National Academy for Teaching and Learning about Aging
The mission of the National Academy for Teaching and Learning about Aging is to promote a life-span approach to increasing understanding about aging issues through education and intergenerational cooperation. Today's young people have the potential to live long productive lives in an increasingly aging society. However, they are more likely to learn about the problems than positive aspects of aging. Without deliberate educational intervention, ageist humor, literature and media will continue being the primary sources of information for young people. These sources perpetuate ageist myths and stereotypes, age discrimination and gerontophobic behavior. National Academy for Teaching and Learning about Aging

Three cloned mulesIdaho Gem, Idaho Star and Utah Pioneerwere among the popular attractions during Family Science Days, a series of child-friendly, educational public-engagement events at the 2004 AAAS Annual Meeting. Veterinary scientist Gordon Woods of the University of Idaho and his colleague, Dirk Vanderwall, engaged with the public the afternoon of Sunday, 15 February, reporting that the cloned mules appear to be healthy, normal and energetic. Children, parents and others asked challenging questions: One young man asked, for instance, whether cloned mules share the same memories. (The researchers explained that the three mules were born on different days.) More than 3,300 parents, children, teachers, and citizens were drawn to downtown Seattle for Family Science Days during the 2004 AAAS Annual Meeting, which also drew 5,700 registrants and 1200 members of the U.S. and international press. The Family Science Days program was conducted in collaboration with the Pacific Science Center and the Institute for Systems Biology.

    THE ELDERLY
The Senior Citizens of Our Ummah
My uncle, my mother's eldest brother, died early this week in Pakistan. He was about 80. Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun. To Allah we belong and to Him we return.
The same can be said, for the most part, for senior citizens in most Muslim countries. There is a social structure, an extended family, in which an individual can spend the rest of his or her life surrounded by doting children and grandchildren, as well as peers they may have grown up with their whole lives.
This is not the case for many Muslim seniors in North America.
The United Nations has designated 1999 the International Year of the Older Person. While some may dismiss this as token acknowledgement of senior citizens worldwide, it's still a good time for Muslims to remember our seniors in North America, and the challenges they face, which have largely been ignored. The General Picture Overall, Muslim communities do treat their elderly better than how mainstream North American society does.
