The Passport to Paradise gallery highlights the bold, visual images found all over Dakar by focusing upon the urban visual culture of the Mourides, a Senegalese Sufi movement centered upon the life and teachings of a local saint named Sheikh Amadou Bamba. Read our recently published guides to best practices in digitizing text and multimedia resources. Download them today from our "Best Practices" site. Fuuta Tooro Oral History Project The Fulbe people have played a prominent role in West African history, and a complete background on the Fuuta Tooro Oral History Project is available as part of this gallery. As cattle pastoralists, the Fulbe people spread across 2,000 miles of savanna land, from Senegambia in the west to Cameroun in the east, over the last one thousand years. As Muslim revolutionaries some of them established Islamic regimes over the last three centuries in four widely separated zones of the savanna. It was in these areas that they adapted the Arabic script to the writing of their language, Fulfulde, and developed other institutions for the dissemination of Islam in West Africa. More than any other single people, the Fulbe have led in the process whereby Islam has become the majority faith of the savanna region. The interviews below are representative samples from the collection still being digitized for this project.

    The Collected Poetry
Leopold Sedar Senghor, Translated by Melvin Dixon 639 pages, 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 « Paper $19.95 ISBN 0-8139-1832-4 Leopold Sedar Senghor was not only president of the Republic of Senegal from 1960 to 1981, he is also Africa's most famous poet. A cofounder of the Negritude cultural movement, he is recognized as one of the most significant figures in African literature. This bilingual edition of Senghor's complete poems made his work available for the first time to English-speaking audiences. His poetry, alive with sensual imagery, contrasts the lushness and wonder of Africa's past with the alienation and loss associated with assimilation into European culture Translator Melvin Dixon places Senghor's writing in historical persepctive by relating it to both his political involvement and his intellectual development. The rich mosaic of cultural heritage derives from the ethnic diversity that is portrayed by the Mandinka, Fulani, Serer, Tukulor, Wolof and Jola people. The ancestors of some of these tribes migrated from as far as the Niger River Valley. The ancestors of the Tukulorís, who founded the Tekrur Kingdom, had extensive contact with the Berbers from North Africa due to the Trans-Saharan trade. This commercial interaction played a central role in the advent of the Islamic religion in West Africa. Today, the Senegalese religious landscape is comprised mainly of Sunni Muslims. The Great Mosque at Touba is a destination point for religious pilgrimages. The Senegambian region was an important source of Slaves during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. During that era, the Portuguese, Dutch and French, all had an active involvement in the region. The presence of European influence is very evident in the architectural design of the coastal forts utilized in the Slave Trade and other commercial activities. The infamous Goree Island,ìMaison Des Esclavesî which lies less than 2 miles from Dakar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, dedicated as a memorial to the abomination, which was Slavery. The view from the ìDoor of No Return.î was the last one of Africa etched into the memory of slaves shipped to the Americas. The Forts on the island serve as Historic Museums. French influence can be seen beyond the architectural design of the carved wooden balconies and verandas of French colonial homes, the French flavor in Senegalese cuisine and French music in popular culture. Senegalese musicians Baba Maal and Yossou Nour serve as international ambassadors to the region through performances at various international venues. The country also has a noticeable amount of Arab influences.

The Mount Holyoke College program in Dakar offers an exciting opportunity for students to explore a unique and important part of the Francophone world. If you are interested in using your French language skills to learn about countries other than France, to challenge yourself, and to broaden your perspectives on Francophone history and culture, we invite you to apply for a year or semester on our program in Senegal. ACADEMIC PROGRAM Program students typically sign up for a combination of courses, including Wolof language instruction (required), special topics courses arranged in cooperation with other programs in Dakar, and courses at UCAD. Students are required to take at least one University course; it is expected that students will take at least one special topics course, but they may take more. The normal courseload on the program is four courses. (Most university courses are year-long, so spring semester students will likely enter courses that began in November or December.) Mount Holyoke awards a maximum of 32 credits for the year, 16 credits for spring semester. Wolof instruction is generally ungraded, but students receive grades for all other courses.
