News Bulletin Current Affairs World War II ... Mobile Senior Citizens Keep on Surfing Leading by example: German politician Edmund Stoiber logs on Internet chat rooms and late night surfing are no longer the sole domain of the square-eyed younger generation. Senior citizens are taking to the World Wide Web as the number of 'Silver Surfers' soars.
The Over-50's are logging on to the Internet in surprisingly high numbers, according to a symposium on the 'Silver Surfer' phenomenon held at Frankfurt University. The week long symposium, put together by the Frankfurt-based senior citizens Web site feierabend.com and Deutsche Telekom, has been organised to discuss the boom in sites aimed at the Over-50's. It also reveals the increasing numbers who are using the Internet for research and entertainment purposes. In 1995, three percent of net surfers were older than 50 years of age; today that number has risen to 20 percent. Estimates suggest that by 2003, a quarter of all Internet surfers will be in the 'Silver Surfer' age bracket.

... Emotional Support for Senior Citizens The myth of the Knowledge Society Ashutosh P Bhupatkar The scientific establishment (SE) in our country is in venerable hands. The eminent leaders of the establishment are held in awe on account of their numerous achievements from the atomic power to the space launches of satellites. Many of these leaders never tire of speaking about the knowledge society and the need for India to take its due place in a world that would increasingly be dominated by knowledge societies. Coming as it does from such exalted personalities, the term 'knowledge society' inspires the same awe. It is not easy to understand what they mean by it. It could mean a society, which is organised on the basis of the knowledge possessed by different sections of the society. The most knowledgeable would be the most powerful sections, it would appear to a layman. Or its connotation is a society, in which production, distribution, maintenance and adaptation take place primarily on the basis of knowledge, which pushes other resources lower down the order of importance. Software engineers, doctors, lawyers and architects are examples of professionals who deploy their knowledge for the benefit of society and in the process acquire power, prestige and pelf. It could also mean a society in which all members strive to live by, for and with knowledge, such that the society grows and develops with the help of the knowledge resources.

Catastrophic illnesses. Life memories. Medicines. Family members. Daily living skills. Hopes. Fears. Caring for the older patient is a complex challenge for any physician, and is a mission that requires compassion, understanding and skill. Fortunately, a new, aggressive curriculum at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio is placing medical students in the private homes and assisted living facilities of senior citizens. There the students are learning from senior "professors" who are sharing their life situations. "We are devoting ourselves to developing the next generation of academic geriatricians," said David V. Espino, MD, associate professor of family practice at the Health Science Center and director of the Hartford Center for Excellence in Geriatrics Education. The San Antonio center, established in January with a $525,000 grant from the John A. Hartford Foundation in New York, is one of only 25 nationwide. The Health Science Center's Medical School curriculum was revised so that students gain clinical experience with seniors very early in their education and training, said Cynthia L. Alford, PhD, assistant professor of family practice and program coordinator with the Hartford Center. "By interviewing seniors about their health history and life events, the abstract classroom learning of the first years of Medical School becomes more relevant," she added.
