Health students and senior citizens share new experiences through summer exercise program
By Jessica Toups Published: Thursday, June 26, 2003 Since 1992, the Adult Health and Development Program has united Nicholls students with senior citizens from the community for exercise and new life experiences.
"The program encourages students to interact with diverse populations and to encounter a different mix of people on a normal basis," Angela Hammerli, the director for the Adult Health and Development Program, said.
Hammerli said the program starts off with giving the members an education lecture by the nursing faculty or physicians on topics such as blood pressure, diabetes and stroke prevention. Then, the senior citizens do warm up exercises with the students. After warm up, the senior citizens are allowed to pick out of two slot times to participate in different activities. This year the program has fun activities planned for the senior citizens such as recreational games, weight lifting, yoga and even chair aerobics.
"Health and PE 492 is a stress relief class that you look forward to at the end of the day. It is an awesome program that teaches college students how to intertwine with the older generation," Doris Savoie, General Family and Consumer sciences senior from Thibodaux said.

Social Planning Seniors who fill up their calendars with a variety of activities are more likely to relish retirement I n his three decades of interviewing and studying older Americans, Gene Cohen, a psychiatrist and gerontologist who heads George Washington University's Center on Aging, Health, and Humanities in Washington, D.C., and author of the book The Creative Age, has found that retirement can be liberating and empowering. He talked with senior Writer Kim Clark about why Americans should take steps to make sure they enjoy their post-career years. Annual Retirement Guide The pressure is on baby boomers saving for retirement Major companies are recruiting older workers Diet, exercise, and checkups will add years to your life Some healthy retirement tips ... Reverse mortgages lend a hand to seniors What mistakes do people make? Fewer than 10 percent had any preparation for how they would spend their time. That was amazing. Almost everybody who was retired said they would have loved to have formally explored what they would actually do in retirement. Half the people were very satisfied with retirement. But half were not. There are those who flounder and are not happy. And then there are those who are so conscientious they fill up their time with a lot of stuff that is lousy and hard to leave because they are so conscientious. Suddenly their time is filled. But they have lost their flexibility, and they've gotten involved with things where they really don't have a chance to challenge themselves and develop a sense of mastery. This is very important. People want something meaningful and satisfying, not some mindless type of thing, such as putting stamps on envelopes. Better planning would have helped.
