African Underground Vol 1 - Hip Hop - Senegal
Five years ago, Ben Herson travelled to Senegal and was blown away by the skills of the local hip hop talent. He returned with his 'mobile guerrilla-style' production techniques and has just released a great album on his own label, Nomadic Wax. We have had words. Why is hip hop so popular in Africa? How does it relate to local culture?
Hip hop is popular for a number reasons: on a cultural level, the idea of speaking, singing and rhyming over a raw beat is not a foreign idea for most countries in Africa. In 2000, the rappers helped to oust Abdou Diouf in the first peaceful democratic election ever in Senegal Generally speaking, most African counties have some sort of oral tradition which is accompanied by a beat and little else. Because of this, it has led to a much more widespread acceptance and intergration of American hip hop in Africa. In Senegal, for example, they have an oral spoken word poetry called Tallif which has been around for 1,000 years! Hip hop has also been used as a tool for the youth of Senegal to engage in a meaningful dialogue with their elders and politicians about their displeasure with their country's political and religious leaders.

Our soccer ambassador to Senegal Israel National Team coach Avraham Grant to give workshops in Senegal, Mauritania in hopes of improving Israel’s relations with Muslim African countries
Tamar Ganor Avraham Grant, Israel’s National team coach, will soon head for Africa at the behest of the Foreign Ministry to help train Senegalese and Mauritanian soccer coaches. Grant will also be training a local Mauritanian team called Arafat. Peace through sport Can soccer bridge the gap? / By Ynetnews Top international coach Jose Mourinho to assist in establishing Palestinian, Israeli soccer schools Full Story The Israeli coach visited Tunisia a year and a half ago during the African championship games, and will conduct these workshops in hopes of improving Israel’s relations with other Muslim African countries. Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom and Israel’s ambassador to Mauritania, Boaz Bismuth, came up with the idea to show Israel’s appreciation to Mauritania, the only Muslim country to maintain full diplomatic ties with Israel over the years, particularly during the years of the Intifada. When neighboring Senegal heard that Grant would be coming to Mauritania, they put in a request to have their coaches benefit from the Israeli coach’s expertise as well.

Seminar in African Art and Culture Art, Architecture and Tradition; Building Identity in West Africa
Prof. Peter Mark
Department of Art History
Wesleyan Universit
Email: pmark@wesleyan.edu
Course Description:
This seminar investigates some of the diverse ways in which West African peoples have articulated their sense of who they are by means of the buildings they construct and the material culture they create. We will focus on architecture in historical perspective, and on the contemporary phenomenon of revitalized ritual and folklore. The course begins by asking fundamental questions about Art History. Is the discipline able to encompass broad issues of contemporary African culture and identity? Is African Art itself a meaningful concept? Or is it hopelessly bound to Western culture? At the same time, the introductory meetings offer a critical reevaluation of other analytical categories. If we retain the concept of "African art," contemporary culture forces us to redefine its boundaries to include such largely twentieth century phenomena as folkloric dance and the re-creation of self-consciously "traditional" religious rituals. And the African subjects of our study, too, must be redefined, insofar as the "ethnic group," viewed in historical perspective, ceases to exist as a fixed feature of the African cultural landscape. Ethnic identity is itself in constant change. What is ethnicity anyway, and how is ethnic identity related to culture?

South Africa is a vibrant, young country that is just emerging from three centuries of European colonialism and white minority domination. This is therefore a truly revolutionary era for South Africa as it passes from its European past into an African future that includes all its citizens. Cape Town , where the program will be based, lies at the tip of Africa where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet. It is the oldest city in the country and arguably one of the most beautifully situated cities in the world, lying on the lower slopes of the breathtaking Table Mountain. Participants will have a unique opportunity to witness the birth of a new nation as it strives to harmonize peoples of diverse African, Indian and European heritage into one community with a common culture and a shared South African identity.

Representatives from the Organisation of African Unity
Honourable Ministers
Distinguished Delegates
Ladies and Gentlemen I would like to start by extending my heartfelt thanks to you for inviting me to address you on a topic which is not only close to my heart, but which I believe is one of the most important keys to our future on the continent. I would also like to express my appreciation to the government and the people of Senegal who are hosting this meeting for the warm hospitality extended to my delegation and me since arrival. The women in our ancient societies wielded a lot of power in the affairs of their communities, in both reproduction and production. They were the custodians of our culture and language. However, the power of women has been eroded by the wave of colonialism which gradually undermined our culture, our values and dispossessed us of the land in particular, and with industrialisation women were marginalised and discriminated against by the colonial administrations. They undermined women and relegated their role to the kitchen so to say. They were left to produce children with no proper means to bring them up. The power was also eroded by the conflicts and wars which turned them into refugees. They became prey to preventable diseases. Women on this continent constitute the bulk of the poor, the refugees, and the sick including those suffering from HIV/AIDS. Research shows that 80% of women who are infected are faithful to their partners.
