Culture
  • What is the culture of Ghana?
  • What would you say are some major cultural differences between the US and Ghana? Earlier someone mentioned that hugging as a greeting was new to you, what are some others? What is rude here and not there and vice versa?
    Economy
  • I was in Africa two years ago, and although i never saw people living in trees, I noticed something rather shocking. In some neighborhoods there were mansions that were built practically next to mud houses. And the rich folks were living very much like Prince Akeem in "Coming to America"! There's inequality everywhere, but it was rather pronounced, because I guess these folks lived side by side. So the question is, what are the rich Africans doing about their poor folks? What's the point in complaining about inequalities in the gobal economy when Africans themselves practice it in their own backyards?
    Geography
  • Do Africans in Africa feel a kinship to other peoples on the continent? Or is it like say, Americans and Mexicans, divergent groups who associate virtually only on the basis of economics?

Country Info Senegal Introduction Senegal General Data Senegal Maps Senegal Culture ... Senegal Time and Date Senegal Culture Back to Top Both the rhythm of life in Senegal and the Senegalese mentality have evolved over a long time of time in a setting that was unacquainted with technology in the Western sense of the word. The attitudes of Senegalese in their relations with nature are accordingly different from those of Europeans in general. Fear, magic, and collectivism are dominant in orthodox Senegalese life. Writing is absent or constitutes at best the prerogative of no more than the few. The cultural heritage is preserved in oral tradition, of which the guardians have been the most experienced, that is to say the oldest, men. Society thus forms a hierarchy, at the summit of which stand the oldest people. Art, sculpture, music, and dance remain typically Senegalese in expression. Sculpture is characterized by abstraction and by the ideogram; a sculptured gazelle, for example, may be described solely by its horns and its neck, while an elephant may be described only by the immense fan formed by its ears and its trunk. The Senegalese artist thus neglects the material aspect in order to give free rein to ideas and to feelings. Similarly, in the absence of written music, the imagination of the musician is released. Without falling into the realm of fantasy, the griot (a West African troubadour and historian) recites poems or tells stories of warrior deeds, drawing upon his own sources of inspiration. Both dance and music owe a great deal to improvisation, which, combined with rhythm, produces an intense effect upon the entire community.

Snapshot of Senegal Senegal, which is situated in the westernmost part of the African continent, has more than 8 million inhabitants and covers an area of 196 722 sq km. It is bordered by Guinea Bissau, the other Guinea, Mali and Mauritania. Contrary to many other African countries, Senegal is rarely in the news since the political situation is stable (elections are to be held this month) and people of different ethnic groups and religions usually live in harmony. The majority of the population are Muslim : 90%, the rest being made up of 5% Christian and 5% animist (a religion of nature whereas the other two were imported). Having been colonized by France, Senegal, which gained independence in 1960, has kept French for administration, business and general use, but most people (80%) understand wolof, the language of the majority ethnic group. The capital of Senegal, Dakar, a peninsula swept all year by trade winds from the sea, is a trading center for the whole of West Africa. A FEW HISTORICAL FACTS Dakar, which was already was a center for commerce, even during the slave trade, which was carried on intensively between 1550 and 1850. Slavery existed in this region before the arrival of the white man, with some tirbes probably practising it more than others. Slaves were part of the spoils of war when one kingdom became the suzerain of another. But this trade had never reached the extent it did after the arrival of westernners.

    CULTURE Art - Glass Painting
The glass painters (that are called "suwer" in wolof) – also called "fixés" in French – is an art specific to the Senegal. Their origin is very old and their theme has developed little by little. The painting often very naive, at the same time tell a story, of everyday life. They can be found hinging on the walls in the city, laying on the sidewalks, and in the shops… The technique is very simple, but requires a high level of skill; starting with an outline first traced in ink, successive layers of paint is applied to the glass. The side not painted lets the picture appear under the thickness of the glass; the painted side is protected with a carton that also services as a support. It is believed that the first glass painting come from the he first glass painting are believed to have come from the mediterranean. It tells the story of the Islam period the battles, the disciples, the prophets and the holy men. In Senegal the great figures of the religious confraternity the resistance against the colonization (Cheikh Amadou Bamba, El Hadj Malick Sy, Limamou Laye, Lat Dior...) have inspired many paintings.

Students soak up African culture in Senegal
By Chrystal Holmes Published: Monday, March 14, 2005 UM-St. Louis' AIGA student group, an organization that works to expose students to graphic arts, and the Center for International Studies helped sponsor a trip to Senegal so students could participate in the fourth edition of the International Art Exchange. From Dec. 6 through Dec. 28, UM-St Louis students took their knowledge and talents to Senegal, a country in Western Africa that borders the North Atlantic Ocean that lies between Guinea-Bissau and Mauritania. In Dec. 2004, workshops and an art festival were held in the city of Tambacounda in Senegal. Artists from all over the world, including movie makers, dancers, actors, musicians, storytellers, painters, sculptors, writers, craftsman and designers were invited; in total, 105 artists were invited.

    www.dogon-lobi.ch
Is there such a thing as a stereotypical mosque? Are all mosques necessarily characterized by a minaret, a dome, and arches? Are all mosques decorated with mosaics or stucco? From North Africa to India, these elements are the defining features of mosque architecture. Nevertheless, it should be noted that Islam reached these lands largely by conquest, and this meant that the know-how of mosque building was wholly imported. In the case of Sub-Saharan Africa as well as China and Southeast Asia, the entry of Islam was more gradual and was transmitted by merchants and traders. I would argue that this partly explains why the mosque architecture of these regions conforms less explicitly to the norms of what has become the blueprint of the mosque. According to Alsayyad, the Arab conquest of the Middle East was motivated by three aims that conform to the notion of colonialism: a divine mission of spreading the Islamic religion; the ruling Arab elite maintaining political power while expanding trade; and finally, gaining profit from the resources of conquered lands. However, Arab conquest did not always encounter confrontation; on the contrary, as in the case of Damascus and Sicily for instance, Arab dominion was preferable to Byzantine exploitation.
