Abstract
One focus of intergenerational programming is to facilitate positive attitudes toward relationships between older adults and children. Through repeated, meaningful interactions, it is hypothesized these children and adults will develop a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the characteristics and challenges faced by the other age group. Through qualitative data analysis at five sites in a Midwestern state, this research examines attitudes toward older adults among children ( n=78 ) who participated in community-based intergenerational programs. Children's responses provide evidence to suggest that differences in children's views of older adults vary by a child's cognitive level.

About the College of Health and Social Services at New Mexico State University
COLLEGE MISSION The mission of the College of Health and Social Services is to provide academic programs that prepare professionals to address issues directly affecting the quality of life in a rapidly changing society. The college includes the academic departments of Health Science, Nursing and the School of Social Work. The college advises more than 2,000 students including all non-degree and provisionally admitted students. HEALTH SCIENCE The Department of Health Science offers the Bachelor of Community Health (BCH), a Bachelor of Environmental and Occupational Health (EOH), and a Master of Public Health in Community Health Education (MPH). The department also offers minors in community health, gerontology, and health administration.
The BCH is one of only a few such programs nationally to be fully approved by the Society of Public Health Education/American Association of Health Education Baccalaureate Program Approval Committee. A student who completes this degree will be prepared to take the national exam to become a Certified Health Education Specialist. Graduates hold positions in public health organizations, volunteer health agencies, and agencies for senior citizens.
The BEOH involves the development, implementation, evaluation and promotion of methods used to manage indoor and outdoor environments that may have an adverse impact on human health. The EOH professional has an emphasis on prevention rather than treatment, and on human health rather than ecological protection. This degree program is based on a solid foundation in the behavioral, biological, physical and technical sciences. Graduates may find employment in federal, state and local health departments, environmental protection agencies, water supply and wastewater treatment facilities, manufacturing, food processing/management, environmental engineering, insurance companies and the military.

FACULTY
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION The Family Life Education certificate program is modeled after the National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) CFLE Standards and Criteria. The goal of the program is to prepare students to provide Family Life Education programs in schools, churches, youth programs, family service agencies, and other areas of the community. A core belief of the program is that even credentialed and experienced teachers can be unprepared or under-prepared to teach the subjects subsumed under Family Life Education. The certificate program is designed to cover the ten family life substance areas delineated and required by NCFR. (See list below). While the program is designed to assist students in obtaining provisional Certifications through NCFR, a campus certificate is awarded upon graduation provided all certificate and degree requirements have been fulfilled.
Note: This program is taken concurrently with established degree requirements. The majority of courses for the certificate program are applicable toward course requirements for a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences. The certificate is not a teaching credential. In conjunction with a BA or MA degree or a state teaching credential, it may be helpful in obtaining employment as a Family Life Educator.

Dr. Judyth Swingen maintains an active schedule of service, particularly with the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, serving on its Social Security Reform Task Force. As a member of this task force, Dr. Swingen is helping to gather information especially important as the country considers proposed changes to the social security program. Key to her contributions to the accounting profession is her service on the Institute's Tax Executive Committee and the Pre-certification Education Executive Committee. She used her expertise toward the development of ethical standards and tax policy positions for the entire organization, which has more than 340,000 members. She oversees the organization's efforts to recruit students to the accounting profession, and helps to make print and website materials available to accounting educators. As associate dean for graduate business programs and professor of accounting, Dr. Swingen provides direction for a major institutional voice in American business, colleagues say. “She has been the guiding force in the achievement of college accreditation from the Association of Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and in the growth of MBA programs throughout Central Arkansas,” says Professor Jimie Kusel of the UALR Accounting Department.

Home Letters to Editor Domestic World ... Chinese Chinese Senior Citizens Enjoy Family Life Despite the growing number of nuclear families in big cities, the tradition for several generations to live under one roof is far from being outdated in China's rural areas, where most senior citizens still prefer living with their children and grandchildren. In a recent survey among senior citizens in Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, some 96 percent of the respondents said they prefer to be under the care of their children, rather than going away to a senior citizens' center. And their choice is always backed by their children, who closely observe traditional codes, in particular, the filial piety. The Ma's is a big family in Haining County, east China's Zhejiang Province, with four generations under the same roof. The great grandparents, both over 80, are immersed in happiness and enjoy good health, thanks to the love and care from their children and grandchildren. The younger generations have made every effort to improve the quality of the old couple's life. They take up all the household chores, from farming, cooking, cleaning to caring for the old couple in time of sickness. From time to time, they would take theold couple to sightseeing tours.

The Families and Communities Together (FACT) Coalition has awarded $120,000 in grants to four research projects that focus on early childhood science education, breastfeeding support to low-income women, Early Head Start and bridging the generational and digital divides. "These community-based research partnerships emerged as the best from among a highly competitive pool of proposals," said FACT Co-Director Janet Bokemeier. "FACT is proud to support this type of engaged scientific inquiry which not only has great potential to advance our understanding of child and family issues, but also responds to societal needs and creates positive change in Michigan communities." Collaborative university-community teams will lead projects in 20 Michigan counties: Bay, Berrien, Chippewa, Genesee, Hillsdale, Ingham, Jackson, Kalamazoo, Kent, Lenawee, Monroe, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oakland, Otsego, Sanilac, Shiawassee, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne. The awards are part of FACT's annual competitive grant program which has invested more than $1.5 million in research and outreach projects throughout the state since 1999. The goal of the program is to support cutting-edge, multidisciplinary research projects that address the health and well-being of children, youth and families and build partnerships with communities.
