Issues in African History
Professor James Giblin, Department of History, The University of Iowa Like the art of all peoples, the art of Africans expresses values, attitudes, and thought which are the products of their past experience. For that reason, the study of their art provides a way of learning about their history. Through the study of African art we can study the questions which have long preoccupied historians of Africa. This essay written by a historian who studies the African past presents an introduction to these questions. Its purpose is to encourage students to use their knowledge of African art to think about issues in African history. As students of African art begin to consider the African past, they must also consider how Western conceptions of "race" and "racial" difference have influenced our notions of the African past. These ideas, which have usually contrasted the presumed inferiority of black peoples with the superiority of whites, arose in Western societies as Europeans sought to justify their enslavement of Africans and the subsequent colonization of Africa. Historians now recognize that ideas of racial inferiority have inspired the belief that in the past African peoples lived in a state of primitive barbarism. At the same time, they have realized that many of the European writings which they use to reconstruct the African past such as accounts by nineteenth-century missionaries and travelers, for example are themselves tainted by these same notions of African inferiority.

The Gambia Catholic Relief Services is committed to improving the food security in rural households and among vulnerable groups in The Gambia. Many of CRS' current program efforts and investments reflect innovations directed toward the development of a five-year joint Senegal/Gambia program. The program builds on existing economic, cultural, and family linkages between Senegal and The Gambia, and aims to improve the market for sesame and provide resources to vulnerable populations. In this way, CRS seeks to make the most of limited resources and to address needs that are relevant in both The Gambia and Senegal.
CRS has also taken a regional approach to addressing HIV/AIDS, not only by supporting its church partners' contributions to national efforts, but also by linking partners between countries. An HIV/AIDS strategy has been developed which includes Senegal, The Gambia, and Guinea-Bissau. This strategy focuses on developing techniques to reduce the stigmatization of people living with HIV/AIDS by involving youth in peer counseling activities, educating CRS staff about prevention and transmission of the illness, providing community care for people living with AIDS, and advocating for children affected by AIDS. CRS supports the Home Based Care and Counseling project in The Gambia, which provides services and information through local community groups.

The Kora - The Kora is arguably the most complex chordophone of Africa. It is played in the westernmost part of Africa in Mali, Gambia, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Sierra Leone, and Senegal. Each of the regions have characteristic playing styles and to some extent a region can be deduced from specific repertoire, but they share quite of bit of repertoire as well. It is very common to hear the same song with a variety of regional variants. The people most famous for the development of the Kora are the Mandinka of The Gambia, Senegal, and Guinea-Bissau. The Kora is made In the Cassamance region of southern Senegal it is also common to see the 25 string Kora Cassamance. The Kora is strung with monofilament fishing line in varying thickness. In the days before monofilament was available braided antelope hide was used and produced a sound less brilliant than the modern Kora sound. The range of the Kora is about 3 and 3/8ths of an octave and is capable of highly contrapuntal textures. A Kora musician may accompany his own voice or he may have a Jeli Woman sing the vocal line while tapping the rhythm on the calabash. Kora repertoire may also be performed instrumentally. Since each Kora song relies strongly on the vocal line it is easy to discern a piece when it is played instrumentally. A good musician will bring out the vocal line in an instrumental rendering of a traditional piece and ornament it and play off of that line with soloistic runs called

    Panel abstract
The Casamance occupies a particular place in the Senegalese imaginery: that is, as an exotic or troubled region whose dynamics are somehow thought to be distinct from those of the ‘real’ Senegal. Much recent research has sought to place the Casamance in its national context, demonstrating how exoticism and violence are both related to its peculiar standing in relation to the rest of the country. By contrast, this panel aims to examine the Casamance in relation to the neighbouring states of the Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Guinea from colonial times to the present.
