Senegal is situated on the western bulge of Africa and has borders with Mauritania to the north and northeast, Mali to the east, Guinea and Guinea Bissau to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It surrounds Gambia on three sides.
The northern part of the Senegal coast is made up of dunes and to the south are muddy estuaries. Behind the coast is a sandy plain, which extends north to the floodplain of the Senegal River. The Casamance Region in the south, isolated from the rest of Senegal by the Gambia, is low but more varied in relief, while to the southeast lie the Futa Jallon foothills, which rise to a maximum altitude of just above 1,600 ft. Much of the northwest of Senegal is semi-desert, but the center and most of the south, except for the forest of Casamance, are open savannah country. The major rivers - the Senegal, Saloum, Gambia and Casamance - flow from east to west.

With its suave capital, Dakar - many travellers' favourite amongst the larger African cities - and its entourage of internationally known musicians, Senegal brings in more visitors than any other country in the region. Much of its lands are lush and vital, especially when compared to the deserts that surround it. Many of its visitors are package tourists soaking up the sunshine in upscale hotels, but the best of Senegal - a good wander through its streets and plains - is free. Dakar
Our students have the opportunity to visit those organizations and research centers as part of classroom activities. The office is also only five minutes away from our program doctor's clinic and not far from the Municipal Olympic swimming pool, which has exercise rooms and equipment. However, students see more of Dakar when they travel from most of our homestay families' homes, which are at a reasonable distance from the office. Our students are lucky to live so close to Youssou Ndour's well-known nightclub 'le Thiossane' and next to the African Cultural Center 'Blaise Senghor' where local groups perform. Dakar abounds with lively cultural activities and well-known musicians such as Baba Maal, Ismael lo, Coumba Gawlo, Thione Seck, etc.
Village des Arts
A state owned facility for visual art professionals. The artists have their workshop at the village and some of them have homes there. Students do both a visual arts and performing arts segment at Village des Arts. For the visual arts workshops, students choose peinture sous verre (glass painting), ceramics, bronze sculpture, or sand painting (sablage), and the performing arts workshop is on dance and drumming djembe. During our time spent at the Village des Arts students work closely with the artists, attend their exhibits, and visit their workshops in their free time. Some students have conducted their ISPs there.

Senegal's largest ethnic group, the Wolof, have co-existed mostly peacefully with the Fulani, Tukulor, Serer and Jola, although the Malinke in the southern Casamance province have maintained an on-and-off independence struggle that has yet to reach a clear resolution. With that exception, modern Senegal is a substantially stable, prosperous and democratic African nation, indeed such a model of African success that President George W. Bush chose to begin his historic 2003 visit to Africa here. He was received by President Abdoulaye Wade, one of the most outspoken, principled and iconoclastic Africa leaders on the scene today. Music in Senegal
Senegal hosts one of the most developed West African music industries. Senegal's top singer/bandleadersYoussou N'Dour, Baaba Maal, Ismael Lô, Cheikh Lô, and Thione Seckhave earned loyal international followings. Singer Omar Pene with his band Super Diamono is less known around the world, but in Senegal, he shares the exalted upper tier of the country's rich musical pantheon. Most of Senegal's superstars are men, but not all. Kine Lam and Coumba Gawlo Seck are two of the most prominent among many powerful and beloved female singers. Meanwhile, innovative new artists turn up in the cassette stalls of Dakar's crowded markets all the time. Alioune Kasse, Souleymane Faye, Madou Diabate are but a few of the many names you'll find there. Most of these artists perform in Senegal's pre-eminent music genre
