptions of individual communication links to descriptions of chosen systems of interacting objects and their behaviors.

All through the 1960's I was heavily engaged in developing a system for the computer aided design of ships. Through my shipbuilder friends, I became familiar with their systems for production planning and control. The kernel of their operation was a very sophisticated system for activity planning and resource allocation. The planning department was very happy with this system, and believed it to be very satisfactory for parties concerned. My line manager friends told a different story. What really happened was that the managers did their planning on the back of an envelope or with a private computer program. Once they had an acceptable plan, they diddled the input so that the planning department happily produced a plan they could accept.

If students ask why there are two professional organizations for psychology, you discuss the split that happened in the 1980s because of the different needs of practitioners and researchers. You also might want to mention that many academic psychologists belong to both. The following websites are most useful for faculty. Each website will give you access to current research projects. You may choose to have your students participate in some of these experiments. Several of the sites will let your students work with psychology students at other community colleges, universities, and high schools.

Abstract This paper examines perceptions of three different communication channels (written, interpersonal, and e-mail) in a new organizational form, from six perspectives: social information processing, decision making, cost minimization, social presence, uncertainty reduction, and appraisal. In this study three functional groups within the Cancer Information Service (CIS) were examined: Project Directors (N=11), Outreach Coordinators (N=16), and Telephone Service Managers (N=17). The results indicated that there were few significant differences between these functional groupings. While there were clear differences between theoretical perspectives, the specific functional role differences related to them only marginally supported our hypotheses. This study suggested that refocusing on fundamental underlying processes may be necessary at this stage in the development of the literature on channel selection in organizations.

    • Abstract Introduction Background
      Abstract
      Introduction
This paper introduces Ghostwriter, a virtual role-play environment suitable for educational drama. The target user group are eleven to twelve year old school pupils. The idea of a virtual environment for dramatic activities may seem contradictory, as noted by Danet and colleagues: “In the past, we have always understood the "magic" of theater to happen in specially set aside spaces, in which a special form of communication between audience and performers sets off "sparks" of a unique kind. The very physicality of theater has always been a very important component of it. Indeed, some might argue that without the presence of the body, theater cannot exist (Barba & Saverese, 1991). The expression "virtual theater" is, consequently, an oxymoron, bringing together two contradictory elements in a manner which creates an explosion of new meaning (Danet, Wachenhauser, Cividalli, Bechar-Israeli, & Rosenbaum-Tamari, 1995, “Computers and theatre” section, para. 1). below Ghostwriter is also used as a story writing preparation activity in the same way as real life role-play is used in the classroom to motivate and inspire children to write. The evaluation of this educational goal is presented in Robertson (2001) and Robertson and Good (in press). The characterization techniques used in stories written after using Ghostwriter was compared to the characterization in stories written under normal classroom circumstances. The stories were compared using a new, fine –grained analysis scheme for assessing children’s writing. The main result was that the stories written after the virtual role-play contained more indications of characters’ relationships, particularly as portrayed through dialogue, than did normal classroom stories. Expert evaluation of the role-play sessions and resulting stories supports the view that the virtual role-play environment is particularly beneficial to children with low literacy achievement.
