Though West Africans love and revere their musicians, they have not always granted them high social status. A griot may provide the soul of a good wedding party, but he can also be seen as a hustler, and nobody you'd want your daughter to marry. As in other regions of the continent, many a West African star's story begins with the tale of how he or she studied and played music despite parental objections. And frequently, success involved a period of exile. Though Britain and France have long withdrawn from West Africa, their capitals, London and Paris, have provided a vital pathway for musicians in search of an international career. As musicians have moved back and forth, cultural dialogue has continued, and the cities have become important production centers. Meanwhile, West Africa has built up its own studios and production facilities, especially in Lagos, Nigeria, Dakar, Senegal, and Abidjan, Ivory Coast, the region's recording industry capital. In medieval times, parts of Senegal belonged to the empires of Mali, Ghana and Songhai. The first Portuguese explorers arrived in the 15th century, followed by French colonists in the 17th century. Throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, the Senegalese coast was a major landing point for the transatlantic and European trades in ivory, gold and slaves. In 1763, Senegal was ceded to Britain as part of the settlement of the Seven Years War (which was a dispute over North American territories) but returned to the French in 1817. In 1895, Senegal was incorporated into French West Africa. After World War II, it became a French Overseas Territory.

Dakar Culture Dakar is the nation's capital and its largest city. The climate is as varied as the terrain. There are two seasons, rainy and dry. The rainy season lasts from June through October. Along the coast the weather tends to be breezy and cooler while further inland it is drier in the north and more tropical in the south. Temperatures range from 64 to 86 degrees. The economy of Senegal is relatively diversified. The main agricultural crop is groundnuts. Other crops are maize, millet, beans, rice, sugar and cotton. Indu stries include textile manufacturing and food processing as well as petroleum and phosphate production. Fishing industries have become the largest export earner. Tourism is also a growing sector of the economy. The Paris to Dakar Rally has the reputation of being the most trying off-road race in the world. The object of this event is for man and car to take on the elements and see who wins. Driving everything from specially-built vehicles to Hummers and low- cost cars, teams hit the road in Paris. Independent from France in 1960, Senegal joined with The Gambia to form the nominal confederation of Senegambia in 1982. Despite peace talks, a southern separatist group sporadically has clashed with government forces since 1982. Senegal has a long history of participating in international peacekeeping.

As in many countries, disadvantage accumulates at the level of women and girls. In 1995, female literacy countrywide was just over half the rate for men (23 percent compared to 44 percent), and the discrepancy was still greater in rural areas.
Tostan, literally means "breaking out of the egg" in Wolof, the language spoken by the majority of Senegal's 7.9 million people and is among a number of innovative rural development and women's education initiatives that are addressing the problem at its source. It offers an 18-month learning program that combines basic education in national languages with practical development issues, and provides rural people with the resources to improve their standard of living while fostering increased confidence in their way of life.

The program lasts a total of five weeks and offers two intensive 300-level, 3 credit courses. Cultures of Senegal: Literature, Film, Music. Political History of South Africa This course introduces students to the violent history and major political struggles of South Africa from its origins to the establishment of black majority rule in 1995. Through a synthesis of history and literature, we trace the turbulent course of South African society from the first Dutch clashes with the Khoisan through the British imperial wars with Zulu, Xhosa and 'Boer,' the rise and fall of apartheid in the late 20th century, to the emergence of the Rainbow Nation in the 1990s. We also examine South Africa through recent literature, the works of South Africa's Nobel laureates, Nadine Gordimer and J M Coetzee among them. The course is complemented by several field trips.

Students earn 16 semester credits on a 15-week experience designed to encourage global awareness that enables people to live and act in an interdependent world. Groups of seven to 25 students are lead by one or two academic directors. Senegal plays a key role in West Africa's arts, culture, and politics, despite its small size and population. For the last three centuries, Senegal has inspired poets, novelists, and researchers, emerging as one of the most significant patrons of the arts in all of Africa. Led to independence by internationally acclaimed poet and philosopher Leopold Senghor, Senegal has throughout its history emphasized the role of arts and culture in society. Dakar, an exciting cosmopolitan city, juts into the ocean on the Cap Vert peninsula. From its shores you can see Gorye Island, once witness to the forced migration of enslaved Africans, today a relaxed, pedestrian-only community of artisans and craftspeople. Excursions to Petite Cote, a region known for its preservation of traditional and local cultures, and the city of Saint Louis, famed for its rich colonial heritage and architecture, add to your appreciation of Senegal's enormous contribution to African art and culture.
